James Bond's proposed cover name

Hello, I've just joined this forum. So forgive me if the content of this post has been covered in another thread in this forum.

I came across the following article in The Independent about how Fleming originally was going to give Bond a permanent cover name he could use on missions:

https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/books/news/the-names-secretan-james-secretan-early-draft-of-casino-royale-reveals-what-ian-fleming-wanted-to-8572375.html

If I’ve understood it correctly, this cover name was to be an ongoing one—though it’s not too clear if it would be used for every mission he was on. He did use several aliases in the books and films, but they were specific and relevant to each mission.

In the films, he seems not to have gone to great pains to fabricate convincing aliases. The nearest he got to doing so was in the film of OHMSS—which is faithful to the book. Though, there might be others, I can’t remember.

There are some who even say that “James Bond” is a code name that each person who inherits the 007 moniker assumes. Though this theory falls down due to the consistency of Bond’s personal history as chronicled in the novels, I like the idea of it.

I think the most used cover name was Robert Stirling, most notably used in tswlm, last used by Craig's Bond in Qos. The Bond is cover name is utter madness, Bond has a history, a family coat of arms, his father was Andrew Bond and his mother Monique Delacroix-Bond, not to mention u
Aunt and Uncle Charmaine and Max Bond. You can go on and on even the fact he has a rank of Commander undermines this non theory.
It was either that.....or the priesthood

I'll leave this open for discussion. Thanks to TP for providing the link above.

I'm not convinced re the spelling of "Miss Pettavel" in the article!

Not that it's the most reliable source, but here's Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miss_Moneypenny where it's "Pettaval". Mais n'enculons pas des mouches, to quote Our Founder! (CR, Chapter 7)

Thanks, but my post isn’t really about that theory. I just mentioned it in passing, saying I don’t subscribe to it.

Yes, I know and agree. I said as much in my post.
