The Weapons of Goldeneye

Back in 1995 after the passing of Cubby Broccoli & the passing over of Misty Eyed Dalton, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G.Wilson had to reboot the Bond franchise much as they would later very successfully do with Daniel Craig in 2006's Casino Royale. For this 1995 reboot they turned to Irish actor and fake Brit Pierce Brosnan who was no longer handcuffed to Mary Tyler Moore's Remington Steel which had cost Brosnan the Bond role back in 1987 ...Coontz!

Goldeneye had some great elements including a drifting Russian T55 tank, a death defying bungee jump off a dam (why didn't he just take the stairs?) an unbelievable mountain pass road race where a classic vintage Aston Martin DB5 kept up with a modern Ferrari 355, Omega product placement, Judi Dench as Olivia Mansfield to the teaming up of 007 with Sean Bean's 006 who would later turn out not to be dead as first believed but also be Bond's nemesis Janus. Like all true Bond villains Janus had a hench-person and what a hench-person she was, the magnificent Xenia Sergeyevna Ontatopp portrayed over the top by the magnificent Famke Janssen, a character clearly inspired by the barking mad Fatima Blush portrayed equally magnificently by Barbara Carrera in the unofficial 1983 offering Never Say Whatever Never Ever Again ....a complete rehash pile of dog pooh inspired loosely by 1965's classic Thunderball. Still if did briefly reunite Connery with the Bond franchise as well as Valerie Leon ...Boing!

It has taken this nut job quite a few years to achieve this but I have finally tracked down and secured for posterity all the major players from Goldeneye's screen used firepower kicking off with Brosnan's two practical suppressed PPK pistols to Bean's & Brosnan's practical suppressed Browning BDM to Janssen's suppressed practical Astra Cub through to Janssen's and Brosnan's practical Kalashnikov AKS-74U. A DSPH piton gun would have been nice but there were only ever two examples created for the production by Nick Finlayson and they are safely under lock and key in the official Archive -{

    Wow!

    Once again thank you for sharing some of the wonderful and rare items that you have in your collection Mr Donk. I follow your 'Modest Collection' post with much interest and once again you've not disappointed with this post.

    Must say that I've learnt something new reading this post as I thought that both Brosnan and Bean used Walther PPK's on the Pre-Credits scenes of Goldeneye.

    Once again thanks for sharing.

    A very good question CC. When I started on this quest even with my connections original Bond weapons were not accessible up until 2002 in fact when Brosnan stepped down & we had a change of handlers who support the production. In 2006 the previous handlers decided to sell off their inventory at auction which I was part of & this was the first real opportunity in the UK at least to secure such properties. I made the decision to try and secure properties which had been used by the character James Bond which included the character's stunt doubles. Later with research it was possible to track down the major villains weapons (sorry Ourumov) which in turn lead to some of the female character's weapons. The intention was never to source & secure every weapon from every Bond movie (or write about it!). It's a bit like I enjoy collecting Corgi Bond cars of my childhood period, the 1960's to 1970's but I have no interest in the later models which were made in China or I enjoy collecting the movie posters of the 60's & 70's but have no interest in the later posters which did not utilise "Bondmania" period artwork if that makes any sense? -{

    Very nice finds, I had wondered for many years what type of pistol Xenia uses to gun down the helicopter pilots and now I know. I cannot help but wonder if Xenia's Astra pistol was the same one used in OP. I remember reading in 007 Magazine's Most Famous Gun In The World issue, that many times Bapty reused many of the prop guns from film to film in the hands of different characters.

    The AKS74-U looks amazing, I bet it looks even better in person than it does in the pictures. Always nice to see a screen used Walther PPK especially with the suppressor fitted to it.
