And My Heart sinks a little, :# Sam Mendes is IMHO Just plain wrong.I predict a "Lovies" Bond Fest, Plenty of moody reflective emotional scenes,Some in slow-motion. Second "Getting Over Vesper" instalment. I'm sure It will keep many here Happy,Hope I'm wrong, still keeping my fingers crossed that some of the old style will be brought back.

I've never seen Road to Perdition but I hear its wonderful and his experience with that would seem to warrant his chance to direct this. Or maybe he was nominated by Daniel Craig who appeared in that film. The fact that Mendes has worked with Craig before gets me excited because maybe the prior 2 directors just didn't know how to handle Craig's version of Bond, which I love.

Road to Pedition was a good film. Probably better looking than it was entertaining but good. Will he give us a fun film ? I hope so.

I'm happy with the choice of Mendes; he's a talented filmmaker, and I wouldn't necessarily assume that his take on Bond will be a redux of "American Beauty," or be as reflective as the also-great "Road to Perdition." The thing Mendes brings to the table, IMO, is the ability to surprise. He could turn out to be the next Guy Hamilton, who knows?

A little of the Hamilton vibe would go down pretty well about now. {[]

I would be shocked if Mendes approached a Bond film in such as tongue and cheek as Guy Hamilton. However after Marc Forster's garbage, I'd be greatly relieved even for such a film.

I know this was rumored a while back. Looks like it's turning out to be true. If your curious what peoples opinions were when it was a rumor, I linked the rumor thread to this one.

I'd ideally love another Martin Campbell film. GE and CR are my favourites of Pierce and Dan's. But that wouldn't happen for a while again I suspect, if ever.

But Sam could do something special. As long as there are no 'Babel' style scenes like QOS, with the symbolic dripping tap stopping etc etc., or the childs cries during the fiery climax. I saw 'Revolutionary Road' last year and It was kind of boring, but that was the material more than anything. 'Jarhead' was fairly action orientated and was good.

Interestingly Mendes and Forster both worked on 'The Kite Runner'... ?:)

I don't think Mendes will go all emotional on this one. I mean it is clear what way the Bond films are, and have been, and no director will stray too much from that, but might instead put their own, original twist on it

I have to Disagree, I think Mendes was Chosen Because he will go all emotional ( To give Craig all those dramatic moments to show off his great Range,All the stage Thesp Types love this ) as for a director straying from what the Bonds once were just look at QOS. More Bourne than Bond. I do think the Producers now see the Bond series as some form of high art and so need really artistic types,Instead of accepting Bond is a great action/thriller franchise that just needs a Good action Director, some one who understands the pace of a movie.Instead we'll get more Emotional scenes,Slow-motion shoot outs, mabey laced with some more Art-house techniques. I'd sugest some soft focus Infra-red Colour Footage, which I think has never been used in a mainstream Action Movie. :#

I have to agree with russianhat or at least hope he is right. Maybe this is an opportunity for Mendes to have some fun and let out his inner fanboy and make a nice mash-up of the old and the new. I just don't believe that EON wants a rehash of QOS...I get the feeling that while QOS did well at the boxoffice (partly do to high expectations based upon how good CR was) EON doesn't believe that they can get away with something subpar a second time and needs to deliver the goods this time out or risk Bond films becoming totally irrelevant.

If that didn't happen with old Connery or old Moore or bad Dalton or bad Brosnan, kinda doubt it happens with prime Craig.

EON asked Forster back, doubt they considered QOS subpar, it's just a different type of Bond film, excellent at what it did but agree not what EON wants every time out. The character arc is completed, on to bigger fish to fry, namely Quantum. 23 will likely please fans of OTT Bond films like YOLT and TSWLM, I just hope they don't leave the acting on the cutting room floor - I think that's why Mendes is getting the nod, EON wants to continue what they started and keep things relatively real. Looks to be a good choice, guess we'll see.

After the frenetic pacing/editing of QoS, I could go for a bit of languor this time round...we'll just see if Mendes takes Eon to the art house---for some reason, I doubt it on an instinctual level. One thing Mendes can also do, IMO, is be funny. Do that with a bit of darkness, have a tie straightened properly, and all won't be lost! :007)

I tend to think that Mendes is overrated and thought The Road to Perdition was too much angst and not enough movie, but I will say that I'd prefer having a director with some sense of personal style over someone more generic as an actioner. And Mendes might well be prepared for a better film because he might try to view Bond as a three-dimensional character and not simply as a franchise formula. I just am hoping his wife isn't in it.

Maybe Winslet will become N, to Judi's M. And take over MI6 by Bond 24? -shudders at thought- :s

Funny really, he's like the director of Atonement, who is married to Bond girl Rosamund Pike. Can see them do an atmospheric, evocative type film, having read Summer of 42 style opening of OHMSS (just brilliant) you can imagine them recreating it to the letter...

I'm surprised EON havent tried James Ivory for Bond 23. He'd be right up their Street.

It'll really be interesting to see who EON brings in to re-write or finish the script. I have no idea what they got out of Peter Morgan or if they plan to start over from scratch. Good thing about having a director like Mendes on board is he probably has the ability to re-write or polish the weak points in a script. Unfortunately long gone are the days of having all that magnificent Fleming material to translate to the screen...too bad EON isn't willing to put out the money to option some of the Gardner books to adapt for the screen. I've only read two of the Gardner books (many years ago) but it's gotta be better stuff to mine than what Purvis and Wade come up with.

The best Gardner books would make decent films but not so enthralling they NEED to be adapted.

    I doubt it too.

But that's because EON (I hope) have learned their lesson with arthouse directors after QoS and will no longer be willing to give them as much free reign as Forster apparently had. Which is okay, because with the rise in Bond's artistic credentials there will hardly be a shortage of hoity-toity directors willing to submit to EON's demands, all for the prestige of directing a Bond movie. Almost subversive on the part of EON when you think about it. ;)

As for Mendes, I haven't seen any of his films yet but judging by some of the comments here I can only hope he'll lighten up a bit and spare us QoS 2.0.
  • bluemanblueman PDXPosts: 1,667MI6 Agent
I'd love QOS 2.0 - action movies, including a lot of recent Bond films, are generally dumber than a post with "witty" banter to match. That's what was cool about Bond back in the 60s, he was so much more than that. CR started a trend, QOS took that and ran with it. I know Forster was asked back, but doubt even he would repeat the same stylistic choices for 23, I think he had a clear vision for QOS and took Bond on that shot-from-a-gun ride (I'd love that approach for every Bond film, but that's just me, literally I'm sure!).

Not thinking a Mendes 23 will look that much different from a hypothetical a Forster 23, somewhere between CR and QOS I'd guess with either director (ie both are savvy enough to tailor their choices to fit the particular story they're telling). If that's "art house," where's the paint and I'll hold the ladder in Loeff climbs up and does a little splattering on the shutters, add some cool texture. :007)

Not overjoyed at the prospect of Mendes.

He has a touch of the Marc Forster about him and as I really didn't like QoS, that does not bode well :#
  • LexiLexi LondonPosts: 3,000MI6 Agent
I think Mendes is a good choice for where the last 2 Bonds have been going (anything like Kathryn Bigelow or Christopher Nolan would be too much of a shift in the opposite direction.) I would like to see this arc finish, a sort of gentle sweep back to center.... especially if it's Craig's last outing as Bond :#

As much as I loved QoS - I think another 'sylised' film would then pigeon hole Craig's tenure as 'The arty' Bond, rather than the more classic Bond, that I am sure Craig is very able and ready to depict.
