I'm saying that the character starts sleepwalking in GF, not Connery. His performance in GF is so good that it isn't as obvious...
It's not fair to say, "The issue isn't Connery...it's Bond." (Because Connery IS Bond)
Any criticism of the character of Bond ultimately comes back to Connery. So your thread contradicts itself.

Bond is much more than the actor playing him. The way the character is written counts for a lot. Bond hardly does anything in Goldfinger. That's hardly Connery's fault when he's written to be a prisoner for a large part of the film.

Thank you Matt.
Connery isn't Barbra Streisand - he doesn't write, direct and act )
How would everyone improve YOLT and make it a better film?
I'd only shuffle a few elements around to make the intrigue of the film better. We know too much too early, the only sustaining interest in the film is the knowledge of the impending finale.
I also feel that Bond has limited effect on the way the mission plays out, he gets placed into locations and situations. Be better if there was more connected espionage elements - like the excellent late night fight at Osato's office etc. Little Nellie, Ninja school, fishing village, sumo match - they're all just "insert here" elements.
How would everyone improve YOLT and make it a better film?
CGI in a better volcano eruption, and make Donald Pleasance look taller & bigger than Sean. Not so difficult.
Or just CGI in Anthony Dawson and use Eric Pohlmann's voice.
On a more serious note, I would give Osato a bigger and better role in the film, have him be more of a secondary villain to Blofeld, with him perhaps turning on the latter later on.

But then in 50 years time, technology would have advanced and the CGI would look as dated as the footage we got. When one has to resort to technology to make something happen/look convincing, then one isn't making a Bond film correctly.
Film: Tomorrow Never Dies | Girl: Teresa di Vicenzo | Villain: Max Zorin | Car: Aston Martin Volante | Novel: You Only Live Twice | Bond: Sir Sean Connery
But then in 50 years time, technology would have advanced and the CGI would look as dated as the footage we got.
I don't mind dated, I just mind bad. That eruption was BAD. So blow up a model volcano & insert THAT instead, I don't care, as long as it looks better than what we got. )
If you check out " our man flint" another over the top spy flick, you'll see it has the same
Standard of special effects. So I'm guessing what we got, was the best that could be done.

Yet just one year later Kubrick's 2001 came out, so not, not the best effects possible, LOL.
The special effects in 2001 are out of this world B-) MR seems to copy much of the aesthetic due to the model work which results in lots of white and brightness. As opposed to some other space flicks which are darker.

I think the special effects in Our Man Flint are much better. The scenes of the flood are really "special".
Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand.

And yet 2001 became in its own time state-of-the-art and in a class of its own, with several before its effects became standard in the industry. As things stands, YOLT's effects were good for its time and if it wasn't good enough, then perhaps all the space sequences should have been left off-screen. On what can be changed with YOLT? With everything given (and they really were, such as Jan Werich's illness), nothing. It is considerably acceptable as it is.

Lol, so it wasn't an illness as I remembered it...I blame the Mandela effect )
