Barbour Beacon reissue

Hello all,

It appears Barbour has reissued the Beacon (AKA Commander) jacket once more according to a few retailers such as Selfridges and End Clothing. As someone who owns a size large Beacon from last year, which is incidentally too large for me, I was wondering if anyone knew what the fit was like on the current version. Is it the same relatively slim fit as all previous iterations of it, or more generously sized as indicated on the End Clothing website? Here is the link, if you are curious:http://www.endclothing.com/us/barbour-beacon-sports-jacket-mwx0007ol71.html Notice that under the 'sizing' section, it is indicated that it is a loose fitting jacket.

Thank you

Based on the sizing guide from the website it appears they fit exactly as before; narrow in the shoulders and true to size.

What is the optimal weather for the Beacon jacket? Rain\wind\usual West Coast cold? Is it too warm to be worn in the summer\Southern California weather?
    Yes. Consssssiderably.

As with most waxed barbour jackets they are not padded so you have the outer shell and a cotton lining, so the coats by themselves are not warm, but do offer excellent protection from wind and rain, keeping warm depends on how you layer up.

The model is 6'+ with a 35" chest and he's wearing a small. It looks very tight in the shoulders on him.

I have a Barbour Beaufort and the fit is much different.

I don't think that Beacon is true to size. A small should fit comfortably on a 35" chest. That's a pretty small chest for a 6 foot guy.

    I live in central Florida. When it's no warmer than 60 F, I can wear the jacket with only a henly underneath, even then it's dependent on how sunny it is and I take it off when I get inside a store or house. When it's no warmer than 50 F, I can wear the jacket with the NPeal and the Henley, but I still take it off when I get inside, and if it's too sunny at 50 F, I can't do the NPeal underneath. If it stays in the 40's F or below, which rarely ever happens, I can wear the SA outfit rain or shine, but I still take it off inside a store or something. It's just that kind of jacket, for me at least. It's easy to sweat in this jacket when it's 50 F and above. Hope that helps -{

Not sure its a reissue, I got one on sale from End in February this year, After I placed the order End called to say they couldn't deliver the next day as they had no stock but they have contacts at Barbour so will make sure mu order is fulfilled, after that they seem to have them on and off all year.

I wear a medium on most things (including LVC leather) and this fits me well but the arm holes are tight.

I think this is another reissue, as it's not under the Dept B line anymore.

That's the problem with this jacket — and I say this as someone who owns both the original ToKiTo and a Beacon Commander. There is no perfect time to wear it. The jacket breathes horribly. After I bought my first one, I wore it on chilly nights and still found myself sweating uncomfortably. I bought the second in a smaller size to fit more as a blazer as intended. But I couldn't leave it on indoors. Is it warm? Very much so. I almost now tend to wear these as (New England) winter coats. For me, they don't work well spring and (early) fall. Glad to hear others' experiences.

I have the exact same experience with the ToKiTo version.

Just checked mind and it's not got the Dept.B label, normal Barbour style one like the End website, pretty sure Barbour online have had them all year

With the original I wore it during a very cold winter and sweated buckets. As mentioned above it really doesnt breathe

i own the original to kito (bought from selfridges many years ago). Agree that the jacket has no breathability and makes one feel sweaty - does anyone have any solution for this?
  • kaddkadd Posts: 917MI6 Agent
It was mentioned by a member a long time ago that this jacket actually has a plastic membrane in the lining preventing it from breathing. I have the same issue so only use the jacket when I'm not going to be walking much otherwise I sweat buckets.

So unless you experiment with removing the membrane, don't think there's an easy solution...

The first run Tokito's had no internal membrane, the later ones had a Goretex lining. The first run DeptB versions had a plastic membrane liner with soft cotton sleeve liners, after about a year they replaced the soft cotton sleeves with a polyester type material is awful and retains all moisture on the inside of the arm. The Beacons still have these.

I can vouch for that, I have a later DeptB and it's sweltering on anything but a freezing cold day and those sleeve liners :(

Did the lack of lining in the first run of To Ki To's cause the wax to seep through to the inside on warmer or at least sunny days? I've thought of having my tailor remove the plastic lining but haven't due to this concern.

Yes it did. But it soon dried out after use.

I bought mine at Hurleys, but I believe they are now out of stock (size Medium). I'm 5-8" with a 40" chest and it fits snugly. It is tight across the back when I fold my arms in front of me, with a medium weight sweater.

What I've never understood about this jacket is why the breathability issue is so extreme. I own other Barbour jackets and while they're not GoreTex, they don't leave puddles around my ankles.

I own a Lutz (similar design to the beacon) and have experienced no issues regarding breathability.

Not having the breathable membrane such as Gortex, most items will tend to trap moisture. The waxing applied to coats does make them quite water resistant. However, if you want the perfect combination of both then you probably want to consider some technical clothing, such as Arcteryx (their fit is more tailored) or North Face.

My Barbour does not seem too warm, but then again, I have not been running flat-out through a cold, damp bog. Or is moor the more accurate term? :)

The Barbour outlet store in Kittery, Maine has two XS Commander jackets. Tag says $729 (!!) but at 70% off. If they'd had a small I might have grabbed one.

Does a large equate to a 42 or 44 suit size? I could be interested.

I'm 6'0 and wears a Medium / 40 chest. My medium fits great. Like many had said the shoulder IS narrow, but not uncomfortable. It just feels like such a substantial piece of clothing I don't recommend sizing up despite the narrow shoulders, lest you will have that "bell" shape as the jacket tends to flair out abit. The main issue I can see for bigger guys are the high armholes. They can really get up into your armpits if you are wearing a thicker layer underneath.

Glad to hear that mine's not the only one that makes me sweat! I have heard about this issue before I nabbed mine, and it is definitely true. Here in mild Sydney I would probably have a window of 4-6 weeks to enjoy this jacket comfortably. I don't care though as it looks so damn cool....except for the fact that you will feel an uncontrollable urge to break out into a high leg-lift sprint at every opportunity :))

Had a small, modified, and recently picked up a medium. I should get the latter in a couple of days.

I ended up getting rid of my small collection of Barbour jackets a while ago which I regret! I had the Lutz and the Gladwell, but I always wanted the Beacon Sport.

Has anyone got both the Beacon Sport and the Lutz to give me a true use comparison? I love the Beacon Sport however it is nearly double the price of a Lutz! I'm also a big chap, so slim fit isn't my thing unless I order a size up.

I don’t have the Lutz but I do have a number of Barbour jackets. I find the ToKiTo collabs much more fitted than the Heritage, Greatcoats, or SL lines.
