Today my father and I cleared a road of the 1830's for branches and small trees using cutters. Actually the first hundres yards or so were improved as a "new deal" project during the 1930's, but the rest of the road is about 180-190 years old. My family clears the road each year. My dad walked, skiied and ….. sledged (?) on that road to school when he was a boy, but a new road came in the 1960's. No-one else lifts a finger to preserve it, but we enjoy doing this

Thanks for that, Barbel. I'm no authority on Elvis! I do have a book somewhere on his later years though, which was from around that time and had a lot of pictures. I recall someone saying on the TV years ago that Elvis sounded like an opera singer at times towards the end, due to his increased weight.

Well, I'd dispute that his extra weight affected his voice as much as
(a) his drug use (there is a clear change in his voice around 1971- while he's still good thereafter, his voice is never as wonderful as it was before although it does have its moments)
(b) natural ageing, which does affect the singing voice though not always for the worst (Sinatra sounded a damn sight better in his forties than his twenties, for example)
A lot of this has to do with his choice of material. Elvis did sing his early songs (All Shook Up, Jailhouse Rock, etc) right up to the end but gave them short shrift by singing very short speeded-up versions while giving more emphasis to big ballads (such as "Hurt" or "Unchained Melody") which naturally involved more high notes and dramatic singing. It all comes down to taste, really. Many enjoy the "big" songs (his version of "My Way" was a posthumous hit), some feel it was a waste of his talent.
As to "opera"- Elvis was a high baritone who could hit Gs and As (even Bs occasionally) in full voice with little effort (and in falsetto reach E) but more importantly his tone could suggest tenor or bass according to the song while conveying the emotional aspects of the lyrics to the listener in an almost unequalled fashion. If in an alternative universe he had been an opera singer then he would have been a baritone- though he would have dearly loved to have been a bass!
I‘ve never been a fan of L. Hamilton but great gesture to get Vettel to the Nr. 1 podium and absolute p!ss poor show by Sebastian Vettel.

There are literally thousands of beauty pageants here in the Philippines, every city, town or village seems to have one as part of the local festivals which adorn the calendar.
The major pageants are televised to massive audiences. I remember the Miss United Kingdom and Miss World pageants being a huge audience winner for the BBC until the left wingers took over and banned the broadcasting of these events. Over in the Eastern countries they are still hugely popular on TV with huge ratings.
Are beauty pageants still televised in Europe and America?
Do you miss them in those countries where they are banned?

Last night I watched Tomorrow Never Dies on TV. I must say that I was disappointed by the fight scenes. Bond looked slow to react and overall the scenes seemed lame. When I look at the same in OHMSS and indeed other films I believe this may have something to do with editing?
Also, just for my own information, one small point. In German airports, are English language newspapers available, or was the Tomorrow newspaper just there for the benefit of the audience so they could read the headline?
On an unrelated topic...... Last night with thunder storms we had to keep the
Hound in the house, which got me to thinking ( I don't do it very often ).
Do wolves etc get frightened by thunder and run away from their pack ?
