Over the past year I had the oppurtunity of being Editor-in-Chief of my High School's newpaper. A few weeks before Casino Royale's release, I had the oppurtunity of writing a preview article for CR that went in the Entertainment section of the latest issue of the paper. Just thought I'd post the article to see what you guys would think of it, even though its old, and I mean old, news.

With the fall movie season comes the long awaited return of a certain British secret agent we all know. James Bond is back in action, and perhaps the most exciting aspect of the latest James Bond film, Casino Royale, is that there is a new actor filling 007’s tuxedo; Daniel Craig.
With all the supposed drastic changes that have been made to the most successful film franchise in history, one wonders what to expect from Casino Royale’s new Bond and the film in general.
Over the past year there has been great controversy over whether Craig was the right man for the job. Many have said that he doesn’t fit the Bond build (did we mention he’s blonde?). There is even a protest website threatening to boycott Casino Royale. The film itself is also said to be much different than any of the previous 20 Bond films.
It’s definitely a twist that after forty years on the silver screen, 007 is going on is first mission. Based on the original James Bond novel by Ian Fleming, Royale is the origin story of Bond, the prequel to the previous 20 Bond films. Audiences will finally see how Bond got his taste for vodka martinis, fine tailored suits, and beautiful women.
“He’s got rough edges, that’s for sure,” Says Craig of his interpretation of the famous spy. “And as the film progresses we see him become the man that we all know, love and hate.”
Producer Barbara Broccoli, daughter of original Bond producer Albert R. Broccoli, knows more than anyone what the cast and grew are trying to convey through the film.
“We’re going back to the character Ian Fleming originally conceived. It’s not a period piece or anything like that. It’s set today, right now, and it’s got all the action fans have come to expect from the movies. But we’re getting back to the essence of Bond, to the Bond in Fleming’s first 007 novel.”
Its good to know that Casino Royale will keep true to the seriousness of Ian Fleming’s original vision, and at the same time have the jaw dropping action sequences that today’s audiences have come to expect from Bond.
007 will also be once again romancing the ladies, but this time around, it is Bond who gets his heart broken. Eva Green plays Vesper Lynd, a woman who will ultimately form Bond and haunt him for the rest of his life.
“She's the only woman that Bond falls in love with,” Says Green, “and she shapes him and she's going to have a great impact on his life. He's going to become the Bond that we know, and that makes it interesting.”
Casino Royale is clearly taking the world of James Bond to new territory in many ways, but one must wonder if the drastic change is necessary. The most recent Bond film, Die Another Day, was the highest grossing of the series and was indeed an example of the traditional “Bond formula.”
“There’s no point in making this movie unless its different.” says Craig. “It would be a waste of time unless we took Bond to a place he’d never been before.”
Audiences will have to decide for themselves whether or not the new Bond is an improved Bond when Casino Royale hits theatres November 17th.

I won't be around to write a review for Bond 22 in college either. Ya see, I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (that means I'm Mormon) and will be leaving to serve a two year mission for my church when I turn 19. Unfortunately I won't be allowed to go to movies on my mission so I won't be able to see Bond 22 until I get back, two years after it's release!
P.S. Shame you'll see Bond 22 two years later, but I understand why, good luck with all!

By the way, I was talking to my Dad about seeing movies on a mission and he said that, depending on what Mission President I have, there's a chance I will be allowed to go to a movie every once in a while. The chances of going to a Bond movie are extremely slim, however, but cross your fingers for me!
