I assume it won't be on HD-DVD then.

I saw the commercial for the CR DVD twice tonight for the first time. Ironically, that's twice as many times as I saw an ad for the movie during its theater run. Actually, "twice as many times" may not be mathematically correct, since I saw CR advertized on TV exactly 0 times, and 2 times zero is still zero.

IEU2D: Is it true that there are no commentary tracks on the DVD?

I hope I'm seriously wrong, but I suspect (based on reviews I have read elsewhere) that quite a few people are going to be disappointed with the Casino Royale DVD?

There are no commentary tracks. There are no Casino Royale trailers, though there are of other Sony films. The Bond Girls Are Forever documentary is not new, it has a feature of CR added on to the old one.

Some reviewers complained that because of a poor transfer SFX/Digital tricks that were invisible at the cinema can be seen on the DVD. Other reviewers complained about problems with the sound, but that could be due to the way they have their DVD sound set up.

Perhaps it's a rush job? Or perhaps many of the best features (including commentaries and CR trailers) are being saved for the Ultimate Edition DVD?

    Very disappointing if true... :(

This is Sony after a little bit more money. they'll release this Version of CR and then in a few months release an Ultimate Edition Version.

I'll still most likely buy both though. =D

Very very unlikely. All of Sony's movies are exclusive to the BluRay format. So is the MGM library, if I'm not mistaken. Sony is one of the major backers of BluRay and developed much of the technology. Unless they lose the format war to HD-DVD it will be a very long time (if ever) before you see Bond on HD-DVD.

According to Amazon.com, there are no commentary tracks. Here is what they list as features:

    * Available Subtitles: English, Spanish
    * Available Audio Tracks: English (Dolby Digital 5.1), French (Dolby Digital 2.0)
    * Becoming Bond: An intimate look at how Daniel Craig stepped into the role of the 6th James Bond.
    * James Bond: For Real: Inside look at action and stunts of film
    * Bond Girls Are Forever: Closer Look at Bond's Leading Ladies
    * Chris Cornell’s Music Video, “You Know My Name”

As for the video quality issue, that strikes me as a bit odd. Generally hi-def video releases are the ones that highlight FX shortcomings because their dramatically increased resolution can bring out even the minutest flaws; standard DVD's don't usually have that problem and I wonder if the reviewers were referring to the BluRay version (that same issue has cropped up in a number of BluRay releases). I've also read that the high-def CR DVD uses the older MPEG-4 compression scheme rather than the newer VC-1 method. MPEG-4 BluRay DVD's have been widely criticized as being visually inferior, which again makes me wonder if the complaints pertain to the hi-def disc.

I can deal with a lack of commentaries (though it ****es me off), but poor video transfer and sound quality issues would be absolutely unforgivable. Fortunately (or not!?) I'm still at the 'standard' DVD technology level...

Of course, they've got my money for the 'Ultimate Edition' down the road...the vicious *******s X-(

the trouble is they now know that most of the hardcore Bond fans, like ourselves, will rush out to buy the DVD, just like we rushed to the cinema multiple times to see it. and when they release an Ultimate Edition version, we will most likely rush out to buy that too.

    Damn them all.

and do we know what scenes digital discrepancies can be seen in. I didn't notice any in the cinema. and if you can't see any on a screen that big I don't see how you'd see it on a TV screen watching a DVD, High Deff or not.

I'm definitely going to wait for the Ultimate Edition. I've got all the other movies in this edition so for the sake of a uniform DVD shelf I'll have to restrain myself now.
Anyone have a clue when the UE will come out.

I'm going to wait too. Its actually my birthday in March so I was going to ask for it, but the extras look so poor I decided not to bother.

I got that Bond Girls are Forever doc free from a national newspaper in the build up to the release of Casino Royale! :s

I've seen the ad fro the DVD about 4 times now...I hate the way they've spliced the song...the way they did the splicing doesn't even make SENSE! *sigh*

Here's the first review of the US DVD release of CR I've come across. While the reviewer doesn't seem to care much for the movie itself the DVD receives very favorable technical review with no mention of any problems with the video or audio.

There's also a review of the US BluRay high def version over at IGN; very positive all around with major kudos going to the visual and audio presentation. Looks like they did a good job with the MPEG-4 transfer, at least for the US release.

It's on pre-order, but for a film where they kept bashing on about how bad pirate copies are and how they've got to beat them, putting out a DVD with this few extras (don't forget that Bond fans in the UK have already seen everything on this disc before it's released!) seems like madness! If I had a decent quality pirate I certainly wouldn't see any point in buying this official release.

If only they could have put the wonderful BBC documentary 'The Real Casino Royale' on there- a really excellent feature that I'm happy to watch again and again. It deals with all four versions of CR in a very intelligent manner.

Yeah this DVD seems to be a pathetic slap in the face. There might be two hours of extras, but when you've already seen those documentaries on TV at the time of the theatrical release there's nothing to whet the appetite . . . and the lack of any commentaries is absolutely unforgivable for a Bond DVD.

I'm not sure who is actually releasing this DVD, but it immediately makes me think of George Luca$ and the greed he has shown with his continued re-releases of Star Wars. You just know there is going to be a better DVD out soon so why not release it in the first place rather than trying to rip people off. Of course supporters of this type of cynical and cold-hearted business strategy will say "you don't have to buy them" which is such a weak argument.

Yeah- you can get a pirated copy.

You shouldn't of course, but they really need to up their game if they don't want people pirating these films.

They need to make the prices more competitve, the greedy gits. If DVD's were say £5. Loads more people would buy them. If they don't there going to lose even more money to copies and downloaders. Especially as copies are same quality as the real thing now and download speeds are so high. You can get a film in no time.

    Interesting stuff; thanks, Tony.

The reviewer seems to actively dislike the movie itself, and doesn't really like Craig in the part, but he loved the title sequence and calls YKMN 'one of the best' Bond themes...

The reactions elicited by this Bond film continue to amaze and enthrall :007)

I couldn't quite make sense of what the reviewer was getting at as he seemed equally cool to both Craig's and Brosnan's outings. Still, when it comes to DVD reviews, I tend to ignore opinions on the quality of the film and focus on the quality of the actual transfer.

Here's another review of the standard def DVD from IGN. The video and audio presentation again get high marks although he does confirm that there is no audio commentary. The presentation of the menus also appears to be vastly different from the Ultimate Edition DVD's. Oh, and he loved the movie too. :D

Here's another culprit. I bought 'Children of Men,' last month and now in March, there's a 2-disk special edition coming out in a week or two. That is really annoying. X-(

Amazing. Craig is a selling point now? A year ago he was the death of Bond...hard not to crow a little. FYI, he's reportedly up for the role of Lucifer in (I believe) Zack Snyder's adaptation of Milton's PARADISE LOST. Up against Heath Ledger for the part, is what I saw. Snyder has the much-ballyhooed "300" opening about now...
