The hp did indeed have a proper safety, meaning you could have the pistol made ready and still be relatively safe. Of course all guns that are properly maintained are safe, it's the person holding them who are sometimes not.

In over forty years of owning and handling firearms, both in the military, as a Sheriff's Deputy, and instructor, I've never had a close call such as you are describing.
Scary stuff. I'm glad I went home every night with the same amount of holes I showed up with.

When your job description is training a conscript army, you'll get the full cross section of the society. Some genuinely scary people there handling explosives, armament of various descriptions as well as heavy machinery and power tools...
