Mission: Impossible Pressure on B25

Given how well Fallout was received critically, and after today's news that there will be Mission Impossible films in 2021 AND 2022, how much pressure is Bond 25 under now?
If it flops, given the reception to SPECTRE, is there a chance Bond will be left behind?

For the sake of balance, I do think the series will go on longer than Mission: Impossible, I think Tom Cruise IS that franchise and once he goes, that'll be that.

I totally agree with you. Mission impossible without Tom Cruise is no longer impossible mission unlike Bond who has managed to have several screws in the years.

We must also remember that Bond movies still sell more tickets than MI and SPECTRE isn't seen as a failure by the general audience as some members see it that way.

I was really surprised by Tom Cruise‘s announcement of having two M:I in two years. That‘ll be tough even for him, after all he‘ll be pushing 60 then...
The name is Walker by the way.

Doubt that it means much for o to Bond, unless they decide to go the back to back route with another final Craig film which is unlikely in my view.

It's very possible Tom Cruise is making two MI movies back-to-back because he's pushing 60.

I definitely think the back-to-back MI films is an indication that Cruise is planning one last hurrah for Ethan Hunt before bowing out of the franchise due to his age. Whether MI in any form continues without their major drawcard, who knows...it would be a very hard task. I just really want to see Jeremy Renner back in the films.

By the 8th film they can at least admit that these missions are, in fact, possible.

    :))

I would like to see Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) to be the lead character when Tom Cruise quits.

Mission Inpossible is not really a threat to Bond, and definitely not an existential threat. After all, the two film franchises have coexisted for over 20 years. That said, I really hope that EON, Craig, etc. do feel pressure based on the quality of the last 2 MI efforts. With Craig’s ego, one can imagine that he doesn’t not want Bond to be playing second fiddle to Hunt.

Since next year is likely Craig's final year as Bond before Bond goes dormant for awhile while looking for a new actor. I think it should be seen as a good thing that we'll still have action/adventure spy films on the big screen in some form as we wait to see where the Bond series is headed. Seems silly to me that some cant enjoy both MI and Bond films though. Obviously on a Bond forum we naturally are a bit bias and rightfully so. But there's still plenty to love about the MI films and I'm really excited to see what they do next especially after Fallout.

Enjoyed Fallout a lot. However I expect once Cruise hangs up his hat the franchise will be dead

Spectre got an audience score of 61% on Rotten Tomatoes (compared to 86% for Skyfall), which was worse than the critic's score.

It simply wasn't a very good movie (not exactly bad, but not very good either). It benefitted from the popularity of Skyfall.

MI: Fallout was an excellent action movie while SPECTRE was only better than mediocre, in my opinion. Bond movies should respond to competing action franchises, but not try to copy them. Trying to be to much like other franchises often goes wrong, as seen in Moonraker (Strar Wars) and QoS (Bourne). Instead of making Bond25 back-to-back action and destroying poor Daniel's health, they should make it a tense thriller with about three standout action sequences. Use typical Bondian elements that you don't get in MI such as skiing, gambling, high living, womanizing, Bond in uniform and a raid. That'll work.

I agree with Number 24 also.
For Craig's last hurrah as Bond, rather than trying to out MI, MI, EON needs to go back to what made the Craig films (at least the two critically acclaimed ones, CR and SF) stand out which is a return to building on Craig's strengths: more cold blooded, action with at least a foot in reality (a visceral bone crunching fight scene or two), more spycraft, and a actual suspense. Fukugawa, on the first season of True Detective, was able to infuse most episodes with an atmosphere of suspense and a heavy undercurrent of dread....which would work very well for Craig and Bond 25.

Another thing that makes Bond stand out from Ethan Hunt is killing. Bond is an assassin while Hunt goes to great lengths to avoid killing. Making a point out of the fact that Bond is a cold hearted assassin is great for suspence and its something MI can never do.

Ethan Hunt will kill the bad guy. James Bond will kill the bad guy after sleeping with his wife.

The three major spy franchises of the last 25 years have all influenced each other, but basically occupy their own space. Bourne was a joyless, sexless, paranoia-laden take on the genre. MI is action and pacing turned up to 11, very driven by Cruise’s individual performances. Then there’s Bond. Craig’s films have been very different from Brosnan’s, but they still have more in common with each other than they do with either of the other two franchises. That’s because Fleming (and Terrance Young) created a different kind of hero. The people in charge just need to remember (1) what makes Bond special, and (2) what has made Craig’s (pre-Spectre) interpretation memorable.

No. Ethan Hunt will kill the bad guy after litterally jumping through hoops to avoid it.. Bond will get his orders to kill the bad guy, then sleep with his wife to find him and them kill the bad guy.

I never watch that Hubbard fanboys movies, I’ve never seen an MI movie at all, shocked that he’s even mentioned on here to be honest, I don’t think there’s any comparison, I see bond as it’s very OWN genre.

There’s no way you can accurately judge these, or any, films and compare them to another series by watching the odd clip.

I accept what you’re saying but I just can’t get past Tom cruise, I can’t separate the man from the on screen character he’s portraying, just one of those things I’m afraid.

Wagner was a complete prick but the Overture to Tanhauser is one of the most sublime pieces of music. I do get your point though. No fan of Cruise but the last MI film towered over Spectre.

If the people in charge of Bond films don't get off their collective butts the number of MI films will surpass the total number of Bond films....
