the Problem with Moonraker is that...
there isn't a problem with Moonraker!
Its well-made, has a fantastic score, theme song, performance by roger moore, excellent set pieces and villainious perfomance by Michael Lonsdale.

All those and despite fleeting moments of over comedy, still has some pretty dark scenes, Jaws in the clown suit coming down the alley in rio and corrine being hunted down and mauled to death by dogs are possibly among the series more unnerving scenes especially with the score used for that dog chase scene. OK so the pigeon, Jaws trying to fly, dolly etc are unnecessary perhaps but they don't detract from the film for me in much the same way the drunk on the beach looking at his bottle when the lotus comes out of the sea in tswlm doesn't, in fact the look on bonds face when he drops the fish out of the car is pure class.

Your not alone, I guess that applies to me to as I don't agree with the op either.

You didn't do anything heartbroken_mr_drax and neither did anyone else. My comment was a stupid, derogatory and unnecessary one. It's one I regret posting and was completely out of line.

I sincerely apologise to anyone I may have offended and I will be more considerate in the future.

    There should be more slapstick.

That whole Drax space station set-up is crying out for a song and dance number, and the exchange about there being no seasons in space really does beg for a rendition of Springtime for Drax. I mean, they've got all those extras in, and all they do is float around. Of course, we could be looking at a Busby Berkeley number in zero gravity. All wasted, such opportunities never come their way again.

This is part of my point! There are some creepy moments in MR. JAWS at the Mardi Gras and Corrine being killed by the dogs, as well as the overall creepiness of Drax's plot to kill the world and repopulate it with his super race. And the general spooky vibe of Drax himself. If they hadn't of made everything so much about the humour it could have been an unsettling and intense adventure.

Well these days movie studios are masters at creating films that has something fe everyone, for example lego Batman, my 3 year old loves it as does my 10 and 12 year old daughters and I thought it was hilarious, MR may have worked as an unsettling and intense adventure but that would only have appealed to certain fans and would no doubt back then have garnered a stricter age certificate, as it stands it has aspects for pretty much everyone to enjoy. When I first saw it laser guns and space were common place in entertainment so my generation probably never found the plot outlandish if we viewed it as kids.

As I said, MR was never meant, nor did it even have the potential to lean toward the serious. It was meant to be a romp from beginning to end. Even if the outlandish elements were removed or modified, what would be left is a travelogue with abruptly changing locales and just as abrupt character interaction and development...all meant to support a framework of light fantasy escapism. Put altogether, including the fantastical plot and the slapstick, unquestionably, categorically and most decisively, it all worked.

personally I like the glass factory fight ... maybe not so creepy as those other aspects but I think its one of the best fight scenes of all the Moore films, very high concept and very dangerous looking (though I don't think Roger got a single scratch, he never does)

What's your point Higgins? That because this film wasn't made with a future audience in mind that it is beyond criticism?

Plus, the only people that would get anything out of it now besides children are the diehards. You can like a film and still call out its faults. It's not like the film was perfect for 1979 standards and has suddenly become flawed with changing cinema trends. Just look at the reviews of the film when it came out as proof that it has always been viewed as flawed by many

I think the problem with most people is the plot. A French billionaire creating a master race in a space station and using poison globes to kill people who he deemed inferior. I liked the plot, because it was based on what happened in WW2. Hitler wanted the perfect race, so he gassed people who he thought was inferior. The space station is a Bond take on that.

I don't have a problem with the film, as Bond films are meant to be a form of escapism. The humour is a part of Roger's Bond as well
