anybody working out today? if so, what are you doing. Im not, still getting over a cold ive had all week. Also,if they did, which of the Craig Bond films got you motivated (or more motivated) to better yourself physically? and if it wasn't any, who inspired you to work out or push further?

For me it was Casino Royale because i only began to work out just a year prior to seeing the film, but i gotta say that Skyfall has made me more intense about getting my bodyfat level really low (its between %11 and %13 now) for the "hollow cheek" look that DC has due to his single digit BF level. And my other work out inspiration is Harrison Ford in Temple of Doom.

Heading to gym late afternoon...doing arms today...biceps and triceps. Will finish up with a 64 gram protein drink called Protein 7 Cookies and Creme from Nutrishop. Little too much bourbon last night so also taking an after lunch walk for about 90 minutes with the mrs.

Not that I'll ever achieve the "hollow cheek" look (not without getting very ill again anyway), I think this is a bit too intense for my taste. And even DC himself would admit that there better Bonds to look like facially; well, all of 'em.

But, each to their own goals, I guess.

As an addition to that, I think he looked emaciated and sickly in Cowboys and Aliens because of how extremely low his BF level was, his face was way too gaunt.

Certainly, for me anyway, the best all-round Craig look is the one from QOS.

That would do me. And the TF kit I don't have to go with it. :(

Agree... It was a bad look, especially towards the end of filming. And it carried through to the premiere..

I believe there are a couple of theories....

    1) he was trying too hard for the "western hard man look" ..
    2) this period in his life was agony.. He was breaking up with Satsuki and deciding to go for broke and commit to Rachel.... Anyone who's been in similar situ knows it's hard on a man's face and body as much as his health.

    I plump for 2) - hope that doesn't make me a nuthugger... 8-)

you lost 120 pounds? thats an incredible achievement! well done, do you have a goal weight? and what are your fav tracks from the soundtrack to work out too? i recommend you add this unreleased track http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MY-8IwWdtdI

My initial goal was the half marathon, so I trained for the that and the weight came off, then after I did it I was like what next? I just bummed about and plateaued for weeks then I saw Skyfall. So my nex goal is too look like Daniel Craig. I always aim high and then if I don't quite make it I've still reached incredible heights. Dunno; how close do you want to get to him?

Personally, I disregard theory 2. Sorry, Paul, hope that's okay with you? For his own reason, he moved on damn swiftly to Rache so can't see crisis there. Could be wrong though, Paul?

Reckon it was 1 gone wrong. (****. Paul, I agree with you on something; maybe this enable you to knock your patronising on the head?). Didn't look hard, looked too wisend. In a realistic western it might have worked, not one where the enemy's from space. John Wayne-cowboy needed for this film.

But hey film was rubbish. Am I allowed to say that?

Not to turn this into a "when did Daniel Craig look best" thread but since his level of fitness is a goal for alot of us here i think its relevant. anyway i agree with David stating that its most likely it was the first reason. It just shows that a body fat level as extremely low as he had in C&A doesn't look healthy and made him look gaunt and emaciated whereas he looked way better facially and body-wise in Skyfall at a healthy body fat level, not to mention dragon tattoo which he "let himself go" and filmed right after C&A.

Just back from the gym - worked my legs with deadlifts, leg press, and seated calf raise and then back and biceps (they work together so it makes sense to work them on the same day) with pulldowns, seated row, and preacher curl. After that was interval training on the treadmill (6,8,10, then 12 MPH, then 10,8,6, repeat two more times). Warmup was 5 minutes on the rowing machine.

As for inspiration CR absolutely was a huge boost to me. While I don't want to be *quite* as big as Craig was there I would like the definition and as he and I are the same age I have no excuse...;-) We all get lazy over time and seeing him in CR definitely turbocharged my workouts and was a huge motivation.

As VinnyMac posted up his workout, I thought I'd follow suit for what it's worth. It was back specific today & consisted of:

    Deadlifts
    Pull Ups
DB Rows against an incline bench
Cable rope face pulls -> Reverse flyes
    DB Shrugs (high volume reps)

    Lovely fun ... :D

I'll be there in under an hour - 60 minutes of cardio and circuits followed by 30 mins of weights, mostly doing shoulders and back today followed by a large milk protein shake. iPod with Skyfall soundtrack in hand. That's my daily routine, everyday at 4pm GMT.

    you do cardio before weights?

Yep, usually a 3k on the treadmill then 20 mins on the xtrainer, then to wind down I normally do 20mins on the variant xtrainer after my weights.

    Is that bad then?

Warning: Some tooting my own horn, self-promotion, and links ahead.

First, the horn tooting. I’m a Certified Natural Trainer II, and received my certification from Jon Hinds at Monkey Bar Gym. I am also an instructor in both Burton Richardson’s JKDU/MMA for Street Self Defense as well as Battlefield Kali, and a third-degree blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

My approach to fitness is heavily influenced by my martial arts training. I workout first and foremost to be a fitter, better fighter. I don’t bother with standard bodybuilding stuff, as it doesn’t really help me. With all due respect to Daniel Craig, I care less about looking like I could kill someone with my shirt off; I care about being able to kill someone with my shirt off. In fact, I haven’t set food in a gym since 2006. I rely on bodyweight moves (especially chin-ups), kettlbell exercises (primarily swings, clean and presses, and clean and jerks), plus sprints, shadowboxing, burpees, and jumping rope. These are far more helpful to me than things like bicep curls and bench presses.

Now for some self-promotion and links.

I wasn’t always into fitness. In fact, I was weak and out of shape most of my life. Here’s how I turned that around:

Like everything to do with exercising, it depends on what your goals are and where you're starting from. There isn't one answer for everyone or one routine that works well; if there was everyone would be doing it and everyone would be in amazing shape!

Not knowing your goals I will just say that there is some research that indicates that doing cardio before weight training will have a negative effect on muscle growth. It won't completely negate the effects of your weight training but it will no longer be optimal. So if you did want to gain muscle hit the weights first and then do cardio afterwards. Hell, if your goal is fat loss I'd STILL say do your weights first and then cardio second because of the increased metabolic rate you'll have from adding muscle.

However, if you're training for endurance or to increase your VO2 max then do the cardio first and make sure that it's interval training.

I worked out my cardio today but I did it by pushing a 330 pound sled back and forth across the gym. Your legs are the strongest part of your body so even someone who doesn't exercise regularly can push great amounts of weight with them. I got as good a cardio workout as if I was running, but at the same time I was pushing a heavy enough weight that my legs will also get stronger (which doesn't really happen with running). Also, because of my body position, I was using far more muscles than I do when running and despite the heavy weight it's a very low impact, safe exercise when done right.

as the lordflasheart explained, doing cardio before weights may negate your gains and your workout might not be as good as opposed to doing weights first and then cardio.

Oh ok guys thanks for the tips. I guess my problem is that I'm trying to do both weight loss and muscle gain. Perhaps I should concentrate on weight loss first and then target the muscles in a few months?
  • AdamCarterJonesAdamCarterJones UKPosts: 303MI6 Agent
There will be others on this forum no doubt who have more experience, but here is my advice :)

I have a FdSc in Sports Therapy and have trained all my life in different sports, particularly martial arts, and through this learning I have found the trick is to eat properly first and foremost.

Then you choose what you want to do in terms of fitness. Do you want to lose weight? Do you want to "get massive" or do you just want to tone up?

Either way, I thoroughly recommend high intensity training. This is where you train to your maximum level for longer periods of time. For instance, train hard for 1 minute and rest for 30 seconds.

    Anyone can do it.
You just adapt it to your own abilities.

What happens here is that you lose weight, gain muscle and tone up all at the same time. But you have to stick with it. If you do it properly, you should feel physically sick at the end of each session.
    Best wishes,

It's a common myth that you can't do both at the same time but that's untrue. I've see many people who were able to lose fat tissue (which is different than weight loss) at the same time as building muscle.

However, proper programming or periodization for someone who wants to achieve both is to work on muscle development first and then fat loss after the muscle mass has increased. You will still be losing fat in the muscle building phase and you will still get stronger in the fat loss phase. But you will do the *type* of exercises better suited to each at different times so you concentrate more fully on the specific goal.

Every extra pound of muscle that you gain will burn an extra 50 calories of fat a day - that's just the increase in metabolic rate from having the muscle on your body. So even a modest increase in muscle of 5 pounds (which physically takes up very little space; you won't look like Schwartzenegger) will burn an extra 1750 calories every week from what you do now. That's a half a pound of fat every week from increased metabolism. And of course that's not counting what you DO with that muscle - exercise will burn even more. And of course proper eating is just as important as strength training.

Just to echo what a few have said before : it really is true that a body is made in the kitchen and not in the gym. I'm yet to see anyone who has out-trained a bad diet.

Best of luck to whoever is starting the journey btw.

agree with ya and I've said it several times in the Lodge jacket thread when we were discussing sizing. People seemed to think Craig was Ar-NULD Huge and he is not. He is only 5'10 and 180lbs according to the stats. But you add that person to be seen on a 100ft screen and I start see where people are coming from.

I don't think that people thought that Craig was Flex Magazine material. It was his body composition/shape that seemed like the big topic. 5'10, 180 isn't huge, but when that's mainly muscle, it can bump you up a size or two in the chest/shoulders compared to a guy who's a similar height/weight but never sees the inside of a gym. A typical ajb-er of similar height and weight would be shaped very differently (and wear a different size coat :p ).
