So what do we think of the extension? Calls of revoking seem to be getting louder, French President Macron seemingley at odds with Germany, Czech prime minister admits UK leaving is very bad for the EU and a compromise 6 months agreed.

I have to say that I do really enjoy watching the Moggfather in action when he's debating things in Parliament - especially his recent mini-spat with the drunk Anna Soubry. His use of latin on occasions certainly makes me chuckle.

I like him, he's an extremely intelligent politician, while I don't share many of his ideals, he always comes accross well, never flustered, well researched and very statesman like, if people could get away from his background and wealth they may admit more politicians should be like this aswell as standing by there principles. You should watch the link I put up with him slowly taking Verhofstadt apart piece by piece. Here it is again just for entertainment purposes

I certainly couldn't envisage many people beating him in a debate!

It's almost as if they (our lot) are carrying on along the lines of 'if we keep delaying long enough, the public will forget all about eventually' ... it's pathetic & shameful tbh. I will tip my hat (slightly) to the EU, as throughout this balls up from our political powers, they have played their cards extremely well & in a fairly dignified manner - aside from Tusk's stupid comment a few weeks back.

It would be great to think that this extension - fittingly enough ending on Hallowe’en - would be sufficient for all parties to reach an agreement on how we want the exit to look. I just can’t see it happening though. If they haven’t reached a consensus with the benefit of a pressing deadline, I don’t think this lengthy extension will help.

Reading this thread has been incredibly interesting. Democracy means different things to different people. I’d love us to remain in the EU but I’m resigned to us leaving. However IMHO leaving with any sort of deal with one of our most important trading partners is preferable to leaving without one. To try and negotiate a deal after we’ve left on bad terms will inevitably mean a worse deal for the UK.

I saw a couple of people from the EU on the news and they said that Theresa May was not up to the job of taking the UK out of the EU. I think this admission was the first time any one from the EU has said this? It is true of course. She has been a disaster for the UK and it seems to me that she is interested mostly in staying in power.

I ask this, there is now much talk about replacing her. How is this possible?

I know it does not alter the numbers in parliament but a change of persons for the overwhelmed to someone who can cope would surely be in the interest of the UK and even the EU. I don't think even the EU believes anything she says any more.

As I see it May completely lost when she stupidly held the election and lost all her majority. The fate was sealed for Brexit then.

If May stays then this new deadline will be extended to 2020, and extended after that forever.

The fun will begin when all the new UKIP and Brexit party MEPs arrive in Brussels to begin their campaign of dissent!

Democracy does indeed mean different things to different people. For some it means accepting the result of a free vote what ever our personal opinion. For others it means only accepting the result of a free vote if it goes along with their personal opinion.

What is most interesting for me is how this discussion has exposed the true attitude of the people who are in it. Mostly good, some bad, the very small minority disturbing (within the context of political debate any way).

I think this short description sums it up:

    http://www.democracy-building.info/definition-democracy.html

It is also interesting to watch the pattern of the debate. This also tells much about the people in it.

Watching Newsnight last night, ( as I'm an intellectual :D ) and they pointed out that
after the elections the EU parliament will look very different, as not only is it getting a
coat of paint, but at least 33% of new MEPs will be from populist parties, many who
also wish to leave :)) ..... so more fun times ahead for everyone.

For Pm May to be replaced a few things could happen to make this possible ,
Either she resigns and the conservatives will vote on who of the candidates they want as their leader and new pm.
The Conservatives put forward enough letters declaring they want a new leader to the 1922 commitee who then instigate a leadership battle which is again voted on by the conservatives.
    Or
A motion of no confidence in passed in the house of commons in the government which then would spark a general election and a Conservative leadership vote.

Ah yes, there is a sense from the EU to calm things down and get things done, before May finally has to give way and they then might have to deal with a hard line brexit PM.

    Nice attitude.

EU was very patient and supportive to help to get Brexit over the line and now we have to deal with populists that have no gratitude in return.
But that‘s democracy and we have to deal with it.

Wasn’t she promising to resign after her deal has been confirmed, or was that promise only limited to the third vote?

I think she actually stated that she would resign after a withdrawal agreement was passed and before further negotiations.

I have little doubt that the EU is simply importing British troubles and setting them loose in the EU parliament. It is in the interest of some British politicians and many from the UKIP style parties to cause as much disruption as they are able. In real terms they perhaps might not have any influence, but to shout and make trouble will they think show the British voters that they (UKIP etc) are on the side of the people. Perhaps they also think that the EU will cut the extension if enough trouble is caused?

I do not know how the EU will react if disruption like this is being seen to be made.

Chriscoop. I think only one of the options you mention is available? That is for May to resign? The Tories will never vote for a election surely? And May cannot be removed by votes from the 1922 committee until December?

The UK is tired of her, I think the EU is also tired of her and nobody trusts any promises she makes and with good reason on both sides.

Quite right, the last vote of no confidence was defeated, which will happen again as the tories would rally around and do anything to prevent Corbyn taking power.
She can't be taken down by the tories either as you say, she won a vote last December and party rules don't allow another for 12 months. They can hold an informal vote which wouldn't remove her but if enough voted informally against her it would be very difficult to see her survive.

    b) Wasn't a Bond film supposed to be filming by now?

I do not know much about the situation in Sudan, but it appears that the revolution has been peaceful up to now.

The General who is in charge has the biggest beret badge I have ever seen! He also seems to be speaking to the people from the big brother diary room!

I hope so too. Peaceful handover of power to an elected gevernment is the best kind. I hope this happens soon.
  • JoshuaJoshua Posts: 1,138MI6 Agent
It is indeed a rarity to see a peaceful transition of power in an African state. I must read about the situation in Sudan but from what little I know I believe the 'revolution' was led by the civilian population without violence or bloodshed.
If this can be maintained then it is proof that not all handovers of regimes anywhere in the world need to be violent.

Not really hard facts, is it? If the article had said Theresa May has fought really hard in the negatiations for the best possible terms for Brexit and is a strong beliver in Brexit citing the same type of sources, would you've belived the article?
