I remember drinking lots of Efes and lets just say it had a negative effect on me!

Well you of all people should know that drinking is like dressing oneself; it is all about the occasion. And (at least literary) Bond knows pretty well what to drink and when. You know, beer and schnapps with matjes sandwich. Just saying that Bond "drinks whisky..... is not a beer guy..." is equivalent to RM-Bond traipsing around pretty much everywhere in a suit: Bond puts on a suit, he's not a casual guy!!!.  ajb007/wink

You misquoted me in your reply, and I think you misunderstood my point.

Quite, but be that as it may, I believe that you misunderstood my point. You said, sir, that "Bond is not a beer guy", when in fact he goes on a beer binge in München. He also imbibes in beer in several other occasions. Further more; Ian Fleming states in no uncertain terms that "Bond is not a qourmand". It is an attitude that is also reflected in his use of adult beverages; he even goes as far as stating that (forgive me if this is a touch inaccurate, I don't have my books handy at the moment) Bond dislikes anything in small portions, especially if it tastes bad. Now that is not a sign of a man who is not willing to suffer alcohol just for its intoxicating effect.
Therefore it is inaccurate to state that Bond is not beer guy. He is IMHO a anything goes -guy! I believe that, had IF written a novel in which the story would have taken Bond in to the steppes of Mongolia, we would be now having an argument.... no strike that, that is not quite accurate... a discussion, about whether Bond is a fermented yak milk -guy!  ajb007/lol  ajb007/lol  ajb007/lol

Re: What beer for Bond?

I'm not sure I agree with you there, 0073. A 'beer-guy' imo is someone who prefers beer or habitually drinks beer. The Bond of the novels is essentially a spirits drinker, although he consumes champagne just as much as whisky in its various guises which is his most-consumed spirit. Sure he has had a beer, but it's usually for local colour or when little else is available. But that's different from being a 'beer-guy' in my opinion.  ajb007/cheers

No, he doesn't- he says that Bond is not a gourmet- there's a difference!

Yes, quite right: according to the Cambridge Dictionary: Gourmet: a person who knows a lot about food and cooking, and who enjoys eating high-quality food

Gourmand: a person who enjoys eating large amounts of food.

Exactly; Bond is not a beer-guy, I never said he were, I only said that we should not consider beer as out of his scope. But saying that he is or is not a whisky-guy, a wino (well maybe not a wino) or champagne-guy is over simplification. He will drink, what he finds appropriate for the moment, but it is true that he does prefer hard spirits, when appropriate. And as for beer, he drinks enough of it, that we can safely say that he is a habitual beer consumer, when in the right environments. And that includes SE-England.

Re: What beer for Bond?

I am a tit.

I re-read my posts in this thread, and realized that I come off as a bit(?) of a fundamentalist.  ajb007/rolleyes  ajb007/rolleyes

So let me try to make things a little bit clearer: The OP posted a valid question, "What beer for Bond?". Since it has been established that Bond does indeed drink (an occasional) beer, both in the novels as well as in the movies, it is not an unreasonable question. It is not fair to the OP to just go off and say that "Bond's not a beer guy", and be done with it.

Now that is what riled me in this thread in the first place.

Then I tried to hijack this thread with an off topic tirade on what Bond drinks and whether he's a "beer-guy" (doing my best Al Pacino impression from the "Scent"). And for this I am sorry.

Now, with that cleared up: 1)Bond drinks (occasionally) a beer or two. 2) He is known to favour lagers. 3) We know his taste in beer is definitely "international" as in "not British beer" (Löwenbrau, Miller High Life, Red Stripe etc.). With that in mind; What would be his choices today, I understand if people say Heineken, it is not entirely without merit. It was perfectly cast beer when the setting is considered, much more so than the rare and expensive MaCallan at the beach bar. Cutty Sark from the same parent group would have been a much more appropriate for that scene.

Do you think, that his choice would be always something easy, or would he be willing to try some of the fashionable micro brands with their artesanal offerings.

Cheers.

Ah, thanks CHB- it's known as "heavy" here! "A pint of heavy, please" would be a perfectly normal order.

Agreed. I actually like the scene, because it's a bit of a knock against Budweiser, as soon as the waitress sets it down he smacks a goon's head against the table and spills it. I like to think part of it was out of disgust at the idea of having to drink that swill

Dalton's Bond strikes me as the kind of guy who, if he had to drink beer, would go for something Belgian

I vote for Red Stripe or Miller High-Life.

Bond: "But who would want to kill me, sir?"
M: "Jealous husbands, outraged chefs, humiliated tailors . . . the list is endless."
