Did it make you mad when they referenced 9/11 in CR, or "the world's changed, if we only dealt with the good guys we wouldn't have anyone to deal with" in QoS, or the Cold War in Moore's films...?

I‘m genuinely curious about how they couldn’t keep Trump out of it. Previous Bonds never mentioned a Clinton, a Bush or an Obama.

Please don’t try to include any political messaging... :s

No, because they referred to events and never to specific people. Besides that, nobody denies 9/11 being a catastrophe whereas Trump has a fanbase for example.

I think you are all reading too much into that. My guess is Trump is not explicitly referenced, much less name-checked. I think it’s more of a “this is the world we live in” type thing. They won’t want to offend anyone (which is getting harder since everyone across the political spectrum is so easily offended).

Anyway, I thought there were more interesting things about the article than that...such as the admission that they were filming without a script! I also didn’t sense a ton of optimism about the film. “It works” isn’t exactly a glowing endorsement from the lead. They are held hostage by their assumption that classic Bond won’t resonate with anyone and doesn’t work anymore. One good thing that could come from this film flopping would be perhaps a re-evaluation of that flawed notion.

You’re both right, and that‘s what I hope aswell. No direct reference with an „opinion“ attached. That‘s a territory Bond shouldn’t enter.

For context, since folks increasingly tend to react online without reading
“We struggled to keep Trump out of this film,” Craig told me of No Time To Die. “But of course it is there. It’s always there, whether it’s Trump or whether it’s Brexit or whether it’s Russian influence on elections or whatever.” Like many Britons who have left home – Craig and Weisz are based in New York – he is baffled by the country’s seemingly inward turn since 2016. “There are British people working in the top industries in the world and at the top of those industries. We do that and we are good at that. And somehow we’re kind of breaking all that apart,” he told me. “Whether that’s breaking from Europe... There is a sort of nihilism, isn’t there?”

Please don't interprete this as fishing for a political debate, but I think he was talking about a more isloationist and devided USA, not Trump as such.

Craig did an excellent job on SNL. He hasn’t had enough comedy in his Bond films. He’s fantastic at doing the more absurd roles, and I find him more relatable in these. But I must be crazy.? :s

I watched SNL last night…thought the whole program was terrible…is that what passes for comedy today?

Craig did his best but the writing is lame :#

Sadly, yes. SNL in particular hasn’t been funny in years. But more generally, I think woke culture has all but killed the art of comedy.

I'd like to remind everyone of the new poll about who we want as the next James Bond. I've removed the names of eight actors who's aged out. I've also added about a dozen new names. We won't get a new Bond movie in seven months, so why not find out what we want beyond that?

I think that's spot on. The climate and the culture are what they are and Craig is saying the film reflects that.

Watching Spectre recently, the film seemed to argue for more of an isolationist political perspective, with C's seven eyes being held as undemocratic. The film is almost a proto Brexit movie.

Isolationism=/=democracy. There's ways of conducting international relations/diplomacy that are democratic and ways that are not.

@ Sir Miles: I watched a few on the SNL skits on You Tube yesterday. I agree that Craig did the best he could, but the writing was just not that great.

I am sure that I am going to enjoy seeing him in No Time To Die, despite the extended wait. From what I have seen in the trailers and tv spots, it looks like he was enjoying himself.

Those examples have nothing to do with going on about a named politician, shoving political messages down your throat (of course NTTD might not even do this, but my response was more to do with IF they did this, which is the impression I got).

9/11 and the Cold War and the Quantum line are all about events/the world in general. I don't even follow politics yet I'm sick of constantly hearing about Donald Trump. It's a bond movie, not a political debate.

The only politician I remember them parodying was Margaret Thatcher (which was an extremely silly moment btw). However, even that was just a silly/light-hearted parody about the person herself, rather than the actual politics.

There's absolutely no need for them to reference Donald Trump. Just make a damn bond film, it's taken them long enough.

I agree. The Movies got through the cold war promoting nothing more political than the idea of detente. I think we can all agree the Bond movies can make it through four years of Trump without involving themselves in that issue.

Regarding SNL....not nearly what it once was but Craig was good. I think Craig, who still enjoys doing live theater finds SNL appealing because it's one of the few shows still broadcast live.

The Girl You Wish You Hadn't Started a Conversation with at a Party, in particular, is very intricately scripted, all malaplopisms and bad logic , and Cecily Strong delivers that at a rapid pace without ever stumbling and stays in character.
But Strong and Kate McKinnon are the only current cast members I really recognise, I don't know who the others are.

What about the movie quotes sketch? This forum has a thread called the James Bond Quote Conversation. Could you folks not relate to the premise of that sketch?

It wasn't a good sketch, but I could definitely relate to it. And Craig seemed to enjoy doing it. I think Craig's enthusiasm on the show made it really good overall. I find that enthusiasm lacking with Bond.

He sure got enthusiastic when he was winning at craps!
I hope that's a bonus feature on the Bond25 dvd, when/if it ever comes out.

Kenan Thompson now holds the distinction of being the only non-Bond actor to appear in a gun barrel sequence. That’s pretty cool!

There have indeed been a lot of Simpsons Bond references over the years.
