I used to feel this way, but that was before I could see where the technology was going. That was at a time when the only hybrid cars available were the ugliest cars on the market, like the people who made hybrid cars thought they had to look ugly. But cars are changing, and electric cars are now able to do what high-performance petrol cars can do. I think today's Bond would appreciate the electric car, as long as he could also keep his DB5. Even Roger Moore drove a hybrid in his personal life.

Re: Bond 25 Vehicles - thoughts, rumours and reports

Aston Martin are making electric supercars, so do other brands. It's time we get rid of the old image of ugly, slow and impractical electric cars.

This is what I got when I searched "Electric supercar" on Google Images:

Re: Bond 25 Vehicles - thoughts, rumours and reports

I guess it’s about more than looks for me. I like the sound of a real engine; the vibration of a good exhaust. Even the smell can be evocative. At least with a hybrid I suppose you can have your foot in both worlds.

Fleming’s Bond drove what was a vintage car even at the time, and he worked on it himself. While I could see Moore’s Bond or Brosnan’s Bond going all in on electric, I don’t think it would be a deliberate choice of the others.

Re: Bond 25 Vehicles - thoughts, rumours and reports

I completely understand what you aere saying, and there is something about the sound and feel of a non-eletric car.
It's much more than the looks for me too. Some electric cars perform superbly, and performance is important to Bond. The movie Bond has always been on the forefront of technology. We must remember Fleming lived in a time when Electric cars were fifty year old granma Duck cars and it was acceptable to use the N-word about people. The world around Bond must change, but the essence of Bond must remain, I don't think poluting cars is a part of who Bond is at the core.

Someone somewhere suggested a joke wher eBond was given the electric Aston Martin, totals it as he often does with his cars and returns to Q with the charging cable. I would like to see that  ajb007/lol

I would welcome an electric car chase. Electric cars are the future, and Bond needs to be ahead of the game. And I think it could add a touch of needed humour to the Bond films.

Ahhh noooo.... the humor in the SPECTRE car chase was more than bad enough thanks.  What a terrible suggestion  ajb007/insane

I'm all for electric cars and would own one myself in a heartbeat, but please... no silly, done for laughs, quiet chase in DC's last Bond.

Re: Bond 25 Vehicles - thoughts, rumours and reports

There is this new thing in movies where they play cool music during some scenes, including car chases. Might work in Bond25 too  ajb007/biggrin

Would make a great " stealth " mode, for Bond during a
Night chase,( Bond using the nightfinder goggles  and
No lights )

I've seen photos of cars where you can see the results on the windscreen. That would be perfect for Bond  ajb007/bond

I think those systems only work with the cars

Re: Bond 25 Vehicles - thoughts, rumours and reports

My car has had one for a few years and you can buy one on Amazon - not sure it's real Q stuff anymore...

Re: Bond 25 Vehicles - thoughts, rumours and reports

If it doesn't require having the headlights on, other information can be shown on the windscreen (radar, facial recognition etc.) and perhaps directional microphones to help with the surveilance, it will be worthy of Q Branch.

Re: Bond 25 Vehicles - thoughts, rumours and reports

Bond shouldn't drive electric because he wants to become an eco-warrior, he should do it becase of the performance of the electric Aston Martin. If he uses the silent motor to run surveilance it's nice bonus. Comparing Bond driving electric car to drinking non-alcoholic drinks isn't a good one, in my opinion. Bond is known as a heavy drinker, he's known for it. It's a part of his persona that shouldn't change. Few, if anyone, would describe Bond persona as someone who insists on emiting CO2. Bond uses the best  and most stylish cars, he doesn't care much if they emit CO2 or not.

I have to agree. If the horsepower and torque is there, I have no problem with Bond driving electric. Despite Bond's many callback to the past, he has always been one step ahead with technology. Non-alcoholic wine doesn't do the same thing that the real stuff would. A high-performance electric car can achieve the same goals as a petrol car.

Re: Bond 25 Vehicles - thoughts, rumours and reports

Exactly

Re: Bond 25 Vehicles - thoughts, rumours and reports

A Tesla Model S can go from 0 to 60 in 2.27 seconds, an Aston Martin Vanquish 3.4 seconds, and the Spectre DB10 in just under 4 seconds.

It'll be fine.

Re: Bond 25 Vehicles - thoughts, rumours and reports

Well it's to be hoped he doesn't have to tail someone like goldfinger, or make a quick dash to Rome like in Spectre, with a range of around 300—350 miles and a 7 hour charge time he will need a bit more time for his missions. On the plus side next time he decides to make a phone call during a high speed chase it will be much quieter.

Re: Bond 25 Vehicles - thoughts, rumours and reports

For me, it’s not all about horsepower and torque. There’s more at play. There’s just something visceral about the growl of a real engine and an electric car just can’t do that. A quartz Omega is actually more accurate than an Omega master co-axial. A Walther PPS is a superior concealed carry weapon compared to a Walther PPK. It’s not just about “achieving the same goals.” Some things can’t be quantified.

Re: Bond 25 Vehicles - thoughts, rumours and reports

The main drawbacks to electric cars right now are the range and the charging time (and running over people while driving through carparks because they can't hear you coming). Both will hopefully get better, although mobile phone and laptop manufacturers haven't put much effort into improving battery life, so we'll see. Anything's possible in a Bond film, so we might see Bond driving an electric car with a 1,000 mile range, reach speeds of 200 mph, and which can fully re-charge in 30 seconds from a memory stick. As others have said, I'd still miss the roar of the engine though. And no, I don't want a fake engine sound like the fake camera-sound that some digital cameras and mobile phone cameras have now.
