Such a great line and delivered with a great smile,
It’s about the writing coupled with the delivery, but Mr Wright is superb.
He and Craig create one of those “click” moments where both men know
they have met someone who is going to be a good friend. One of the few things
QoS follows up on well.
Agreed. Instant friendship/mutual respect.
Critics and material I don't need. I haven't changed my act in 53 years.
Two Asian figures in the background earlier, one glimpsed with a cane... possibly an allusion to the hoods who attempted an assassination of Bond at the card table in the book.

The Grandhotel Pupp in Karlovy Vary which was used as the Hotel Splendide in this film recently made an appearance in the John Le Carre novel Agent Running in the Field...a very tenuous, but interesting link between the world of Bond and JLC.
I have very little interest in poker, but damn these scenes are thrilling to watch!
I’m the same, it’s the suspense, tension and rivalry, all in an evocative setting that makes it work.
Add Arnold’s music.... simple straightforward and sharply memorable.
This is Thunderbird 2, how can I be of assistance?
Bond and Vesper alone in a restaurant... similar in look and tone to a scene in 'Once Upon A Time In America' between DeNiro and Elizabeth McGovern (as I dimly recall)

The first glimpse that I saw of the torture scene was a still in the book The Art of Bond by Laurent Bouzerau, that I glimpsed while flicking through that book in a Waterstones shop a couple of weeks before the film came out. I could scarcely believe that this scene was going to be translated to the screen in such a faithful manner.
The movie briefly dips into the torture-porn horror genre, as a way of bringing Fleming to the screen. Craig's humorous responses lighten the scene a little.

I wince - every single time. And I knew it was in the book!

Very subtle, if so.
Indeed.

Yes, such a great scene—very tense!

It's a myth that there's no humor in CR. It's sparingly used, smart and deadpan.
That chip isn't really worth anything in that situation … or at least that's what I've read.

Yes - and I don't like how Mathis's character is buffeted about in the ongoing confusion.
Indeed.
