Topic: Film generes that should come back/go away

Let's talk about film generes that are rare now that you would want more of in the coming years, but also generes you feel have outstayed their welcome.

I would like to see more westerns, spoof movies and dramas in cinemas. On the other hand I think we need a long break from superhero movies.

What do you think?

I too am tired of Super Hero movies ( Apart from Batman Obviously, always time for the Bat )  ajb007/wink
"Found footage " Horror films, I really hate them  ajb007/mad

In general I agree with you, but the found footage movie "Troll hunter" is great!  ajb007/biggrin

Come back:

Serious westerns, in the vein of say the Coen brothers' True Grit rather than parodies like A Million Ways to Die in the West.
Gangster films.
Grand historical epics, possibly in the sword and sandal genre.

Go out of fashion:

Superhero films, at least those made in the Marvel in-house 'style', which has gotten stale by this point.
Video game movies.

Super hero films out stayed their welcome with me ages ago! But my husband and oldest son can't get enough of them  ajb007/frown They're huge fans of the comics.

Men on a mission moviers like Where Eagles Dare and The Guns of Navarone. Or women on a mission for that matter. I wish Jackdaws by Ken Follelt was made as a movie. The story is much more about espionage than the two classics I mentioned, but I think it wouldhave worked.

I'd like to see some realistic spy films, where the spy has to use his/her cunning to get out of tricky situations not over the top action. A female spy film would be good but NOT like Atomic Blonde!

Re: Film generes that should come back/go away

I liked Atomic Blonde, but I agree we need more straight spy movies. The most sucuessful lately is probably tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

Re: Film generes that should come back/go away

Parts of Atomic Blonde were ok but the fight scenes with her against 2 or 3 men at least twice the size of her were ridiculous (imo).

Proper swashbucklers like errol flynn type films.
Non animated family films
Original handrawn animated movies like from the classic Disney era.
Spoof films in the vein of the carry on films, airplane, Mel Brooks etc

On the 'unfeasible ' spy-type front: has anyone seen "Anna" with Sasha Luss, Cillian Murphy, Luke Evans and Helen Mirren?

No, I haven't. Is it any good?

It's a Luc Besson film, and a lot of fun, quite similar to his previous film La Femme Nikita. He's good with the strong female leads such as Colombiana and The Fifth Element as well as LFN and this is cut from the same cloth - action and fighting scenes are terrific and the plot is interesting, the women get the best roles. Worth a look.  ajb007/martini

I enjoyed Unlocked, in the same current spy, espionage thriller vein. Give it a go if you haven't seen it.

"Any of the opposition around..?"

I really enjoyed Unlocked  ajb007/martini  then again I'm a fan of Spooks etc.

I'd love to see a few witty word play comedies returning, with plenty of
Fast interacting dialogue. Rather than just another gross out comedy

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy was on tv at the weekend. I recorded it and will watch it later. I've seen it before, ages ago but I don't really remember it.

I'd also like to see historical films like Selma, the story of Martin Luther King. David Oyelowo did a fantastic job portraying MLK.
