When did Vesper know about kidnapping?

Long time James Bond fan here. I have been lurking and was motivated to jump in because I am perplexed. I have not read the book so maybe my question was answered in the book.

I have watched CR several times and I can't figure out at what point Vesper discovers her boyfriend was kidnapped?

My sense is not until late in the poker game, maybe around the time she refuses to approve the additional $5 million or after her capture by Le Cheffe.

Earlier in the film seems too early. I don’t think it was prior to her being assigned to Bond by the Treasury. That would be too random. How could the kidnappers be sure that she would be the one to accompany Bond to Montenegro?

Is it generally accepted that she is the one that tells Le Cheffe about Bond figuring out his “tell?” If so, I guess she would have been told of the kidnapping prior to the start of the poker game, which disproves my theory of finding out later on.

Thoughts?

I think it was a long term thing that happened way before the events of CR, and Vesper was always in someone elses pocket. It's doubtful she would have fallen for Bond in any way if her boyfriend had been jacked so near to the events in the film. Her concerns would have been wih her boyfriend and falling for someone else would have been the furthest thing on her mind.

Good point. I didn't think about the newness of any emotional trama as it relates to cozy-ing up to Bond.

If its any help in the book, Vesper's lover, a Pole had been held by the Soviets for some time. She was a serious leak way before the events in CR.

I suspect that is the case in the flm as well!

Yeah, I'm with that. His fate was held over Vesper before the events we see.

    Another 2 cents worth...

Her lover having already been kidnapped, accounts for Vesper's inital "prickly demeanor"; her critical outlook on the mission "if you fail, our goverment will be directly funding terrorism" and her harsh assessment of Bond.

Most importantly Vesper's refusal to provide the last 5 million to Bond very nearly scuttles the mission.

It's difficult to answer, because the kidnapping is quite superflous.
Don't forget, she was layed out in the road, with a good chance Bond would run her over.
If she knew about the kidnapping from the start, she would have already divulged the account number, thus she becomes expendable.
Therefore she would need to gain Bond's confidence to get the password (her behaviour was quite the opposite. Also why would Le Chifre try to kill Bond (poisoning him) - Reason to stop him winning, and collect the money himself, so he did not need Vesper. Only after Bond had won, did he need the password and account. Well if he knew that Vesper could extract the money anytime after Bond had entered the passord, why torture him for it, why not just let him enter it at a later date. And then of course, the briefcase (does it contain the money????) was lost at the bottom of the sinking house. So how did Mr. White come to have it?? what a coincidence!.Sorry when you look deep into the plot there are a number of holes. Still ALL will be revealed soon enough in QoS

Both Le Chiffre and Vesper Lynd were expendable to the Quantum syndicate, maybe Le Chiffre was ignorant that Vesper Lynd was a spy from the same side as him while Mr. White had undercover operatives keeping tabs on what was going in the hotel with Le Chiffre and his little group unaware of their presence ("The first thing you should know about us is that we have people everywhere").

Mr. White moved in to kill Le Chiffre not only because his failure at the gambling table, but also because his financial failures indirectly killed an important Quantum client (Obanno), he was a big lead to Quantum that had MI6 and the CIA right on his tail, and he nearly rashily sacrificed an important Quantum mole in the British government (who by then had more of a chance to get the money while distracting a top MI6 operative).

I'm not sure about Mathis, but Lynd may have told Mr. White who told Le Chiffre about James Bond's gameplan and other secrets (like the tracking device).

    ALSO:

I'd say it is a good guess that Vesper Lynd was blackmailed into being a double agent for Quantum for at least 18 months, but we do not know if her Algerian boyfriend is a Quantum agent too.

And Mr. White got the briefcase perhaps because it had a tracking device and flotation airbags, while he may have employed sophisticate surveillance devices to both help and hinder Le Chiffre (like inform Le Chiffre of Bond's tracker beacon because Mr. White had a satellite tracking device set on the same frequency as MI6's, while sending out a plane drone to observe the car chase and then to track down Le Chiffre's cars to the derelict barge).
