Its a funny thing, the power of the media. Craig is undergoing a mysterious transformation from little known but respected jobbing actor into international superstar. Lets face it, before he was cast as Bond he wouldn't have got near a list like this. Good luck to him really. :)

Yes; naturally. He was building along quite nicely and I think he would have been reasonably well-known in a couple of years, but this will undoubtably blown him into a big star. It does look like he's not going to be just Bond, as he has a couple of large-ish films coming out soon, plus His Dark Materials, which he picked up post-CR, will ensure he's out there being more than just the face of Bond. It's interesting stuff: Eon have actually picked someone just as they're becoming exciting (unlike their choice of title song singer! ;) )!

As for the poll; it's all fun really. I know a couple of girls who made little squee noises over him in Layer Cake, but obviously hed have never made this on his 2005 fame levels alone!

This perfectly sums up how nicely Craig's status is growing. These days, the old media articles slamming Craig look ridiculous, and there's already a sense of "told you so" against them.

I love the way that 'movements' such as Craignotbond are failing so miserably, and that Craig's growth into a popular star has been stronger than any of their childish assults.

Blimey- that's getting tenuous. You're really having to reach for those Craig-bashing angles now, aren't you? I'd brush up on your insults if I were you.

Who was #1? Lemme guess, either Brad Pitt or Johnny Depp...hey, that means Craig beat out one of those, or even Orlando Bloom! :o

More than a few women I've talked to find Craig attractive.

One -- whom I find quite attractive -- said she would choose him over Brosnan any day, and that she might actually see a James Bond movie now. That sounds like a slam against Brosnan, I'm sure, but my point is that she's a young contemporary filmgoer who has avoided Bond in any form, including Brosnan's financially successful outtings. Craig is attractive enough to her that she's actually contemplating seeing the movie just because he's in it. So, it doesn't surprise me that there are women (and some men) out there who find Craig to be their cup of tea -- and, horrors, even reject other people's ideas of what is attractive.

I'm sure that this person's attractiveness doesn't make her any more or less qualified on the subject.

That's echoed amongst my circle. In fact I'm the only Bond fan I know, outside of fansites. All my friends and co-workers (okay, I know two people who like Bond, but neither cared for Brosnan) just shrug and walk away or smile politely if I mention Bond--at least they have in the past. There's a lot more interest in Craig as Bond, these days, the kissable quotient is definately there with him that I've heard. I've also heard comments similar to GS's student's re Brosnan being too campy to take seriously in the role, words to that effect. To whatever extent, there does seem to be a section of the movie-going public for whom recent Bond films meant nothing. Whether Craig/CR will tap into this crowd--and whether as Loeff hopes they balance out (at minimum) the (boycotting) anti-Craigers--has yet to be seen.

I've not heard many negative statements from any of the people I know personally. The worst is that he has blond hair, which is an issue even I have some contention with.

Absolutely inconceivable my dear as far as I'm concerned, since dear Orlando is wayyyy higher in my list than Craig. No wait, Craig isn't even in my list! :))

I must admit, I'd have trouble compiling a list of top five (because I'd love to kiss more than five :)).. but Orlando would definitely be among them. With George (Clooney). And Hugh (Jackman) and Matthew McConaughey sharing first place. And Patrick Dempsey and.. Marat Safin obviously. :D

But the most kissable of all still remains... a guy who isn't a celebrity and whom I am really fond of. A girl has got to keep her secrets well hidden. :x

This has nothing to do with Craig's kissability, but does relate to the general subject of Craig's suitability to be Bond. I mentioned I downloaded the trailer to the new Bond film to my 20-year-old son who is visting me while on leave. He said, "Oh yeah, that's the one with the new guy." After watching it, he said it looked really, really good. No issue with Craig as Bond at all. I know you can't really extrapolate from a single reaction, but my instinct tells me that for all but the most rabid "Bond freak," Craig's physical suitability for the role is a non-issue.
  • bluemanblueman PDXPosts: 1,667MI6 Agent
There seems to be a theme developing...Bond fans are split, some don't like Craig as Bond and some do, or have come to it over time, however it's come about. But for non-Bond fans--which I've always thought of as EON's bread and butter--Craig seems to be fine if not someone who's actually "breathing life into Bond," to paraphrase a recent headline. As odd as it may seem to some around here, there do seem to be people out there who weren't that high on Brosnan in the role and are looking at Bond differently--with interest--now that Craig is in the role. It's an interesting thing IMO. Will it equal box office...there's the rub.

Sorry Blue, HH and Gassy, but I don't think that one can deduce at all that only Bond fans or 'Bond freaks' dislike Craig. ;) Since Craig was announced as Bond, I've had conversations with up to a dozen friends, relatives and aqquaintences, none of whom are big Bond fans. Most have never heard of Craig and don't particularly care either way. However of those who have expressed an opinion, it was always negative. This includes my best friend who hates Bond with a passion and who is amazed that Craig was cast. In fact my mother's reaction to the trailer was 'he's so ugly!' So, if I were to go by the people that I 'surveyed,' I could easily deduce that the general public dislikes Craig. :p

At the end of the day though, I don't think any of it means anything. CR will probably be a success, albeit not as big a success as DAD. Of the people who will go see it, some will go because they are Bond fans, some will go because the product and/or Craig interests them, and some will go out of curiosity. Just like with Dalton, I don't think we'll know for sure until Craig makes a second film.

Not saying only, Dan, just observing that from my POV the intense dislike for Craig is among Bond fans exclusively. Not scientific at all, just haven't met anybody who thinks he's wrong for Bond, and can't remember a conversation that wasn't very positive about Craig as Bond. Dunno why, but then again it's not like I'm out there conducting polls or anything, lol. Just the way the talk flows with the folks I know with whom the topic arises. And, interesting that others are having similar conversations outside of the forums. That's all. Very anecdotal, sure. And not sure if it means a hill of beans. Just putting it out there...

Also seems to be a direct connect, those for whom Brosnan wasn't much are intrigued by Craig in the role. Again, just an observation and seemingly mirrored by some, and not by others. I'm sure a psychologist would have a field day with all this: those who don't like Craig as Bond seem to find others of a like mind, those who do like Craig as Bond find folks who agree with them. Kismet...or something. :s

I think the thing is your average punter on the street just doesn't care about this stuff as much as us.

Yes they may have a feeling about whether they like the guy, but ultimately they won't be analysing whether he's good for the part. They just want to see a good movie.

Perhaps the polling is being tainted by the person doing the polling. ;)

Sadly I have to offer another male opinion on this thread, which surely calls for the expert input of MBE, Monique, Mrs Dalloway and Lady Rose, but who are conspicuous by their absence...

To follow on from other comments, in the late 80s cinema wasn't quite so popular, though was beginning to recover a bit with Die Hard and the like.

The Bond films appealed to that cheery family viewing thing. Now films are more culty and appeal to different factions and still be a hit. Casino Royale doesn't need to be your chicken in a basket crowd pleaser. The audience has moved on.

I'm here! I have been reading this thread but it has just been following the usual path. However, seeing as you asked for my opinion ...

Of the four of us you mentioned , we know were Monique and MBE are on the whole Craig thing and I am pretty sure Mrs Dalloway is pro Craig, so, so far, that splits the board down the middle. As Alessandra has rejoined us, that has just tipped the scales in favour of the anti Craigers.

I think we are the only regular female posters here, which is a shame but I actually think it is a fair indication of public opinion with Craig.

Of my friends and colleagues I really haven't heard anyone say a bad thing about Craig. There are few that are sitting on the fence but I really don't see any out and out negativity and I have heard many say they think he will be really good.

As for the actually kissability ratings, I would take Craig over Orlando Bloom or Brad Pitt anyday. I have turned full circle with Craig, based on pictures of him I really did think he was awful but after watching him and listening to him he definitely has grown on me. He has a sexiness about him and glint in his eye that is very attractive.
