Bonham's Offers Bond Costumes

Bonham's is having a great sale (today!) of film and televsion costiming.

You can view the catalog here:
http://www.bonhams.com/cgi-bin/public.sh/pubweb/publicSite.r?sContinent=EUR&screen=Catalogue&iSaleNo=15337

Most of the excitement has centered on Obi Wan's Star Wars cloak but there's a good deal of Bond memorabilia. Much of it is routine stuff, but there are few stand-outs like Tracy's OHMSS fur coat:

Buyer Beware....there has been a fair amount of discussion on questionable validity of over 70 percent of these costumes....even some of the Bond ones are wrong.

    Just home from the auction....awesome...:007)

but Dave was right...some of the items are plainly wrong, especially the Obi wan cloak, although someone thought it worth £45k plus £6 premium and tax..?:)

The bond items were mixed, with the 1st 2 Brosnan suits going for £7k each, the blue suit only £4k, the ski suit £4k and the westin jacket suit (TND PTS) £7k...

Then there was the Roger Moore naval jacket £9.8k, and the Diana Rigg mink for £10.8k...

and of course, the SC thunderball tux for...£28k

all plus 2/7ths extra in add-ons...

    things that broke my heart...

the david Niven hat from CR-ap cost some sucker £2.5k!!!!...:s

but there were load od beautiful women, (one girl bought Teri Hatchers dress just to wear to a ball!...just as well as it only figures in the TV-obituary sequence....) and one guy bought Andie Macdowells hat from FWAAF in spite of his wife trying to stop him bidding...very funny...:D

all in all a great auction

if anyone is interested in any specific prop (price, authenticity, etc) just ask...

Definitely; I've had a look at the catalogue and the Dr Who costumes are laughably wrong- clearly never worn onscreen as they claim. The Christopher Eccleston jacket (which was at least withdrawn) is clearly a completely different style to the one worn onscreen- not even double breasted!
They seem to have passed off a load of fancy dress costumes as the genuine thing. This 'false front TSWLM' jacket thing was clearly never used onscreen as Roger doesn't wear a wetsuit in that scene as they describe!

Only one of the Dr Who costumes were said to have been worn...in fairness to Bonhams, they make it clear they were only exhibition costumes worn by the actors..

The Obi Wan cloak is probably the most questioned of the items..yet it went for $100k+

Agree on the Moore false front....but it didn't sell anyway...

With a bit of research, a dvd, and of course, actually going to the auction viewing, it's possible to minimise the risk of making a complete howler!....

In one of the features on TSWLM UE DVD a stuntman mentions a false front jacket worn under a wetsuit used in TSWLM, but the scene was cut from the final edit, so I guess it is that.

And I've yet to see proof of that. Apparently the Tom Baker 'costume' was literally worn by him a couple of times at a signing about ten years ago when he couldn't fit into his old one. He popped down to Angels and hired that one for the day. And some nut paid £24,000 for it...
The guy who spotted the innacuracy in the Eccleston jacket has told of his efforts to get it removed from the auction and the sellers refused his claims many, many times, despite it clearly being a completely different jacket. And apparently the only verification came from Tim Angel himself- so from the person who has the most to gain! Hardly unbiased! :)

To be fair, I think it was tried on by Eccleston when they were choosing his outfit, but that's a long way off being screen-used. And apparently the listings all started off claiming they were screen-used... I'm glad I didn't get involved with this auction- I don't trust the sellers. For this amount of money they should really have made sure they knew what they were talking about.
