Listening to BBC radio 4 this morning, I learned that you are not supposed to cut a cross
In the bottom of your Brussels sprouts, as this will make them fill with moisture and too
Soggy ! ......... And everyone hates a Soggy bottom. ;)

We also throw in some Yorkshire puddings to go with our meat. I know they should be served with roast beef but they seem to get served up with everything these days :))

In Germany most people hold the main celebration (including church for some, presents for all) on Christmas Eve (Heiligabend). However, this was not always the case and according to the church it used to be a fast day. Therefore many have a simple meal like sausages and potato salad or carp. Yes, Germans and their sausages. In my family however we break with this tradition and have a different nice meal every year. And then another on Christmas Day. :007)

We celebrate Christmas on the 24th (Christmas Eve) in Norway too. Perhaps it's a Lutheran custom?

It's interesting isn't it, because on the Mediterranean side it's usually 6th January, The Epiphany, that seems to be the main holiday.

What is this "pigs in blankets" everyone keeps going on about? Serving what's in the photos above seems a bit heartless, even for the brutal and savage British.

It's sausages wrapped in bacon. I think it is mostly a British thing.

The the rules of the traditional roast seem to have been thrown out the window ... mint sauce with yorkshires served with pork ... whatever next !!!!

I actually had the pork dinner usually eaten at Christmas in the Oslo region today. Very good, but the sheep rib we prefer on the west coast is even better. I won't touch that until Christmas Eve.

Christmas for me means the usual hotel room with a bottle of vodka and a loaded revolver.

I used to be able to stretch to a hooker too, but as I'm both skint and impotent, it would be a fruitless exercise for both of us.

Mind you, I could drink the bottle of vodka and shoot the hooker...

"Usual hotel room"? They let you back in? :#

Why don't you shoot the vodka and hook the drinker? Just like they do in the S&BS on Mr Fleming's birthday each year?

    Oh YES! Christmas dinner,

In Finland the same as in Germany; the Eve is the main even. Can't be exactly be certain what it's going to be this year, since for my family, the "Clan" comes together in for the celebration and everybody contributes, but there is likely going to be: assortment of herring (home made), cold smoked and cured salmon (prepared by yours truly), assortment of roe, cold cuts of meat (tongue and roast beef by yours truly), potato salad, boiled potatoes, mash, peas, a Christmas Ham and a roast of Moose (M shot by yours truly) fresh home baked bread. We'll top it of with some sweet dessert, which IMHO will be again quite insignificant addition to the feast. Drinks will include assortment of beers, red and white wine, schnapps and cognac and whisky.

Christmas is pretty big in my family...

    I never would have guessed. :)) If it's OK, may I please gate crash the party? I'm sure along with the other 338 guests that will be present no one will notice if I'm there (then again!) ;) And with that drink selection Christmas has well and truly arrived. I promise to be gone within two weeks - as long as I get to take a doggy bag back on the plane with me. -{ -{ -{

Growing up Roma we always had a pasta for Christmas that contained every meat you could find thrown in with whatever shellfish could be found, in a red sauce on pasta. And since it was Christmas we had "the good cheese" to put on top. After that we had a pork lasagna course followed by an "American" meal. So turkey and stuffing. Basically you gain ten pounds at the table. I converted so I no longer have Christmas celebrations. This year I will be cooking at a homeless shelter for dinner. I make killer focaccia.
I've always wanted to have Christmas in Turkey
