I gave these a whirl, they have a lens that is more sized like the bartons, and the totoise looks pretty classy and they are Amazon Prime so if they are not good easy back they go.

While we're on the topic of sunglasses, if the Tom Ford Williams are too expensive\scarce, Maui Jim makes a (fairly pricey @ $300) alternative, the 787 Swinging Bridge sunglasses.

Sold! You should get commission. Think I saw a review of them on a different menswear blog once actually and always fancied giving them a crack given their value.

Has anybody any update on John and Iconic Alternatives - it's been worryingly quiet etc does David Z have any news?
  • bosoxfanbosoxfan Posts: 611MI6 Agent
No, I still check regularly, the other day when I went to the website it asked about cookies which I thought might be a good sign, but as far as I can tell nothing has changed and still no word from John since he completed his move to NYC

Has anyone found a decent alternative for the Barbour Graham? I’ve been obsessing about it lately. The real one is out of my price range

Your post (and the Budget Bond thread) for me, at least, reminds me of a line from Twin Peaks season 3: :)) :)) :))

    Hi John,

I know I’m late to the party. I only learned about this forum a few weeks ago. I am desperately looking to acquire one of these limited edition Orbis ties. I know very few were made and are long since sold out, but if anyone can help connect me with someone who may have a spare or is willing to sell, it’s you.

My name is Michael Quigley. I’m willing to pay a premium for one depending on condition. I know the tie retailed for $115. I am willing to buy one that is “like new” for $300. Please let me know if you can help.

    Many thanks,
    Michael

Okay, I've got something fun to tide us over until Eon decides if they want to make #25 or not. :v

For the last year or so, I've been working with Aklasu to create a grenadine tie inspired by Connery's neckwear in Dr. No and FRWL. And I am very happy to announce that the tie is finally ready to go!

    Rolled.jpg

We are going to do this as a limited edition tie, with only 45 being made with the extra details. We've gone with a midnight navy grenadine garza grossa silk and used the reverse side of the fabric for more texture. The tie is a 3 fold construction, so it has some heft to it; blade width is 3.125", so it's a pretty timeless style (not super skinny). And everything is handmade in Lake Como, Italy.

    Some detail photos:

    Blade-and-tail.jpg

    Gren-closeup-2.jpg

    Like many here, I'm not a fan of having products overly branded with Bond logos (not to mention the fact that I don't have any rights to using Eon/Bond imagery :D ). So to identify the tie's source of inspiration, we went with a small, tone-on-tone embroidery on the tipping based on the escutcheon from the Bond family coat of arms. I openly admit that I got the idea for the embroidery from the amazing pins Chriscoop created a while back. Cheers to you, sir! -{

    Tipping-2.jpg

The limited edition versions will also come with a post card insert giving some details about the tie and the tie number.

    Orbis-Tie-Post-Card.jpg

Aklasu wants to launch the tie to the public around the 2nd week of September. But part of the deal for my involvement was that the community here got first crack at it at a special price. When we go public, the tie will retail for around $119.00 U.S. I've worked it out so that there are 5 ties reserved for AJB members priced at $99.00 U.S. plus shipping for the next 10 days. Once those 5 are sold, the price goes up to full retail.

I just want to be clear that I am NOT, in any way, getting any money out of this. I did get a free tie (it was the sample we used and it's the one in the photos in this post). But no cash is coming my way from the tie sales and I'm not being paid as a consultant or anything like that. This is just a passion project for me and I was lucky enough that Aklasu wanted to give it a shot. :)

    Gren-Tie-with-Suit.jpg

If you are interested in a tie, just PM me here or email me at john@iconicalternatives.com. Right now we are working on final shipping details. The ties are coming from Canada, so shipping to the U.S. should be relatively low cost. For the UK, we are looking at doing one bulk shipment of ties to a friend I have there in about 2 weeks time and he will then mail the ties to the buyers. So (hopefully!) you will only need to pay for shipping within the UK.

To wrap this up, I will say that I am really happy with the tie I received. It's a little heavier and stiffer than I thought it would be, but (for me) the color, the texture of the fabric, and the width are all exactly what I was looking for in a gren tie. Plus, it created a damn near perfect dimple right away. Working with Aklasu has honestly been a pleasure. They are really excited about the project and hearing feedback from the Bond fans.

Hopefully, if this goes well, we can develop other projects for some Bond-inspired neckwear!

    Cheers all!

    John

I just realized I forgot to paste the link, here are the shoes that I was referring to:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07KWTTXPM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They arrived yesterday and I wore them today and I am really pleased and impressed. Soft leather, nice fit, great look and no significant creasing which was what I expected to be a problem. I think I hit a winner.

For some reason “Washed Black” Corduroy Trousers have been hard to find. Anyone have any they have found that could be a nice alternative to the now confirmed Massimo Alba cords in Washed Black that Craig wears with the Green trench? Seems like this would be a relatively easy alternative to find but the fact that it’s more of a “washed” black has made it a tad tricky.

Do you guys know if there's an alternative for a cocktail cuff shirt to the TF one? (No T&A or Mason & Sons)

Was it ready to wear or customized? BTW many thanks for the suggestion.
If anyone else knows other brands please let me know

Well, you send in your measurements (or measurements from a shirt that fits you well) and they produce the shirt, so it is not exactly off the rack but it is certainly ready to wear and my fit was really good.

Sure thing! I've ordered the Dark Brown myself and look forward to pairing it with the new Moltons.

I'm digging the moss green as well, didn't DC wear a green one similar for an interview or something not that long ago? I had recently ordered something similar from Gap but when it came I was completely disappointed with it. This one looks very nice.

Correct - he wore the Rag & Bone Avery Cardigan in Army Green. If you want something closer to that color, check out Kent Wang's offerings https://www.kentwang.com/outerwear/shawl-cardigan-green.html

What's great about their knits is that you have the option to customize the sleeve and overall length as well as select more color options.

Hope this helps you with your decision!
