Underneath the Mango Tree...

Am I the only member on this forum who has fallen in love with this song. I adore how it plays so often in Dr. No, almost a second James Bond Theme. I feel like it shows the paradise feel to the film, compared to the horrors at Crab Key Island, which was also pushed in the novel (My favorite Bond novel). It grew on me and now I just feel that the singer sings it perfectly and I always find myself singing or humming it when I'm outside on a hot day.
I also love it how Sean sings a part of the song too.
Anyone else like this song?

Yup, it's a nice piece of work. Did you know that one of the versions is sung by Monty Norman himself? (It's in the background when Bond meets Quarrel)

No problem. And of course you know that the main version is sung by the then Mrs Norman, Diana Coupland (known by Brits of a certain age as Sid James' wife in "Bless This House").

We used to have a member called The Cat, who probably knows more than me, but he's been away a few years. I guess I'm the resident music man.

Yes, I think that I remember him from the early 2003-2005 period that I was a member here. I even remember PM'ing him about a music Bond matter. You appear to be his successor as the AJB Bondian music maestro. There's a very interesting book about the Bond music out at the moment - I bought a copy late last year. I assume you've got it, Barbel?

    Ha! Thanks Uncle Ben. :))

I've got many books on that subject, SM, and even wrote one myself though it's unpublishable for legal reasons that I can't go into. That was a result of one of the court cases over... a certain piece of music... that I've been involved in.

I'm not trying to be mysterious but sorry old man, need to know. Sure you understand.

It's a fantastic song. So good that I bought the soundtrack just for it. As it turns out, the entire soundtrack is enjoyable...but that song is awesome.

Love reading about the music of Bond ... many books you say? I'm aware of the obvious ones, but what would you recommend?

    Recommended-

"The Music of James Bond" Jon Burlinghame
"John Barry- A Life In Music" Geoff Leonard et al

    Avoid
"John Barry: A Sixties Theme" Eddi Fiegel
"James Bond 007 Collection" sheet music, many errors

    Of interest
    "Torn Music" Gergely Hubai

(I did a little work on one of the above, very minor help)

I see that our old friend The Cat wrote the Torn Music one - it deals partly with the music of Dr. No. Was this the one that you were involved with, Barbel?

I love the song for its innocense. It is such a nice innocent song when you hear the lyircis. The world sounds like such a nice place at that period of time. Really makes you feel good.

I was happily listening to BBC's "The Film Programme" on Thursday when they recommended the above book. I was very pleased to hear that, and told The Cat at once. Being in Hungary, he hadn't been listening (how dare he!) but was happy to hear that his labour of love had been endorsed.

(It came up during a discussion of John Barry's rejected score for "The Horse Whisperer", which he later partially used for his album "The Beyondness Of Things".)
