It was David Bowie's 60th Birthday a couple of days ago. It got me to thinking which song of his I actually like the most.

I narrowed it down to Space Oddity, Life On Mars, Drive In Saturday, The Man Who Sold The World, Sound And Vision, Heroes, Ashes To Ashes, Lets Dance, China Girl, This Is Not America.

And that's as far as I got. I could not decide which one of those wonderful songs I liked the most, though there may be some significance in that I am curently listening to The Man Who Sold The World.

Hard to go wrong with Bowie, but for me the best is anything off Ziggy.... Listening to "Starman" right now.

I'm a HUGE Bowie fan---and I'd still like him to do a Bond theme...as for my favourite, it simply must be "Heroes"; but I still buy and enjoy everything he releases B-)

Funny I should stumble across this admiration for Bowie. I'm listening to:

"You Oughta Know" by Alanis Morissette, my favourite solo artist. It's one of my favourite songs, and as it's been a while since I last listened to it, I put it on today and rediscovered my love for Miss Morissette. :D
"He’s a man way out there in the blue, riding on a smile and a shoeshine. And when they start not smiling back—that’s an earthquake. and then you get yourself a couple of spots on your hat, and you’re finished. Nobody dast blame this man. A salesman is got to dream, boy. It comes with the territory." Death of a Salesman

Reminds of J. Giels Band album, ("Live" I think) that said "Made loud, to be played loud".

Yep, that's him, M5. There's a great radio station here in greater New York that loves to find artists that few Americans know about (Cat Empire, from Melbourne, is another band they're showcasing). They've been playing "New Shoes" since about November. Paolo has also been over here to do some small sets, mostly things like late-night television. I have ordered his CD These Streets and can't wait to hear it stright through -- for a kid of 19 years, he sounds amazingly soulful. I'm hoping to see him live. This is one of the best things about living in NY.

Ah, I remember that one! Used to listen to that every day! Great song, one of Simon and Garfunkel's best. I just never understood the last part...

"Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio, our nation turns its lonley eyes to you... woo woo woo... What's that you say, Mrs. Robinson? Joltin' Joe has left and gone away... hey hey hey..."

According to Wikipedia, the song is about Mrs. Robinson, who enters a nursing home who views her as not very useful. Hence, "Look around you, all you see are sympathetic eyes..." Which is also why it was released on the album Bookends (I assume it was because bookends aren't viewed as very useful, either). Generally, it was about the plight of the elderly in society today. The article talks about the context of The Graduate film that it was written for, but I still don't understand the concept of Joe DiMaggio... Does anyone perhaps have some more knowledge on the subject? I'm afraid the topic of early baseball is way before my time. :)

Simon and Garfunkel's songs always were on the intellectual side. That's what made them unique. Great song! {[]
