After 4 months of 2-3 late nights a week and prolly about 100-150 hours of study, I finally got finished with my EMT-B class last night! (for those of you who don't know what that is, its the first step of the Emergency Medical Technicion training proces in becoming a Paramedic) It felt like the class was never going to be over, and now that it is, I don't know what I'm going to do at nights. 
Anyway, for now I get to keep my job on the fire department until I go to take the state test for the class, then if I pass that I get to continue to keep my job.

Think that was a big issue recently in the uk. Someone died because the paramedic was not allowed to give insulin or something.
Yes I am very limited to what I can do on calls. There are 4 levels of the EMT. First Responder, EMT-B for Basic, EMT-I for Intermediate and then EMT-P for Paramedic. With each class you take you add skills to your scope of practice (the state limitation sheet for what each level can do) You can start at the Basic level which is pretty much the foundation for all of the other levels, but you are very limited in what you can do. Once you get to the Intermediate level you can start IV's and push more drugs, and Medics, well they are like god's
Yeah I'll get them sometime. My department requires 6 months to a year as a Basic before getting the intermediate license, and the Paramedic course is 9 months long...so it will be a few years before I'm done.
EMT was my job during my college days (many years ago!)
