Instead of being focused on a four month delay from the original premiere date, I think we should be thrilled with the choice of Fukunaga. His work on the first season of “True Detective” was absolutely brilliant.

And “Beasts of No Nation” is a criminally underrated movie. Elba deserved the Oscar for his role in it.

Fukunaga can do action, suspense, comedy, and character. He’s a great choice IMO.

4 months delay ain’t too bad. Had a bad feeling it might of been a year!

Very odd as True Detective has just been rewatched in my household this very last weekend (season 1 is superb) and VERY dark so could be interesting.

Fukunaga was completely under the radar - I haven't seen his name mentioned before in connection with Bond. He's certainly an interesting choice. He has directed a few movies that were a hit with movie critics (Sin Nombre, Jane Eyre, Beasts of no nation) and three well- recieved TV-series. I have only seen True Detective season 1 - it was exelent. A stylish and inteligent detective story. His background in TV may be a plus because he can work fast. Many TV directors are used to taking orders from showrunners, but it looks like Fukunaga has written, directed and produced most of what he's been involved in. It's interesting that he's a writer/director. He hasn't writting everything he's directed, but he's an experienced writer. He has won one Emmy for directing True Detective and there's a LONG list of nominations and wins in diferent smaller awards and movie festivals. IMDB lists two trade marks for Fukunaga:
    - Films often feature a child dying or loss of innocence
    - Long Tracking Shots

And here are some relevant quotes: "Collaborations aren't easy, but you definitely get something highly different than had you done it on your own. That's part of the experience."

"Some directors don't get involved in the cinematography and are just about story, but I'm definitely more tactile than that in terms of my involvement in the minutiae."

"In TV, you have no time and sort of just carpet bomb the scene with as many angles as possible as quickly as possible and find it in the edit."

"I don't storyboard, and I don't really shot list. I let the shots be determined by how the actors and I figure out the blocking in a scene, and then from there, we cover it."

"To do action without cuts is infinitely more exciting." If you didn't like QoS you will love Bond25 :D

"I think any character has to be well-rounded, whether they are male or female - they have to be complex and make choices that maybe we don't agree with, you know? I guess that's what makes them human."

I'm not very alarmed by the release date. After Craig signed on to Knives Out it was pretty clear Bond25 would get delayed, February was pretty much the best we coud realistically hope for. There is no reason to replace Craig because of this. I think finding and hiring a new actor will take more time than 2-3 months, the duration of this delay.

I don't think this mess and the delays means Bond25 will flop. Acopalypse Now, Ben Hur, The Bourne Identity (release date pushed from September 2001 to June 2002), Jaws, Titanic and Back to the future all had troubled productions. A difficult and troubled production is obviously not a good thing, but it's not a guarantee for a flop.

    Exactly.
The pessmism around the bond community can be depressing. it is as if some people want Bond 25 to fail

I’d forgotten he did Jane Eyre, too. So add romance to the list of what he can do.

I find myself much more excited about a Fukunaga directed Bond than a Boyle directed Bond.

I do not know enough about this director to be either excited or dejected frankly. I’ve seen True detective but my recollection is more about needing subtitles to understand Matthew Mcconnaughey than the direction.

I was stoked for Danny Boyle being a big fan of his movies but what’s done is done... February release date- anyone know what it might be up against?

It’s a 3-4 month gap, not a year. And any comparison to Marvel is utterly daft. And even if it was a valid comparison, would you really want Disney in charge? I would most certainly not.

I was never really excited when Boyle was announced as the director but now I'm really excited because I absolutely loved Fukanga's work on season one of True Detective. It's perfect timing as well because I planned on binge watching his new series Maniac this weekend!

I propose a test - if your girlfriend lets you see Bond on Valentines Day, marry her. If she doesn’t, dump her ass and see Bond {[]

I prefer British or at least Commonwealth directors for Bond, but time is short and we can't be picky. Fukunaga has done Jane Eyre and he's a Shakespear fan, so he probably has a good ear for British English.

    Very dark, very TITS.

I really enjoyed the first season - the second one felt really flat for me, but the first one was a masterpiece. One of a few series I actually binge-watched.

Here's an interesting article on Fukunaga from NY Times:

    https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/11/magazine/true-detective-director-cary-fukunaga-netflix-maniac.html?smid=tw-nytmag&smtyp=cur

He seems like n interesting person. He has lived in a number of countries and speaks several Languages. He also hasa lot of intersting hobbies (Polo, shooting guns and bow&Arrow etc.).

I just finished reading that article. Highly recommended. He sounds like the man for the job.

Everybody should check out his latest show Maniac this weekend! It looks like there might be some spy related scenes and Sally Fields is wearing TF sunglasses, it seems like the hints were there all along :))

Maniac is actually a remake of a Norwegian series from 2016 that I never saw.

I guess we can also rule out a 60th anniversary film in 2022...

Strictly speaking, Bond25 hasn't got to production yet, only pre-production. I think with someone of Fukunaga's abilities, writer, director, with high-end production TV experience, the problems should end.

I thought Beasts of no nation was fantastic and enjoyed Jane Eyre and also thought True Detectives was very good. I'm surprised no one on this board has pointed out that Fukunaga is the first American Bond director. Steven Spielberg must be feeling very sick today.

We had 33-years of British directors, then the New Zealander Martin Campbell and then more Brits until the Kiwi Lee Tamahori in 2002 with DAD and only one other non-Brit director, a German, Marc Forster, for QoS.

I'd imagine that we're looking at new casting calls and more clarity on the villain in the next couple of months.

One has to wonder about the script. If Purvis & Wade have started working on their treatment just a week ago, as this guy has come on board, maybe he'll just take their treatment and write his own script?

BTW Fukunaga wrote the script for the Stephen King 2017 'It' movie. I can't imagine Bond25 is going to be light hearted.

Filming start date, 4 March, is a Monday. I wonder if we're looking at a press conference that day, like Spectre?

I think it's interesting that the first season of True Detective (directed by Fukunaga) was so very good while the second season saw a sharp drop in quality. The same showrunner (writer/creator) was behind both Seasons, but the second season didn't have Fukunaga.

Here is a very tense and complex six minute unedited tracking shot from season one:

That's right, it's not another year. 3-4 months isn't a long delay. It's not going to be a five-year gap between SP and Bond 25, even though that's what the calendar years will say.

The delay is a shame, a Bond film missing a traditional release date, but it's only 4 months, and Fukunaga being named as director is a huge positive for a film that's been surrounded by negatives for such a long time, bring it on I say, just a shame I was in my thirties when I last saw Bond and in my forties now.

    It's only a 3 month delay on the initial international release. Cool your jets on the Craig should have been replaced talk. Considering what's happened it's only a short extra wait. Here's hoping this bloke does a bang up job -{

Of the previous 24 films, I don't think November has been the norm, I seem to remember Christmas and summer release dates.

I guess we'll get the first teaser trailer in June next year, as they have usually come out in March for DC's November released films.

The choice of Fukunaga was totally unexpected but absolutely inspired. The first season of True Detective is one of the greatest shows ever. Fukunaga is a master of suspense and atmosphere. If there was ever the perfect director to do a Garden of Death scene it would be Fukunaga. Fukunaga is also an exceptional writer, so he should be more than up to the task of punching up the script. The three month delay is unfortunate but necessary. This may all turn out for the best.

October/November has been the norm since The World Is Not Enough. Tomorrow Never Dies was the last time Bond had a Decemeber release, and before that it was The Man with the Golden Gun.

Pretty happy with this choice too. The delay of a few months was inevitable after Boyle's departure. I've only ever seen Bond in the cinema in the October/November/December timeframe, it is almost like a pre-Christmas gift, so February will be unusual. It is a minor quibble though. Better than November 2020.

With Boyle gone, I hope Barbara doesn't continue with the idea of killing Bond. It reeks of being a gimmick rather than actually serving the character and the franchise.

The fall/winter time is my favorite time of year so it was always the perfect time to watch a new Bond film for me. It will be weird seeing B25 at the start of the year instead of near the end.

Was there any real credibility to that idea or was it just tab and net fodder? It just seems very out of character for EON IMO.
