This is great. I'm keen to donate to the campaign. I love their re-recording of the score for 'Zulu', so look forward to hearing their take on Moonraker which is one of my favourite scores, but I'm always frustrated by the fact that the soundtrack album omits the James Bond Theme completely.

This has been mooted for a while. The orchestra concerned has already recorded a couple of unreleased MR cues ("Freefall" and "Arrival At Chateau Drax") which are about a minute each and available on various CDs. There is around 17 minutes of unreleased score.
I have all of the Nic Raine/City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra recordings of John Barry music, and enjoy them immensely. I do prefer their non-Bond work (eg "The Betsy", "Raise The Titanic").

I wonder if the recording will sound like what is in the movie? I remember when I was young getting some Bond CD soundtrack and not noticing that it wasn't official. The songs were sung by different people and the music was off. I assume they have the proper music pages so nothing is missing. There are a lot of people funding too. So maybe this is different and will be good.

It is unlikely to sound identical, but they usually do a very good job of recreating the orchestration of the original. I think their work on Lawrence of Arabia was phenomenal. I have heard a number of re-recordings of that score, and the others pale in comparison to the original, whereas Nic Raine and the City of Prague Philharmonic's recording stands up very well against the original and has the added benefit of great sound quality and unreleased music including my favourite cue, 'First Entry into the Desert'.

They tend to be very good at capturing the later, more classically orientated John Barry sound, which will suit the Moonraker project more than some of the earlier 60s and 70s scores. For example, if they were to do a re-recording of TSWLM I'm not confident about how it would turn out, but with Moonraker I am confident that the finished product will be pleasing to Bond music fans.

The funding goal has been passed with another 20 days to go. I wonder if people will continue donating, and if so, perhaps we will see some more exciting Bond content?

I would love to see some more suites of unreleased music along the lines of those in the Bond Back in Action discs. Perhaps if they raise enough cash they can add a disc-2 of additional unreleased music? They did something like that with their 'Zulu' album.

That would be a dream project I'd love to happen. There are still a few unreleased cues around! Cat, if you're reading this, you know more about that subject than me- have you a list?

So, apparently the kickstarter campaign is cancelled. This is the message I received:

    Dear Everyone
It is with great regret that I have to cancel this Kickstarter project before any funds are taken. Certain rights issues have been raised which might mean protracted negotiations with the companies involved which may well go beyond the end of the project. I would sincerely like to thank everyone for their involvement in the project and if negotiations are successful then I have the knowledge that there is a great demand for this title. Thank you for all your hard word. James

I wonder what the rights issues would be?

Hopefully the re-recording still goes ahead in the near future.

Disappointing; maybe one day? It's only been 36 years so far.

You would think they had the ok to re-record the music before starting the Kickstarter. Or perhaps official soundtrack re-recordings are on the way? Maybe they are just cleaning up those lost tapes for complete soundtrack release?

I would rather they found the lost tapes than rerecorded the soundtrack. The rerecording was mostly being done for all the lost music.

With all of Nic Raine's Bond recordings, I can't imagine what would have come up this time. Raine previously recorded two lost cues from the Moonraker score.

It would be wonderful if they found the lost tapes, but I guess the chances of that happening are very small. Still, even if they did find them I would love to hear a re-recording anyway. One thing about these re-recordings is that the modern recording techniques really give the music an extra dimension. In the last few days I've been listening to some re-recordings of old British film music like The Dam Busters, Reach for the Sky and Ice Cold in Alex released by Chandos Records and the depth and quality of the audio is fantastic. I think Moonraker could really benefit from the re-recording as the audio on the original is not quite as good as many of the other Bond scores.

Possibly because it was recorded in a different studio from usual.
