Plugs thread

Recently saw the AVTAK making of book being advertised in the James Bond films sub-forum, and it gave me an idea.

Personally I think it a little rude for people, both on a private or commercial basis, to register, post a blatent ad for their product and then to disappear in the ether.

To keep things a little more organised, and to help people find said adverts in the future, how about having a dedicated 'Plug you product' page?

Would be advertisers could then post their wares to be peddled in this thread for people to look at, at their leasure. It would save other threads and sub-forums getting spammed up with incorrectly placed adverts. Si might even want to charge for the privalidge of being able to advertise to such a wide range of bond fans, and for maximum exposure I'd suggest placing the 'plug your product' thread at front door level, not in the merch. sub-forum, as a lot of members don't go in there.

Just a thought.

It is indeed somewhat rude for people to register and post for the sole reason to promote some service or another. Much of it is removed if it is clearly spam or unrelated to the theme of the forum.

We try to keep the number of sub forums to the minimum, but we can certainly discuss this corralling of advertisement-type threads.

Totally agree with Minigeff! Unless it is a project under-discussion by AJB members any commercial plus should be kept in a separate sub-forum and closely monitored by forum staff. This stops the other sub-forums turning into free advertising for people who don't really give a rats-arse about the forum but just join to sell their items.

Private sales of active and contributing members are fine as are AJB home grown projects but not commercial companies using the board only for self-gain.

Just my two-pence worth (two-cents if you are American.)

Maybe we need a new dedicated sub-forum for that too? :))

    Nice thoughts....doesn't work though...

People whom come to sell/promote their stuff here will look to just post it anywhere...and certainly not in a sub-forum that could be seldom visited...we have a dedicated ebay thread...yet some will post a new topic to advertise their ebay stuff...the only solution is to monitor and move these type of posts...and please feel free to either inform a MOD or use the post report button for a post that falls into that category...

I respectfully disagree. I run two forums myself where we do exactly this and am heavily involved in a third which does the same. Many items are traded on these boards although trading is but a small part since the focus of all three is academic study of historical subjects (non-Bond related so won't bore the membership here). This has worked pretty well for years.

If, of course, AJB doesn't want to do it then that's fine as it is only a suggestion. However, it can and does work so don't write it off too quickly.

    It will only work if people adhere to it...and over 10 years of experience here tell me it doesn't...you only have to look around some of the forums now to see people proving this....I've no idea how you manage to stop people posting where they like on your forums...but I'm ready to listen to how you manage it... -{

Well from my years of forum management I have managed to get it to work - and on forums busier than this one. There is no major secret, its just good forum management, clear but simple rules and an active moderating team. BUT not over moderation either - afterall you want the cooperation of your members and not alienate them.

Perhaps begin a thread for members to discuss this issue and bring it to the attention of the forum. Ask them for their thoughts and ideas - although you will of course need to not get distracted by the negatives some will post. Work with the membership and get them onboard. I have found such methods increase the policing of the forum while gaining the cooperation of members happily.

I don't claim it is perfect on my forums but the few minor issues that arise are quickly and easily nudged into the correct place.

You appear to be talking about members that actively participate on the forum...we seem to have the problem with people that post once, maybe twice, then are never seen again....and that was the original point being made.

Yes, I have also had the same problem. One solution is to implement a 100 post minimum before members can post items for sale. While this might seem like opening the flood gates to posting for the sale of it believe me hit and run posters won't bother even doing that. If they breach this you simply delete their post and email them the reason one. Repeat offenders are deemed a spammers and banned. We have also operated a policy where, if we feel there is a very good reason for an exception to this, a member of the forum staff (usually the Forum Administrator) will post about the item if it is deemed of importance or of particular interest to the forum membership going beyond the run-of-the-mill items ones sees all the time - e.g. important one-off never to be seen again items of great importance to a Bond collector.

Anyone who is a dealer in Bond merchandise could not be permitted to openly advertise their items on the forum. However, they could be permitted to place a link in a dedicated sub-forum to their web site. Private sales could be contained within a dedicated sub-forum and stricly policed. Anyone advertising 20+ items is probably a dealer whereas someone who makes a one-off run of 5 Sky Fall clapper boards is not. Strong but fair policing does keep this all in check but I admit its not a perfect solution as no perfect one exist but it can work in the main.

Maybe I should charge a consultantcy fee ;)

But you have to get people to agree to the 100 post minimum...and spammers and people who just want to sell cheap mobile numbers will not do that...we delete and ban the spammers ASAP....and move - or try to get the person to re-post - their items in the correct forum/thread...and certain items could be time sensitive, and having to wait until that person racks up 100 posts would probably be too long....take a look at the brilliant Charles Helfensteins book on OHMSS for starters....but for him posting here many would not be aware of his great book. Unless a MOD posts about for him...and didn't you want AJB to show more protection to it's members ? If a MOD posts about it it could be seen as endorsing the item...and thats dangerous ground....you know, life used to be so simple once :s

All you need to do is be honest in the post advertising the item. Basically make it clear you and forum have no direct connection with the item nor the seller and are not making any profit from it but are bringing it to the attention of the forum for the interest of members only. It is no different to linking to an online auction for a Bond item - you have no connection to the seller as such, not responsible for the sale and not making any money from - but you do it because you think members might be interested.

Handled properly I don't think it is dagerous ground.

Forgot to add...that someone whom has made 5 clapperboards has made lots of other items that he has been kind enough to showcase and offer for sale on AJB...this would put him in your 'dealer' category...and his work is superb...I have some of it :D

True, but then he has a genuine interest in the forum and isn't making a living from it. Its treading a fine line between helping a fellow Bond fan out now and again or solely using and abusing the forum as a free advertising space. As you say - its not black and white but sometimes all we can do is go with commonsense. As I have previously admitted, nothing is perfect :))

I would like to get this back on topic (or at least more back to where it started). The cufflinks is not something I am aware of and if you wish to discuss it further I will open a new topic and move the above posts in to it.

From what I gather we are here to discuss a trading forum. I believe view points with both arguments have been well presented. On one hand it works with the right membership (or non pushy visitors) on the other hand it doesn't (wrong type of sales, lack of sales, members not paying attention with where to post).

I am neither for or against at the moment, I do feel that there is very little that can be done to stop one off postings. Sadly there are some good one off postings (the not so good do get deleted). Do we really delete even the good ones.

Would people interested in the films (not so much collectibles, props, posters) want to go to a specific forum full of for sale items just on the off chance? I can very much see it working from a collectors point of view as you don't necessarily want something but you've always got an eye open.

We need to cover both. Ultimately would it's own forum get used? Using examples of projects which then get sold where is the dividing line between the project and the sale?

Something to finish off the cufflinks saga might not be a bad idea. I would particular like to know what happened to them and the results of the project etc. I suspect we might not know the answer to this but if we did it might finally put the debate to bed and the thread could be archived off.

    Just a thought...
