  For what it's worth (which is probably nothing) I've spoken at length with my local watchmaker in Chicago about winders. He's of some renown in the midwest and he's anti-winders. That is unless the watch face is fully perpendicular to the ground - those exist but tend to be a lot more expensive. Otherwise, the angled winders apparently put more wear on the gears than you'd want and reduces the life of the service.

  The topic of winders is quite controversial in watch circles.
  
  Yes, a winder will cause more wear on the movement compared to a watch that is not worn daily and just rests on the table when not worn.
  However, if a watch winder is properly set up ( number of daily rotations) the wear and tear is not higher than with a watch that is worn daily without pause.
  
  I personally don‘t use winders on my watches with the exception of my Perpetual Calendar (sometimes). I am using a Swiss Kubik manufactured Rolex winder for that which will cost more than the mentioned 700$.
  
  Setting up a normal watch after it has stopped is no rocket science.
