Re: Poll: Who would you like to be the next James Bond in Bond 26?

Poor old Henry...so maligned.

Went back to look at the poll that started this thread.

Hoult must have upped his 1% in the intervening 3.5 years, by the time the red carpet rolls he'll be 34ish and he's got the look that straddles novels and what DCphobes always claim the films need. Although, like Ellis, you kind of hope whoever was doing sound in post managed to trim the treble down a notch.

However, in reality I'd back any one of the candidates mentioned here to own the role....so after the sometimes interminable fallow periods of late the best candidate is clearly the one who signs a contract for 5 films in 10 years!  ajb007/biggrin

This machine hasn’t learned that no A-list movie star has ever been chosen for Bond before. And yes, starring as Superman in successful films has made Cavill an A-lister.

Re: Poll: Who would you like to be the next James Bond in Bond 26?

I'd like the Bond actor norm to be dark haired, white male like Sean, Timmy and Pierce. And every few Bond's they hire someone who slightly doesn't fit the mould a la Sir Roger Moore and Daniel Craig or a younger Idris etc.
So it's firmly Cavill for me. With Aidan Turner as runner up.

Not following on after Craig, but I've thought Dan Stevens would do a great job.

I don't know if Dan Stevens is a bit too pretty. I really like him as an actor and seen him in a few things but not sure Bond is him.

I'm still sticking with Aidan Turner as my number one choice, though Gerard Butler was my number one choice last time and it went to Daniel Craig.

Just getting to see this post. I would say I really have always been a fan of Idris Elba being the replacement for Craig. He's muscular, mean looking, and can stand his own as a secret agent. I was shocked to see over 500+ votes for Tom Hiddleston. He's so scrawny. No doubt he's a fantastic actor but I'm not sure I can see him as the world's best secret agent.

I think Idris Elba's age now sees him ruled out but he was a very strong candidate. Handsome, Tall, Presence, Tough, Sex Appeal.

My top three currently;
Aidan Turner
James Norton
Henry Cavill

Of the names mentioned commonly, I would not like;
Tom Hardy
Richard Madden
Henry Golding

I have had this half-baked idea for a movie in which Golding plays James Suzuki.

Re: Poll: Who would you like to be the next James Bond in Bond 26?

Henry Golding checks off a good number of the Bond boxes. I guess if the Bond of the novels had a Swiss mother, the next Bond could have an Asian mother (who certainly could have been a British Citizen). Golding did a nice turn as a psycho villain in "The Gentleman" but I worry if he is the type of actor who does not possess the ability to do "nuance". Let me explain: some very model handsome actors can do extreme (crazed psychos or broad parody) or they can do wooden, mannequin but they can't do in between.  I also have some serious reservations about Golding's screen presence or lack of charisma/animal magnetism that is needed for Bond and it has nothing to do with his being Asian (Bruce Lee, Chow Yun Fat, and many other Asian actors have great screen presence, charisma and animal magnetism). IMO, Golding may be lacking in that department and that's a no go for Bond.

I think any Cavill fans can forget about him, he's going to be Superman for some time to come.

Turner is going to be pushing 40 in 2023, I think that's just a bit too old to make a reasonable number of films with him. I think DC's run has been anomalous, and it should really be 3 years between films.

Looking back at past Bond actors they had been in movies before Bond, along with a lot of TV. While I've been a Norton supporter, strangely hasn't done any movies, only TV. He turns 35 this year. How old will he be when Bond26 comes out? He could have the same problem as Turner.

I think people should take notice of Tom Brittney. He was in Babs Broccoli's film 'Film stars don't die in Liverpool', he took over from Norton in the TV series Grantchester. He was in the TV series Outlander, which I understand was popular in the US. And he was in Tom Hanks' latest film Greyhound - it's a great way to sell him to the US public.

He's only 29 now, which would be in line with the age — it'll be 2023 at the absolute earliest for Bond26 and they'll want a guy for at least a decade.

Re: Poll: Who would you like to be the next James Bond in Bond 26?

The Hardy news is something I would leak ahead of release if I were about to do something brave, in the Sir Humphrey sense (hello British comedy of a certain vintage fans), with a franchise to save the actor involved the tsunami of excrement tiny minds would deluge the internet with.

I *think* that's the most spoiler-free way to float that notion.

I think Brittney is a compelling suggestion. I remember seeing him in Outlander and thinking he had enough charisma to hold his own in his scenes with Heughan. I haven't seen him in anything else and don't know what kind of range he has but the fact that he worked with Babs before is big.

If true- and it's a pretty big if, mind- this is good news. I would have personally preferred Cavill, but Hardy generally ticks the boxes for 007 pretty well. He's tall and dark, has proven acting chops, and can wear a suit well (see the 2015 film Legend.) The question now is; if Hardy is onboard as Bond, does this make it more likely that Christopher Nolan might direct B26?...

Maybe I've not seen his best work, but he always seems to lack personality, and comes across as a brooding mumbler. I can't picture him as Bond at all, but I thought the same of DC before I saw CR, so I hope to be proved wrong, should this story be true.

SpectreOfDefeat wrote:

It may, and we'll end up with a very 'serious' Bond with a Hardy/Nolan combo... and people think DC is serious Bond. I can't see a Nolan Bond showing much lightness and humor.

The Hardy rumour is a load of crap.

He can't act, anyway. He's just a thug who plays thugs. Almost every role he takes is a gangster.

Re: Poll: Who would you like to be the next James Bond in Bond 26?

Oof, can’t act?

Given source I suspect this is a deliberate leak to mollify certain quarters, however...

He may need to borrow DC’s QoS lifts...but his height hasn’t stopped him playing some triple
hard bastards. Let’s check out his Bond credentials...

Intelligent actor? Yes.
Looks good in a suit? Yes.
Wry, dry, humour to keep the British end up? Yes.
Convincing with a gun? Yes.
Significant risk of seducing your wife 3 minutes after meeting her in a casino..? Yes.
Convincing killer? Yes.

...and the mumbling all seems to stem from interviews and Bane.

Pretty hard to sell him as a disaster, even if I do think it’s misdirection.
