Activision Announces Bond Racing Game

Last year Activision acquired developer Bizarre Creations and pretty much since then the rumor was that they were secretly working on the second Activision-published James Bond game. This turned out to be true according to a recent announcement by Activision at an In-Game Ad Conference. Playing to the strengths of Bizarre Creations, which is best known for a number of great racing games such as Metropolis Street Racer for the Sega Dreamcast and the Project Gotham Racing series on Xbox and Xbox 360, the next Bond game is said to be “racing-oriented”. No details have been announced other than the racer is not tied to any specific Bond film and that the game is currently planned for a September 2009 release. The first Activision James Bond game, Quantum of Solace, based upon the films Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, was recently released this past November.

I know 007 racing was pretty apalling on the PSone - but with the high standards of racing games out on the market now -I think with the right people behind it we could actually end up having an awesome racing game. I just want the gadgets to kept to a reasonable minimum though -and for there to be decent chases like the bridge chase in EON (I think that's the game if my memory serves me right.)
Plus really good exciting environments to drive through - cities, mountain roads, tunnels - plus maybe not just using cars -a boat chase would be cool and maybe using jetskis etc. Either way I'll look forward to its release.

Bizarre Creations, which is the developer coding the game, does have a very good track record with next-gen racing games. They're behind Project Gotham Racing 3 and 4 for the Xbox 360 and those games feature some of the best racing on the console. So I am hopeful that they can do a good job here. I only hope Activision gives them sufficient time and resources to release a finished polished game with some replay value and not a quickie, generic experience like the QoS videogame.

I think that getting excited about Bond games only gets you disappointed when released. For the last 3 games Ive been excited about their release and with each Ive felt that the final product is second rate.

What annoys me is that I think if they made another game in the style of EON - large game play, original story, star talent that they very well might make the best Bond game...but no

If I had it my way.

Ahem - GoldenEye. Either the DB5 v. Ferrari or else the tank would make for pretty awesome chases.

But we are speculating idly, whatever we think may work well in a Bond racing game may not turn up in such a game.

The problem I have with racing games is that they seem very repetitive. No mater what the car, no mater what the terrain - you do essentially the same thing over and over.

...maybe if the two elements were combined as they were in Everything or Nothing...(pretty please)

Hopefully it turns out to be a Mario Kart style racing game with huge bobble-headed characters...

    No? ... Just me?

Hopefully this game will be smart with the choice of mission and aviod the repatition that 007 raceing fell victum to. I too would love to see missions based on the various car chases from the films, the closest so far that we got to that was the tank driving level in Goldeneye.

Why was there no driving in the QOS game? That really was its downfall

This isn't necessarily a bad thing. Activision dropped the ball on QoS. They released it at the height of the holiday shopping season, in the same week as the massively hyped and anticipated Gears of War 2 no less, and as a result QoS got lost in the crowd and was quickly forgotten by most gamers. That hurt the game saleswise right out of the gate. It's also no secret that QoS lacked polish and could have used a few more months (at least) of development and fine tuning.

Pushing back 007 Racing tells me that Activision is least aware of their past mistakes and are taking things a little more slowly this time. The game is being developed by Bizarre Creations (makers of the Project Gotham series); they're a good house and can put out a good product if given the appropriate time and resources. Releasing it in early 2010 instead of the crowded 2009 holiday season will also help draw more attention to the game as that's typically a slow time and gamers are starved for new content.

Activision paid quite a bit for the Bond license ($70 million as I recall) and releasing a bunch of rough, unfinished games directly against mega-franchises is not the best way to recoup their costs. Better to take it slow and give the developers time to get it right.

I hope if this game does get published, the designers don't rush out to the stores like they did with QOS. I have to admit Activision is really not impressing me with their recent games and decsions. First they drop the Ghostbusters video game which would have made then a ton of cash in sales, then both Spider- Man: Web of Shadows and QOS under preform in sales well other publishers continue to sell games hand over fist.

I hope that they can get their act togher for the next Bond game, as QOS showed they really should take the time to program and promote the game better, EA despite a few mistakes really used the licence to there advantage and it still shows.

I was just thinking did Activision say anything else about this game during E3 last week?

I know that they are focused on games that will be published in 2009, but some times the game companies drop hints of their other works in progress, and I wanted to know if anyone heard anything.

No James Bond gaming info was released at E3. QoS' sales were really disappointing and the game was not received well by the gaming press. In light of that, I wonder if Activision is having second thoughts about the Bond license. They recently dumped quite a few high-profile licenses including Ghostbusters. Considering that they once said they were planning to release one Bond game a year, the lack of news is somewhat troubling.

Seeing as there has been absolutely no information from either Activision or Bizarre Creations (the developers signed on to make the game) I don't even know if there will be a game at this point.

As to what it should be like, the idea of having an out and out racing with cars from the James Bond universe always seemed a bit odd to me.

Personally I've always fancied the idea of making the game an MI-6 training simulator that Bond (ie: the player) would use to hone his driving skills; that way you could recreate and expand some of the great chases from past movies as well as come up with new scenarios specifically for the game.

I am beginning to wonder if Activision canceled this game, as I have not heard anything about it some time. Also it seems like they currently have their hands full with other games at the moment so the next Bond game will have to wait for now.
