Off the top of my head:

From Russia With Love/Goldfinger/Thunderball are all great
    On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    Live and Let Die
    The World is Not Enough
    Goldeneye

Sidenote: I don't know what to call it, but I've always loved the psychedelic glimmer/lighting effect they put on the DAF and OHMSS gun barrels. You guys know what I'm talking about?

Listening to each of them now https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7-eYvkDG0A

    I bolded my favorites.

DN - Love the eerie alien-spaceship like sound, followed by the horns.
FRWL - This is the traditional sound we know. Kind of light and airy compared to later themes.
GF - A bit heavier but also brighter and dynamic sounding. Very good.
TB - Sounds very similar to GF's.
YOLT - Has that light airy sound of FRWL (but better sound quality), with some YOLT-like elegance with good guitar.

OHMSS - Kinda has a peaceful energy to it. Swapped a guitar in favor of a synthetic key sound, which I like.
DAF - Opens kind of dainty, and is kind of high pitched throughout.
LALD - Has that Moore like personality to it with a quality horn section, and some drums. Really unique.
MWGG - Kind of fast paced. Settles into some light horns.
TSWLM - A more subdued romantic sedative state, but settles into the standard guitar.

MR - Has a heft to it at first I like, horns later in the theme are like MWGG's. Good.
FYEO - Kinda unique sound. Starts light and then settles into a more rock-like sound with quality horn section.
OP - Slightly slower version of the standard theme. Like the bass on it though.
AVTAK - Starts with blaring horns, gets a little calm and then goes faster paced.
TLD - Solid orchestra. Not very innovative but pretty good.

LTK - Heavy tragic "terror is impending" theme opening, then settles into guitar with brighter backing instruments.
GE - Love the heavy industrial-punk sound. Reminds me of DN's theme.

TND - Standard gunbarrel theme with a nice clean melody in the backdrop`
TWINE - A bit of an electronic sound but more melodic than GE's.
DAD - Starts with energetic horns, like the percussion near the end.

CR06 - Love the wailing guitars accompanied by the horns.
QOS - Fast paced version of the standard theme but best quality sound.
SF - More orchestral, but still fast paced like QoS

Not a fan of the classic gun barrel music, I see. The classics would be any by John Barry, plus DAD and QoS. LALD, FYEO and GE follow the classic form, but they don't have the Bond sound. I don't really agree with your descriptions of the music for each. TND a standard gunbarrel theme? It most certainly is not!

Since I thoroughly disagreed with Absolutely_Cart 's analysis of gun barrel music, I thought it would only be fair to provide a proper breakdown of gun barrel music.

DN - Starts with electronic sounds then marimba, second repeat of the swing section of the original recording of the James Bond Theme starts after gunshot.

FRWL - Starts off with blaring horn fanfare; low vamp with xylophone played once; melody played on surf guitar twice. Set the standard for gun barrel music.

GF - Blaring and brighter horn fanfare; high string vamp; melody played on surf guitar; longer ending with horns.

TB - Full-sounding horn fanfare over string bed; dreamy string vamp with quarter notes on xylophone; melody played on surf guitar. A richer sound for a much more complex score than in previous Bond films.

YOLT - In F minor instead of E minor, horn fanfare with xylophone, low string vamp, melody played on more natural-sounding guitar. Has a slight Asian tinge that would complement the soundtrack.

OHMSS - Blaring horn fanfare over string bed; high string vamp; melody played on synthesiser with countermelody on flute, repeated three times instead of usual two.

DAF - Horn fanfare with flute and xylophone over string bed; low string vamp with tambourine; melody played on surf guitar. Has a bit of a shimmery sound.

LALD - Softer horn fanfare with xylophone; vamp with horns, strings, guitar and drumset; melody played on trumpets and surf guitar; ends with end of Bond theme. A more hip 1970s sound.

TMWTGG - Staccato fanfare with whole orchestra and xylophone; articulated string vamp with ride cymbal and tambourine; melody played on strings and muted trumpet repeated three times with more horns at end. Slightly faster than other gun barrel music. Introduced a new sound for John Barry's gun barrels that the rest would follow.

TSWLM - In F minor instead of E minor; starts with vamp on muted trumpet and clarinet with low strings and horns played two and a half times; melody played on surf guitar three times; ends with a wah-wah chord to reflect the 1970s sound of the score.

MR - Dense fanfare with whole orchestra; jazzier vamp on strings and clarinet with triangle; melody played on strings with trumpet accents.

FYEO - Bill Conti's signature powerful horn fanfare with cowbell; high tremolo string and low guitar vamp with cowbell; melody played on trumpets, up an octave the second time, ending with strings. A bit of a rock and disco flavour.

OP - Dense fanfare with whole orchestra with snare drum; articulated vamp on strings with triangle and tambourine; melody played on strings, trumpet and clarinet with more horns at the end. A more mature sound for the more sophisticated 1980s Bond films.

AVTAK - Much faster overall; dense fanfare with whole orchestra with snare drum and muted crash cymbals; articulated vamp on strings with frantic triangle; melody played on clarinet and strings with horns at the end. Sounds hurried and thus a bit more tense.

TLD - Dense fanfare with whole orchestra with snare drum and muted crash cymbals; articulated vamp on strings with triangle and tambourine; melody played on strings with trumpet accents and more louder horns at the end.

LTK - Starts with epic orchestra piece by Michael Kamen with timpani; James Bond Theme melody played twice on surf guitar after gunshot, melody added on strings and flute second time.

GE - In G minor instead of E minor; follows traditional form but with electronic sounds; string vamp, melody played only once.

TND - Starts with vamp played on high strings, low horns and jazz drums, repeated twice; after gunshot goes to end of the James Bond Theme played on horns. Respects John Barry's sound but changes the form.

TWINE - Follows TND's form but with electronic percussion. Starts with vamp played on high strings; after gunshot goes to end of the James Bond Theme played on horns.

DAD - Return to traditional gun barrel form. Blaring horn fanfare with crash cymbal hits; low string vamp with electronic percussion; melody on surf guitar, only played once.

CR - No separate gun barrel, after gunshot goes straight into You Know My Name and opening titles. Really doesn't count as gun barrel music.

QOS - Blaring horn fanfare with snare drum; low string vamp with triangle; melody played on surf guitar three times. Faster tempo, but so far Daniel Craig's only gun barrel that has music scored for it.

SF - Gun barrel is shown over first repeat of the swing section of the James Bond theme and is not synced with music. Really doesn't count as gun barrel music.

Yes, I concur- an excellent analysis, Matt, including many subtleties {[] .

(How did you notice that the key had changed for YOLT, though? Fool that I am, I often sit with my guitar watching Bond movies and play along with the score, so I had noticed that: are you a musician, too?)

Thanks. I'm glad you approve of my analysis. I noticed the key change easily when listening to the different gun barrel music back to back. I'm not a professional musician, but I've done a lot with music throughout my life. I always notice when music isn't in the key I expect it to be in, though I don't have perfect pitch.

My orchestra teacher in school had perfect pitch and it always puzzled me. I used to have pretty good relative pitch, but I haven't tested it in a while. I'm sure you could tell from my strong preference for Barry's music that I have some musical knowledge.

{[] Yes, and kudos for that. No surprises, but I like the gunbarrel to include as much Barry as possible (and to be at the beginning, of course).

Any thoughts on Arnold scoring pieces of music backwards then
Playing them forwards for the DAD gunbarrel ? Something inventive,
Or a bit of nothing. :)

I was not aware that Arnold scored part of the music backwards. Was the string vamp recorded backwards? It's hard to tell under all the other sounds.

Can't remember exactly, might be on the special features on the
DVD , or like many of us. I picked it up from an interview he did.
As you point out there is a lot going on musically in the DAD barrel
    Music.
To be honest apart from being an interesting exercise in playing with
Sound, I don't really think it adds much to the overall " sound" but as always
I could be wrong and there was a very good reason for doing it. :)

I had created MIDI files of many of the gun barrel themes nine years ago and just dug them up. Mostly John Barry's and a few others. I think I'm going to perfect them, and then I'll share them here.

DAF is the best gunbarrel music - brass, percussion, guitar and that reverb all add up perfectly. Really makes you wish what comes after was better than it is.

    Best:

Dr. No - Love the sound effects in this and the late Bond theme. Love how it works into the titles too.
Goldfinger - Just the way the music sounds, awesome horn (I think) at the end. Great blend into the PTS music.
OHMSS - nice harpsichord type sound.
LALD - groovy and still very Bond!
Moonraker - rich sounding, like the rest of the soundtrack.
    TLD - Rich, more-modern sounding.
GE - Awesome. Probably the best element of Eric Serra's odd score. Love the digital GB too.
    TND - very classy.
TWINE - Love the lighter feel to this one and the timing - seems very video game like.
Casino Royale - I really like this gun-barrel and the blend into the title music.

    Best of the best: TWINE.

    Worst:

TB - don't like the farting horn!
    DAF - too much treble!
LTK - timing seems out, as others have said, not GB music.
    DAD - too comical.
QoS - sounds like it's done on a keyboard.
