Dr No's plot...

Sorry to ask such a banal question, but I haven't seen DN in ages -

exactly how was Dr No disrupting the US space launches? I remember he had a bauxite mine on crab key, but I don't remember any missle silos or anything.

And why - what was his motivation, blackmail?

Dr. No was 'toppling' the US-launched missiles...basically sending them off-course and splashing into the ocean, I suppose, by disrupting the gyroscopic controls of the rocket via radio. The whole operation was powered by the nuclear reactor on Crab Key, which seems like a lot of power for simply transmitting a radio beam.

As for motives? I can't recall that it's ever made clear, but since it was a plan involving SPECTRE, I'm sure money would be involved. Either the intent was to cripple the space program in hopes of extorting money, or some foreign power may have been paying them to do it.

There were alot of Chinese in the background, and SPECTRE was working for the Chinese in YOLT.

But Bond speculates its just Doc No being ****ed off that he'd lost his hands.

I think herein lies the motivation:

"East, West, just points of the compass, both as stupid as the other!" ... "I offered them my services but they refused. Now they'll both pay."
    "Watch the birdie, you bastard!"

I think there was a financial element to it, but I think the real reason was what Bond said; "Does the toppling of American missiles really compensate for having no hands?" No seemed to believe that it did. ;)
