Especially the ending- you really have to pay close attention throughout for it all to make sense.

Interesting. It's often obvious how most spy movies will end.

"OK Connery" aka "Operation Kid Brother" is highly recommended. It stands the test of time like few of its peers, with some really standout performances and action sequences.

Really? That's great. There are some hidden gems that didn't do well at the box office and later were nearly forgotten. Rocketeer is one example.

I'd forgotten about that one- its a fine contribution to the cinematic oeuvre of spy films, with a marvellous central performance to boot. I'd really recommend "O.K. Connery" to anyone on this thread who hasn't seen it- they're missing out on an entertaining classic of the genre...

    I agree…I love it, it hits the right balance between action and storytelling…took me YEARS to finally get hold of a copy (on VHS, still looking for a DVD copy)…it also has a great ‘Bond’ cast -{

You should try and get hold of the deluxe edition- 2 discs, interviews with the cast, deleted scenes, commentary from Michael G. Wilson explaining what Cubby thought of the film, etc.

Not sure if I'll be able to continue viewing on a regular basis but I have all three Austin Powers movies, all the Harry Palmers and the Matt Helms. I don't have 'Operation Kid Brother' but I see it's on youtube, albeit in poor quality.

Is CR54 still in the frame?
Critics and material I don't need. I haven't changed my act in 53 years.

    I hope so.

I have all of those you mention, so would be happy with any of them.

I belive CR-54 is next on Friday.

Should we limit us to espionage and secret mission movies and spoofs of them, at least at first?

I am ashamed to say, that I don‘t own CR54 on a disk.
And my VHS is long retired and doesn‘t work anymore

One of several things that OK Connery/Operation Kid Brother has going for it is the stylish direction of the Italian genre-film culture of the 1960s. It would be hard to say that Alberto De Martino brings the sort of quality that Sergio Leone brought to the 60s spaghetti westerns, but I'd suggest that it is perhaps in the vein of something like the work of Sergio Corbucci - a little darker and grittier, but still with a bit of sense of humour to balance the violence. Considering how Corbucci has been a major influence for Tarantino's westerns, I wonder if QT would look on OK Connery as an influence if he were to attempt a spy film?

Don't forget the score- Morricone is a class act.

    Only a German wouldn't have CR-54 on DVD! :p

Bruno Nicolai is also a co-composer, and his work is not to be sniffed at - his excellent main theme from The Grand Duel is used prominently in Kill Bill Vol. 1, another Tarantino connection.

Higgins, there seem to be two possible choices for Friday's viewing. What do you think?
  • HigginsHiggins GermanyPosts: 16,619MI6 Agent
I‘d propose „how to catch a thief“ for Friday

If we're going to watch Hitchcock wouldn't "North by north west" or "Notorious" be more fitting for a Bond fan forum?

The picture quality's not as good as the dvd (meaning the bonus feature that comes with the "funny" version yall just watched), but it does include the ending which the dvd is missing.
The image during the closing credits anticipates the PAN paperback covers!

    I have a suggestion:
We post a list of all the movies suggested so far. When there is a series such as Mission Impossible or Johnny English only the series is listed, leaving the particular movie to determined later. Then we mark the films we'd like to see and have access to with an "I" to give ourselves a better idea of what'll work.
  • BarbelBarbel ScotlandPosts: 37,873Chief of Staff
My family are coming to stay for the next four weeks, so I may miss part of the films ("Grandpa is trying to watch a film" doesn't cut much ice with a sleepy kid on your knee needing a story).

Because of the overwhelming response to my suggestion for a "low-tec" poll for movies we may warch together, I'll start making a list now. Movie series are only listed by the name of the series and not individual movies. Later we can talk about individual movies in the series. Please help out :)

    Jason Bourne
    Johnny English
    Austin Powers

    From memory they are:

The Deadly Affair (based on Call for the Dead)
A Murder of Quality (not sure, but I think this might be a TV movie)
    The Looking Glass War
    The Little Drummer Girl
    The Russia House
    The Tailor of Panama
    The Constant Gardener
    A Most Wanted Man
    Our Kind of Traitor

    Have I missed any out?

Does anyone else have the Matt Helm films?
