TF optical glasses quality

Hello everyone and Merry Christmas!

Two days ago I bought my first pair of optical frames as my sight became worse over the years because of all that graphic design and I got a pretty good deal in a shop known for selling ultra premium glasses in Poland (TF, Porsche Design, Dior etc) - it was a 50% off until Christmas and I got a TF frame for around 150$.

Thing is - compared to my Persol sunglasses the plastic bends really, really easily (the Persol's seem almost bulletproof at this point). So I even had doubts whether these are genuine or not but I guess that's not the point since I bought it in a well known retailer (they have saloons all over the country).

They didn't give me the authenticity card and booklet (so that's confusing) but I may ask them still to add them. I also don't have a matching serial number as on the box on the temple but I guess that's something only sunglasses have? Anyway - does anyone have Tom Ford optical frames and would care to elaborate about the quality?

Best,
George

I think you will have to be a little more patient...it’s Christmas and not everyone has time to visit and even fewer will have TF eyewear...

True that, still forgetting sometimes that I'm one of the few who spends a lot of time behind the computer desk every single day -{ But the second reason might be even more solid.

Then you have to take into account time zones etcetera, etcetera. Many variables.

Anyway, I'd be interested in this as TF has some rather interesting frames and when it's time, I may consider getting ones, if the quality is good.

Don’t have options al frames but do own multiple pairs of sunglasses and have to say find the quality variable across them. TF 108’s, Snowdons all fine and robust but 144 Marko’s very poor if not flimsy.

    I hope this helps

I'm the same, I don't have any optical TF frames only the Bond ones and its hit or miss with their quality. The Henry's and Marko's both feel sturdy and solid but the Snowdons feel flimsy and cheap.

I looked at the Tom Ford acetate frames at my optician a couple years ago, so I only have first impressions to go on. None in stock fit my face so I didn't really take note of models. Quality of the acetate was fine, but didn't really justify full retail, even with my insurance co-payments. Maybe I am not a fan of Marcolin. 50% off seems about right. However, even thin acetate frames should not bend easily if at all without heating. That is worrying.

I found Persol and Oliver Peoples (both Luxottica) superior, although independents like Lunor and Mykita beat them all. I managed to snag a pair of Lunor frames at half-price and am very happy with them.

What's worrying even more is that if you check the Tom Ford website, there are frames which retail for 940$. If the quality is similar it's well... Very overpriced for a bending plastic. The model I have looks absolutely killer but if anyone sits on them they are gone.

$940 is a rip-off even for best quality plastic. But you are not paying for the plastic, not even so much the quality, you are paying for the brand name.

I wear contacts throughout the day so glasses don't get a lot of wear. Last couple I've had were Tag Heuer ceramic titanium with flexible arms. They cost a bomb but are brilliant.

Sounds like something Porsche Design would make - there is no comparison between plastic and titanium but damn, I guess the Tag Heuer's are not that much more expensive than a regular TF frame!

Another question but more general this time: is it normal in hand made sunglasses that they are not symmetrical? i noticed just now that the bridge in my TF eyeglasses is very skewed and even the lenses are at different angles, which begs the question about the quality of the glasses but maybe that's just how they are made?

Tacking on a couple of sunglass questions here:

Are the Markos fairly narrow fitting? One of the things I really like about the Snowdens is that they came in a narrow fitting, which is ideal for me (my face may resemble an Easter Island statue, heheh).

Secondly, what about the QoS and Skyfall aviators from Magnoli? Are they to scale of the originals? Would that mean they both fit narrow?

    Thanks!!

I can't speak to how the Magnoli compare to the original TF108s, but they fit me well. My face is narrow and I can't wear optical glasses with a width over 48mm. When I had prescription lenses put in the tech commented on how nice the frames were. So definitely worth the price.
