    Today's rant;

    'TheRPF.com'

    I decided the other day to join up to the rpf in order to meet new mates, see what was going etc etc. What I didn't realise is that new members have to have their hands held at all times, with every post being checked by a member of the admin team. This also seems to apply to private messages.

    I've pm'd the admin team, but nothing, nada, zip, zilch, sweet bugger all.

    The worst bit is that I have to make 20 posts and wait 45 days before getting upgraded to the level of membership where you're free to go play without ya minder holding the reigns. So I'm to wait 45 days plus when I decide to post (which might not be every day) I have to wait around 24hrs to get my posts checked out. Oh and my second post never made it, and I never was told why.

    So at the moment, I can't post, I can't send pm's, I can't buy anything cos by the time my communications get checked, the stuff has sold, I can't sell anything as a noob, and no one answers my emails to the admin.

    RPF, you suck.

    And you should get used to it I say!

    Being married for over 12 years, I know exactly how it's like when every word from yours is being checked, double-checked and censored and at the end of the day noone is really listening to you :D

    I can't really put a label on this, so here goes;

    150,000 immigrants go 'missing'.

    Front line troop numbers to be reduced even more.

    Another bank scandal.

    Phone hacking.

    Budget cuts left right and centre.

    'human rights' laws.

    everything being sold out to some foreign country.

    Oh but don't panic, we got the olympics.

    Here's something a little more specific.

    Correspondence.

    It's become a more usual occurrence these days, you could even say the norm, that people can't write a letter properly.

    I'm wondering, is it because we've gotten so lazy that we depend on technology to correct spelling etc? The amount of times I see there, they're and their mixed up is getting a joke.

    Anyway, grammar and spelling aside, the most annoying thing I find is replies to enquiries via email.

    Say, for instance, I spot a product, the only one priced at £120, and only 1 of 6 on the website. let's call it a fridge, my email reads something like this;

    Dear Sir/Madam

    I've seen you have an item for sale, a fridge at £120. I've got a few questions about it.

    If I collect in person, could you do a cash sale?

    You state it's graded as highly efficient, can you provide a certificate to prove this?

    The picture on your site shows additional shelves in place, are these included?

    Thanks for your time, I look forward to hearing from you.

    Regards,

    Blah blah blah.

    The reply I get is;

    Hi, the egg holder is the door is included, it's graded A.

    Dave.

    How the f@!k do these people make a living?

    I replied saying I think he had got the wrong fridge, and I was asking about another one.

    'we don't do that one anymore'. Is the only responce I could get.

    To 'businessmen' everywhere;

    Read your bloody emails before replying to them, and learn how to write a sentence, you might even want to use a little context so things are clear as well.

    And if you don't stock an item anymore TAKE IT OFF YOUR SODDING WEBSITE!!!

    Bloody fuggin tossers.

    2 things are really yanking my chain at the moment.

    Every time I pick up the phone at work, there's a pre-recorded message on the other end of the line, wittering on about Payment Protection Insurance claim-backs. If I wanted to find out about this, I'd bloody google it and make my own enquiries about it. Sod off.

    The other major bug-bear is customers not paying their bills. We do purpose-made work for them, they love the stuff and then they decide to announce that it'll be some time before they can pay up as they've haven't got any money. Errrr excuse me??!! I would love a Ferrari, but I don't go to a dealer, sign the papers, demand the keys before declaring that I can't actually pay for it. Would they do their weekly shop at Tesco's and then tell the cashier that they'll pop back in 6 weeks to settle up? Completely grinds my gears big time!!

    And whilst I'm at it, people who can't be bothered to say thank you when you hold a door open for them. Is common courtesy truly a thing of the past these days? :#

    Actually there is video of childs anouncing cruise as reacher, and saying he's the only actor who can bring him to life because of his acting skill, not his stature, or words to that affect. This was in front of a room full of students and reacher fans, who instantly booed him. I am a massive reacher fan, I have all the books but I'm willing to give cruise a chance. Although they could of picked someone a wee bit taller admittedly, don't know who that would be though.

    I could totally buy Cruise as Reacher... If they cgi'd him like Hagred in Harry Potter. Seriously. The trailer looked good, and then Ethan Hunt squared off to a half a dozen guys, and he was the smallest one there! The whole Jack Reacher thing is the fact you know he's going to kick half the room's ass and intimidate the other half! He's not Bond, he doesn't handle himself well and get his arse occasionally kicked only to have to resort to mentally outwitting his opponents. He just bulldozes them. The guy is 6'5" and ranges from 220 to 250 lbs that's eighteen stone as near as dammit.

    Well Gerard Butler was one name, though I have to admit not having read the books that the Reacher thing mystifies me... what is he, what does he do? Just a wanderer from town to town in the mold of The Fugitive or Incredible Hulk TV series, righting wrongs and beating people up. It does sound a bit like your 1980s B-movie thing featuring lunkheaded hunk of your choice. I can't get a handle on him.

    Sorry, but I don't buy that at all, (not saying he didn't do it, saying that he thought he was the only actor) I listnened to an interview Child gave on radio 4 about 4 years ago... and they talked about bringing his books to film. Obviously the interviewer asked who he had picked as playing Reacher... Childs didn't have an answer, but he did say "well it could be anybody, however I wouldn't choose Tom Cruise for obvious reasons" he named him... and dismissed him... which is why I am aghast as to why Cruise has got the role (although I hear that Cruises film company bought the rights to the movie... so it was almost out of Childs hands) And I don't care how good an actor Cruise is - he isn't in my opinion - he is just NOT reacher.
    They are saying that they are playing the juxtoposition of Cruise's hight, with being mentally 6'4 rather than physically - BOLLOCKS - the height of Reacher in the book is a fundemental part of who he is. It's his stature that has made him the man he is... and also his feeling of isolation. I'm sorry, but Cruise is just a bad casting, and nothing, NOTHING will make me watch him in this role.

    Mmmm, I can understand the parallels between Craig/Bond, and this latest Cruise/Reacher... but to me, a difference of hair colour, and let's say 3 inches is not too much of an issue.

    Reacher is 6'4 and 220lb's and this has made him the person he is. He's intimidating, and his stature alone wins many of the physical battles he is in.

    To me, Bond being blond, and a bit shorter, makes no difference in his success of being a good 007.
    Of course many would disagree, but I feel that the differences of Cruise to Reacher, far outweighs a shade of hair colour and a couple of inches.

    And as for your last comment.... of course not :))

    Yes, there is a radical difference between a man 6'4" weighing 220lb, and Tom Cruise, so I do understand your point of view. It appears that size is everything.

    I am no fan of Cruise myself but I remember when he was cast as 'Lestat'' in 'Interview with a Vampire' and there was all sorts if controversy then and he was excellent in the role. Same with Renee Zelweggar and Bridget Jones .... However this isn't just a case of casting someone with a different hair colour or accent. Reacher's size and build is his whole thing ... One thing Cruise can't change no matter how hard he tries.

    Today's rant;

    Ignorant tossers.

    This isn't directed at anyone here, but on another forum I'd messaged someone about an item they've got for sale. I wait, and wait, only to find that, no my offer hasn't be accepted, no there's no haggling to be done, no the item isn't for sale anymore and no there's not even the common courtesy to say this to me. I find it all out by looking at the original post only to see 'sold' next to the item.

    So please, if you're selling something, or someone sends you an email or message about something that's a tad urgent, don't be a complete prick and ignore people, even if the item has sold or the moment passed, just a quick line to people to explain can save a lot of messing around.

    Try the first few novels. You'll love it or hate it. It's not highbrow, but it isn't down there with all the ex-SAS turned so called writers. If you like classic detective, action and thrillers you should enjoy them. The character is an ex military cop from the US army, who after being cut loose after the cold war and having served all round the world just drops out and hits the road. He travels light and doesn't need anything. To this end, he's like the western drifter who pitches up and takes on the bad guy in the town. America is full of backwood towns and counties, and ripe for a corrupt town official. But Childs writes bang up to date, and has Reacher amongst terrorist plots, kidnappings, FBI undercover operations - even prequels him back into the military. The unique part of the novels is that Reacher solely does things because he feels it's right. He doesn't need any trappings, money - he's incorruptible. The size thing matters because he's not a beefed up bodybuilder like Arnie, he's just like a back row rugby player who with military training and can take down half a dozen guys in a bar. Having him small is like Indiana Jones without his whip and hat, or Bond without the tux, car or gun. I've no doubt people will love Cruise as Reacher, but I can't think a fan of the series would buy into it. Who knows? People bought Craig as Bond. However, the void is cavernous in comparison to Jack Reacher.

    I meant to get hold of the first Reacher book, but it never seemed to be in the library, and wanted to do it chronologically so you get the same vibe a long-term reader would. Like parvenu fans asking if they should read Bond novels in order. :)

    It's odd, Hollywood, the way it goes thru phases, so not many musclebound leading men these days, they're all of the 5 9 build - hey! like myself :p - but you don't want that in the movies all the time, you want to mix it up a bit. It's like you don't get women in film looking like they did in the 1950s, like Gina Lollabridgida, they all have to be Britney type waifs.

    The Olympics is a complete con only serving to line the pockets of a select few private investors, sponsors and conglomerates who, may I add, haven't even fully funded it as was planned. 11bn of public money has been spent to bridge the deficit.

    On the subject of austerity, I have always said that belts need to be tightened, that there is only so much fiat currency you can print on tick without selling off every single wealth creating asset the country has - But when 11bn is pulled from the ether, as front-line services are being buggered, I can't see how that works.

    Reminds me of when Nero would host lavish games, but the people were too poor to attend or those who did, sat there starving. Keeping up appearances, eh?

    It just daft you have McDonalds and so on as sponsors, a missed opportunity overall.

    The soldiers would rather be doing the Olympics that patrolling for roadside bombs, I'd bet, but a bit of a drag if one of them with post traumatic stress disorder offloads a load of weaponry into a crowd of visitors.

    Today's rant;

    Hidden charges.

    I dunno whether it's the current financial climate, peoples attitude towards making money or lack of honesty, but there seems to be a hidden charge for pretty much anything these days.

    A couple of examples would be today I booked train tickets and a ticket into the barbican. Both times I had to pay a booking charge.

    A more ridiculous one was at a recent stay in a crap hotel, we had booked a table for a carvery meal. As it was tea or coffee (which neither I or my wife drink) we ordered 2 cokes. The waitress went and got them, charged us £3.90 (which couldn't be charged to the room) and buggered off. On check out, the final bill was presented and there on it was our 2 cokes (which we paid for at the table) plus a £2 admin charge. £2 for what exactly? I told the lass on reception I wasn't paying it and she wiped them off straight away. Makes you wonder if they were 'accidentally' added to the bill in the first place.

    Anyways, it appears that no matter what you go for, or from where you buy from, the price advertised is seldom what comes out of your pocket.

    That would liven things up...
