Do you believe in ghosts?

As it's coming near to Halloween once again I was wondering how many of us here actually believe in ghosts (or not as the case may be)?

Perhaps you have seen a ghost yourself or something paranormal at least.

Personally I do believe in ghosts though I have never saw one or anything paranormal for that matter. I will give my reasons for this belief very shortly.

I hope that this is an interesting discussion. :) -{

    In a word NO!
I'm a total sceptic on all things paranormal, as they fail every scientific test. With most sightings
    Being easily explained.

I am not so sure. This a post from me on the Flypast forum.

I know of a few, two local, two on English stations the local ones to me one very local as I live on what was the accommodation site of the WW2 RAF Newtownards On the other side of the main road from our housing development is the Ulster Weavers factory, formerly the Miles Aircraft factory and prior to that the Technical site of RAF Newtownards. During the big air raid on Belfast in 1941 13 junior soldiers were killed when their accommodation was hit by a bomb when a flight bombed the airfield, apparently the station commander took this so badly he hanged himself in one of the buildings ,A security guard checking the buildings in the 80s entered this building and saw the figure hanging from the ceiling.

At Aldergrove an ATC AWO I know well used to work in the old sgts mess she said she was never happy opening up in the mornings and on opening ne day could hear the sound of someone working in the kitchens but no one was in before her.

Of the English ones the first is at Syerston, apparently a police public order unit was training on the base and during a break some of them decided to have a look around some of the old buildings. They entered one and encountered a group of men dressed in WW2 flying clothing quick exit by big hairy arsed coppers.
The last as far as I am concerned is the most convincing as it happened to a friend of mine a former AAC pilot ,Para, jungle warfare instructor an now an RAFVRT officer, as a teenager he was a Flight staff cadet at Lindholm and at weekends the cadets sometimes unofficially stayed overnight at the VGS there. One night he and the other cadets heard a noise coming from the hangar connected to their accommodation the went in to the corridor linking the two opening the door to the hangar the saw it was in complete darkness not even being able to see the gliders sitting a few feet away. What the could see was a grey figure moving along the opposite wall , they watched it follow the line of the wall until it reached the hangar doors walk across the doors to the wall on their side then walk towards them they then lost sight of it. As they turned round the figure appeared through the wall to their right he described it as a man wearing WW2 flying clothing ripped and lying open revealing Polish insignia his face badly injured on one side my friend says if he was shown a photo of this man he would still recognise him 30yrs later the figure turned to look at them an continued on its path. This was the well known Lindholm Willie whose Wellington aircraft had crashed into Lindholm bog and his body never recovered until the bog was drained in the 80s and a body was recovered and given a full military funeral and Willie has not been seen since.

The only thing I have ever experienced was at the Control Tower at East Kirkby, now a museum, it just felt "wrong " and after a short time inside I jut had to get out as it got too oppressive .

    Another about "Willie"

The Ghost of the Polish Airman

In World War 2, Lindholme Prison was used as a RAF base for Wellington Bombers who took part in the first bombing raids on Berlin. On the first raid a bomber overshot the runway and crashed in to the bog, killing all five members of its Polish crew.

For years afterwards, the moors were haunted by a figure in flying costume that appeared at Midnight, asking strangers directions in a foreign tongue.

The stories soon spread to the local villages of Finningley and Hatfield that the distinctive tail of the aircraft could sometimes be seen rising and sinking again when the ghost was on the prowl.

In the 1950's the base was the home to a squadron of Avro Lincoln's, the ghost still appeared. One night a mechanic working late was so scared by an encounter with the ghost that he skipped duty and was brought up on a charge.

The ghost would continue to appear in the middle of night often standing beside the bed of the pilots. One pilot was so shocked by the apparition that he let out a scream that woke the whole dormitory.

In the 1970's the wreckage of the Wellington Bomber was finally recovered and the remains of four airmen were buried in a local cemetery. In 1975, Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Jenkins and a RAF squadron leader were returning from a training course at nearby RAF Finningley when they spotted a figure dressed in flying kit, standing near the spot where the bomber crashed.

The story drew to a close in 1987 when peat workers found the forty-six year old corpse of a Polish airman.

He was never identified and in November of that year he was laid to rest in a military cemetery. Since being laid to rest the ghost has not been seen.

I also do to an extent and also have some personal experience. Generally I'm agnostic about such things including ufos etc but as I've experienced 2 apparent paranormal things I'm willing to believe in something If not the poltergeist book throwing Phantoms!

I tend to view alleged ghosts as "recordings in time" a la the Stonetape theory. This theory suggests that certain events are recorded much like a film records moving images and they are played back in a future time. As to when a ghost allegedly interacts with people? Not sure how to explain those scenarios!

I wonder do those who believe in ghosts ( the existence of which, goes against all scientific evidence )
Then not believe In the laws of physics, chemistry, aeronautics. As logically if one exists then the other
Can not ! ;) As belief in one counters the other ?
Perhaps it's my background in Magic, but "paranormal" tricks are so easy, and the "ghost hunting" business
Is so big these days. Even after the likes of Houdini, James Randi, Penn & Teller, Criss Angel have exposed
    So many fakes and frauds.
I guess it all comes down to what we "Want" to believe, ignoring facts. Like Higgins refusing to see how
    Good Timothy Dalton was as Bond. :D. Still believe what you wish, if it brings you peace, then no problem. -{
Some believe in fairies, trolls, UFOs ,an old bloke in the clouds with a beard who controls everthing. ( Not
Sir Richard Branson ) :)), phrenology , the hollow earth, the flat earth ........ Take your pick. {[]

It is my belief these things exist within our own brains, you can convince yourself to see an orb if you wish, soldiers suffering from shell shock can hear explosions that dont exist and the brain can convince itself it is seeing something its not, I don't believe in physical apparitions, I do believe my beloved grandfather visited me as a young boy during a time of deep unhappiness and that he was wearing clothes I most associated with him because subconsciously I needed and wanted him, I also experienced sleep walking during this time. To that extent his ghost was something in my own brain.

Doctored your post a bit sniper ...

My Dad is a massive enthusiast of WW2 Aircraft and over the years I have been to many RAF museums and shows ... I know about the 'haunted control tower'

As a kid my Dad freaked me out by telling me the Lincoln at RAF Cosford was haunted then promptly disappeared while I was looking at it and I thought I was on my own in the hangar!!

As for the BIB I totally agree. I'm not sure about ghosts, orbs and such like but I have definitely been in places that have not felt right and I have had an overwhelming desire to leave for no apparent reason. I have an open mind about such things because some things just cannot be explained.

I'm honestly not sure. It's quite easy to toe the 'hard science' line...but ultimately hard science breaks down, thanks to the limitations of our very relatively small minds (hello, origin of the universe/relativity/all of existence once being an infinitesimally small quantum singularity---what was there before that?). I don't dismiss different dimensions, or planes of existence. Energy doesn't go away; it merely changes form.

I wouldn't dispute someone else's testimony; personally I feel it's the sort of thing I'd rather not believe in, it makes life simpler. Like UFOs I suppose. Or conspiracy theories; you never quite get to the root of it, so it's a perpetual tease.

In fact, there might be a useful thesis based on the popularity of belief in ghosts, UFOs, conspiracy theories, in various eras. People talk of UFO abductions now, but I don't think there's any mention of it ever in past centuries pre sci-fi, it's more of religious interventions/miracles and so on.

OK, Exhibit A from You Tube and our very own Yaphet Kotto on the evidence for the existence of ghosts.

    Here is the backstory:

On his first visit to the Greensides farm, Yaphet Kotto. Along with five thousand people witnessed the sun dancing in the sky, spinning and turning and throwing off light in every direction, the owners of the Farm John and Sheila Greensides, as thousands of others believed it was one of the many apparitions that had been taking place on the farm, while Kotto believes what he saw was an unidentified flying object with no religious connotations at all, except when reports came back to Kotto that a woman was on the roof of a nearby church walking back and forth ,he filmed it. Now today faced with a 1995 letter from Archbishop Spence of the Kingston archdiocese in which he says, "It is the wish of the owners of the farm at Marmora that publicity not is given to the farm or its events, and I concur in this judgment." I'm not going to allow myself to be dictated to anymore by religious or church officials, I know what I saw and I standby it, those who say it was a miracle that's cool, I believe it was a UFO over the farm, What that was over the roof of the church? I cant say, I'm not a Catholic, but I'm NOT going to let Archbishop Spence tell me what the hell to do, the government and the church should start coming clean about this kind of phenomenon instead of the constant stream of cover-ups and lies.

There must be thousands of people all out searching for proof of ghosts...with their cameras and infrared meters and suchlike...but not one of them has EVER filmed a ghost - strange that :v

I didn't realise they had drones back in 1995?

Seriously though, why is the footage so short? And something that large and obvious would surely be witnessed by many people? I'm more convinced by ufo reports from pilots both civil and military. They do exist and the raf have given chase to ufos and been outrun while flying a euro fighter.

  • ThunderpussyThunderpussy Behind you !Posts: 63,792MI6 Agent
The was a huge increase in triangular ufo sightings over Europe and the UK, years ago....... then
suddenly up pops the USA Stealth Bomber. So obviously these sightings had been early test flights.
same as Chriscoop points out Drones have been mistaken many times.
I watched a documentary one night showing a spinning ufo over Mexico, all very believable, in broad
daylight...... then it was pointed out that due to it being a time of an eclipse , Mexico city was full of
trained astronomers. None of whom saw a ufo ! :)) they did see the planet venus, in dayligh, and thought
nothing of it. While all the people with phones, thought it was a ufo :D once again showing the differences
between a scientific mind and the paranormal one. ;)

I do believe in ufo's I see them all the time..... Flying objects that I can't identify! But then I'm not a plane spotter. There's a famous one in the UK, dozens of people phoned police from a motorway reporting seeing a huge ufo shooting beams of light down at the cars, the police instantly asked for cctv in the area to search, and they confirmed the reports, panic ensued until the cctv refocused and displayed a large Goodyear zeppelin which was lost at night and was aiming it's powerfully spotlight at the road signs :))
