Computers controlled by a swipe of the hand - a staple of science fiction films like Minority Report - could soon hit the mass market as the result of a new deal between Hewlett-Packard Co and a San Francisco start-up called Leap Motion, a three year old firm with less than 100 employees that manufactures sensor units about the size of a pack of chewing gum, which it claims can track the individual movements of 10 fingers with 1/100th of a millimetre precision. The units can plug into any computer.

Hunt for Mars colonists to launch today (warning, it's a one-way ticket)

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/hunt-for-mars- … 07749.html

A seven-month journey in a tiny, cramped capsule doesn't sound like an attractive prospect - especially when you realise it's a one-way trip.

But 10,000 people have already contacted Dutch organisation Mars One to volunteer for a trip to Mars planned in September 2022 - due to arrive at the Red Planet on 2023. Return to Earth "cannot be anticipated nor expected", the firm says.

Forget QWERTY - new KALQ layout speeds up typing on tablets.

A new keyboard for tablet computers promises to speed up typing by a third - by ditching the traditional QWERTY layout.

Researchers at St Andrews University and Germany's Max Planck institute used computers to find the "perfect" layout for thumb-typing on a touchscreen.

The new system, dubbed KALQ, after the order the keys appear in the keyboard (in the tradition of QWERTY), allows people to thumb-type 34 per cent faster on tablets.

Touschscreen typing is slow - most users only manage 20 words per minute - because keyboards are designed for 10-finger typing on physical keyboards.

KALQ is designed for thumbs - created with computational optimisation techniques to search among millions of potential layouts before identifying the best possible one.

Dr Per Ola Kristensson, Lecturer in Human Computer Interaction in the School of Computer Science at the University of St Andrews, said: “The legacy of QWERTY has trapped users with suboptimal text entry interfaces on mobile devices."

The new keyboard will be available as a free app for Android.

The spaceplane being developed by Sir Richard Branson has made its first powered flight. Sir Richard said in a statement: "For the first time, we were able to prove the key components of the system, fully integrated and in flight. Today's supersonic success opens the way for a rapid expansion of the spaceship's powered flight envelope, with a realistic goal of full space flight by the year's end." The Virgin Galactic spaceship is intended to carry fare paying passengers on short pleasure rides above the Earth's atmosphere.

Rolls-Royce is to sponsor the British Bloodhound project to drive a car beyond 1,000mph. The company will provide financial as well as technical support. Its major involvement is to oversee the supercar's EJ200 jet engine, normally found in a Eurofighter-Typhoon. The intention is to break the current land speed record of 763mph (1,228km/h) next year, and then push it beyond 1,000mph (1,610km/h) in 2015. Bloodhound includes key personnel from the team that set the current record in 1997, including driver Andy Green and project director Richard Noble.
