I didn't understand Q's line in The Spy Who Loved Me.

Basically in Q's gadget lab, they test out a gadget, that decapitates a statue and Q says to his workers "I want that ready for Ahmed's tea party".

I have no idea what this line means and I googled it, and couldn't find any information on what he was talking about. I also asked my friends but no one has any idea what he was talking about. What was he referring to when he said that, does anyone know?

It's a throwaway line, with no deep meaning.

Or ....... was it an insightful warning of the rise of ISIS ?

Just a joke, we already learned that Q's humor isn't appreciated by everyone

It's the same in Moonraker, when the explosive bolas is being tested in Brazil. After the dummy's head explodes, he turns to his assistant and says "I want that ready for army day."

    It's a throwaway line.

It's a reference to a very hidden sub plot, woven throughout all of Desmond's Bond films. See, Ahmed is the name of one of Q's assistants, first appearing in Goldfinger in his lab. It's never directly addressed, but there's hints of an evil scheme by Ahmed to frame Major Boothroyd for sabotaging gadgets to kill agents. However, the twist is Ahmed is the one behind the gadget sabotaging, but nobody believes Boothroyd's claims. As a result, he decides to take matters into his own hands by The Spy Who Loved Me, and decides to kill Ahmed at his own tea party. This is the last reference to the often overlooked sub plot, so we have to presume Q's scheme worked by the time Moknraker takes place.

It's eery that this has less plot holes than Skyfall.

Yes, it's a throwaway line, but using a name like Ahmed, maybe it’s alluding to the geopolitics of that era, namely the OPEC oil crisis.

I’m not sure it’s that clever - the scene is set in Egypt if I recall, and Ahmed would have been viewed as a fairly common name.

The mention of Tea party is an obvious prediction of the right wing in America. ;)

That's how I see it. Q's mobile labs demonstrate things relative to the location, so naturally an Arab name makes sense.

Oh okay I thought Q was probably joking. But I just didn't get the joke.

I'm drawing a blank, was that the first appearance of Q having a full workshop out in the field? I know we saw it again in MR and OP, but I can't think of any films prior that had it.

Thunderball is the first, but he doesn't have gag gadgets in that one.

Doh, had a senior moment there, I totally overlooked the setting!

so, when we see Q in his field-lab, is he carting all his works-in-progress round the globe with him on the off-chance 007 will pop in to tie up plot-threads mid-mission?
or does he supervise a worldwide network of labs, each specific to the local region, occasionally visiting in person but otherwise entrusted to some local lieutenant Q?
