Apparently Equity had taken issue with the casting of Vijay, since he wasn't an actor, and the casting of Sadruddin with an actor - essentially splitting Vijay's role between two characters - was meant to mitigate the issue.

A female friend of my sisters was in India and many tuc-tuc drivers were pestering her to get her to take a ride. She refused in the best school English, but they kept on bothering her. In the end she blurted out in desperation: "me no like tuc-tuc, no!" It worked!
