Watching old videos on the flatscreen...

As part of a clear out I've been going through old videos - including those old letterbox Bond films, a new treat in their time - and scrapping a good few. I still have the old video player so I'm testing them out.

A lot have rubbish pictures with the passage of time so just get binned.

One advantage not lost on those devoted to our vinyl records thread is that the sound is analogue, so John Barry's soundtrack sounds great and arguably better. This is a flaw you get with the digital films - the picture may be great but as the soundtrack is such a vital part of the Bond experience, you lose out a bit as it is condensed - the sound is impressive but 'dead'.
Going thru the tapes, the ghosts of my past returned - chat and approving murmurs from my old school mates with whom I've not been in touch for decades! We used to watch the Bond vids a lot.

One snag arrives when I insert my old VHS tapes - the ones you bought from the shop and used to record off the telly. No matter what the picture is like, there is no sound. Why is this? Have I got the leads hooked up wrong to my video? I want to find out before binning them. These lovingly taped double bills of Dr No and Moonraker, or Live and Let Die followed by Goldfinger. You always had to worry should the tape run out before the finale.
Anyway, any ideas why the sound doesn't work on the stuff tapes off the telly, but does on the movies bought from the shops.
