I've a been a JB fan since I was a young child. Had many good times watching Bond movies with my dad.
But it seems its all gone downhill since DAD and since DC has played the character.
CR was good, and SF was OK, but where they really Bond films.....or just films?
I saw SP only the other day (after it came out on BluRay here in AUS).....and boy was I disappointed.
Having purposely avoided watching it in the cinema when it first came out, I thought I'd get some public feedback first so I can adjust my expectations. I actively checked this site and generally got positive reviews which I now know where more biased opinions than anything else.
The franchise had it all in front of them and they completely missed the mark with this one. *Apologies for being blunt*
The cast, the title song, the plot, the connection with previous links (CR, QOS, SF), was just a mistake after mistake. Seemed all rushed to me..
Lets hope they get a new Bond actor, some script writers and take their time with the next one (2 years isn't a mandatory timeframe you know), coz they are starting to lose even the avid Bond fans.....
Hi and welcome aboard. In think that the rebooted films have been phenomenally successful from a financial perspective and have garnered industry plaudits and critical approval. DC has won over a number of fans both from within the existent fan base and won numerous new ones. That's not to say that it's perfect, or that DC is my favourite Bond, but there is no denying the impact that he has had. I was initially deeply disappointed when Daniel was cast, but like others in had to eat my words when he pulled it off. For me his Bond is still too much of a one note affair, and the films oscillate between ones I enjoy to one's I find less successful. I often have my gripes with EON, but Babs did see the potential in Daniel when others including the studio (if the rumour mill is to be believed ) and the Director were at best unconvinced.

Oh & yes IMO the title song was among the worst of the franchise!
The song is actually one of the best things in the movie.
If that's the case (I haven't seen the movie yet, I'll buy it on DVD eventually) but based on the reviews I don' think I have much to look forward too.
Quite simply for mine, Writing's On The Wall ranks as lowly as Another Way To Die.

I haven't posted much but this discussion has motivated me I have to say I've only watched Spectre once at the Cinema but I enjoyed it more than Skyfall (which I felt dragged towards the end). Casino Royale is definitely my favourite Craig Bond..because its just a great film if you like Bond or not. Having grown up Roger Moore Bonds though I found a lot to love in Spectre (which for many of you I know would mean a lot to hate ) ). Spectre for me was a TSWLM type greatest hits package, and call me sad but I love those sort of Bond films.
For the record I've read a few of the books and I really think Casino Royale is as close as your going to get these days..decent plotting with a few big action sequences thrown in. The only chance you have of seeing the literary Bond properly represented is if the BBC or such like were allowed to pick up the character and do a dramatization..but sadly the Cinematic Bond is an out of control behemoth so that ain't going to happen.
Yeah, decent plotting and a few big action sequences thrown in connected by a poorly written protagonist and an annoying lead.
Film: Tomorrow Never Dies | Girl: Teresa di Vicenzo | Villain: Max Zorin | Car: Aston Martin Volante | Novel: You Only Live Twice | Bond: Sir Sean Connery
Disappointed perhaps sums up my experience. I was only half expecting this latest film to be better than Skyfall & indeed it was yet how those responsible still manage to spin out a 'storyline' over two & a half hours which at a push should have lasted no more than thirty minutes is a testament to their continued commitment to style over substance. On this occasion those responsible were indeed the authors of my pain. Sterile characters throughout & the stop start nature of the action began to grate from the point Madeline Swann made her appearance. I will go as far as to say that this will be my last new Bond film, at least until those in the driving seat learn that there is much more to James Bond than what they seem committed to produce.
Bond, Bond wherefore art thou James Bond?
Couldn't agree more. SP has sort of neutered my enthusiasm and commitment as a Bond fan. When things look so promising and we're left waiting years to get a movie only to be served up something decidedly disappointing the whole experience just feels like a complete waste. Meanwhile, people will argue the more time they have the better the script will be. Rubbish. EoN have been playing it safe and not taken the strategic bold initiatives it should be taking to follow through with the promising start that CR rebooted with.
The media can fan cast all they want and EoN can waste everyone's time with their elaborate photocalls and press conferences but until some worthwhile creative changes are made and we start getting good Bond films again, I'm not really going to be interested.
Sorry you feel that way about Bond, even with SP being a marked improvement over CR.
Still, SP is in the lower tier of Bond films in my opinion. I don't believe we'd be in this mess if it wasn't for CR06.

I have to say that I agree with this. With a franchise spanning over 50 years and 24 films one would hope that they would have the creative courage and ambition to try to continually evolve the series somehow instead of always eventually rehashing the same old classic Bond tropes and formula. If I want to see a "greatest hits Bond film", I just watch The Spy Who Loved Me or Goldfinger again. I see no artistically justified reason to recreate that style of film anymore in the 21st century. Just write a genuinely good script, drop the lazy fan service and focus on the core essence which is the character of James Bond. Everything else in the films should be open for evolution.
I cannot help wondering what Cubby Broccoli would have made of the DC era films & the direction they have taken the franchise?
Cubby would have been mad that Brosnan wasn't brought back for another film, and he would not have liked the reboot with CR since he didn't like the idea of a reboot with Dalton.

He might have looked at the Box Office takings of Craig's movies
and said " Well done kids, keep it up "
I think both views can coexist.Cubby was a popularist first and foremost. I think the bottom line was what really motivated him. I always saw Saltzman as having the deeper vision for Bond, I don't think the worst elements of the 70's movies would not have happened with him (just a view, and happy to hear others)

But there is still a massive audience for DC's Bond films...so I'm not sure what you say is correct...

That doesn't say much for the rest of the film! Awful song.
