Re: In Italy and Greece this Summer - 007 Shooting Locations?

We're very satisfied with the compensation.  We almost got a free cruise with the credit that they gave us.
And yeah, the ship was full.  Moving us was not an option.

We didn't make it to Korfu.  That was not on our itinerary, but I'd like to go there if we make a standalone trip to Greece in the future.  I hope to do so, as I honestly loved Mykonos more than I probably should.

Not sure on the Venini shop in Venice, sorry.  We kinda used Venice as our 'rest and recharge' city, enjoying the ambiance rather than the crowds in the touristy areas.  Our hotel was on Giudecca, and we ended up hanging out there quite a bit and simply enjoying being in Italy with the great view and food.

Re: In Italy and Greece this Summer - 007 Shooting Locations?

Not to critizise you in any way, Gymkata, but of the cruise ship industry is somethimes problematic.
I think the cruise ship traffic in many places has to be scaled down. A few years ago I worked with a woman who lives in a village/town that's often visited by cruise ships. "For six months every year the view from my house is the side of a cruise ship." she told me. The Geiranger fjord, probably the most popular cruise ship destination in Norway, had the same level of air polution as the largest cities in the country. Thankfully some things are being done to make the air there better. People who live in the old town in Stavanger have people peering through their windows and even walking into their houses when the cruise ships visit. They belive it's some kind of museum and not a community people actually live in.

I'm sure many typical cruise ship destinations, espesially in the Mediteranian have problems like that too. I think a part of the solution is cruise ship destinations like Geiranger and Venezia investing in smaller electrical boats with large viewing decks, like this one:

The cruise ships can anchor a fair distance from the destination and passengers can be ferried on the smaller electirical boats to where they want to go. The cruise ships are hooked up on electrical cables from the shore. The locals and the tourists get quiet, non-polluting boats that aren't floating hotels at the destination. The number of visitors from the cruise ships in one wave can also be avoided.

Since cruise ship pasengers often eat and sleep onboard, they also often spend less money where they visit. I think some sort of tax on the visiting ships will happen in the future. That money can be spent on electrical ferries, electrical cables to the ships, restoring old buildings, building roads and viewing points, public toilets and other infrastructure.

Re: In Italy and Greece this Summer - 007 Shooting Locations?

Oh, I totally get the criticism.  While I've taken a few cruises and enjoyed them, I much prefer to go to a location and spend a lot of time there (like we did in Italy).  Also, I personally witnessed the population of a city quadruple with the cruise ships in port...in Mykonos, we were one of 4 cruise ships that day, and the place was absolutely crazy.  If I lived there, I'd be incredibly frustrated.

Regarding spending, I'm not sure if I agree with you.  Speaking personally, we hardly spent anything on the ship and instead spent all of our money in the various ports.  Actually, 'we' is maybe the wrong word here...'my wife' would be more accurate; she went nuts on jewelry in several of the ports.  Near as I could tell, most of the cruisers on our ship also went a bit crazy with their spending in the ports of call.

Re: In Italy and Greece this Summer - 007 Shooting Locations?

You could be right, but we do know they rarely book into local hotels.

Re: In Italy and Greece this Summer - 007 Shooting Locations?

Why would they?  they're in town for maybe 8 hours, just enough time to do an excursion, do some shopping, and sit at a bar and complain about how crowded the city is.

There's no reason for them to do so, but it's not good for the local hotel industry.

Re: In Italy and Greece this Summer - 007 Shooting Locations?

My apologies, but I'm not seeing a cause and effect here.  Cruise ships are floating hotels.  Sure, they can swell the population of a city for a few hours, but I don't see how their presence can have any sort of effect on the local hotels, good or bad.  Those hotels will cater to travelers (business or pleasure) regardless of whether or not a cruise ship of two is parked in the port.

Re: In Italy and Greece this Summer - 007 Shooting Locations?

If a tourist wants to visit a landlocked destination (let's say Paris) for more than one day, he most likely will have to book into a hotel.
It can be argued that hotels in these cruise harbours don't get many of those guests because they sleep on the ships. If no cruise ships were allowed or able to visit Venezia or Geiranger, most likely more hotels would get more visitors.

Re: In Italy and Greece this Summer - 007 Shooting Locations?

I just read in a newpaper that Italy has decided not to allow cruise ships in Venezia.

It sounds like you're suggesting that cruise ships somehow prevent regular tourists from visiting these cities and therefore prevent hotels from being booked.  Is there any data to back that up, because...at least to me...there's no cause and effect.  Tourists are going to come to these cities regardless of whether or not a cruise ship or two is in town.

And yeah, I heard that about cruise ships being prevented from docking at Venice in the future.  I'm glad that I was able to do the cruise when I did!

No; I'm not saying htey prevent any other tourists from going there. I'm saying if the cruise sips tourists used other types of travel they wouldin many cases use hotles in or near the destination.

Well yeah.  That goes without saying, doesn't it?  Sorry, I thought you were suggesting that cruise ships somehow prevented hotels from being used/booked.

I'm glad you enjpoyed your holliday, I really am. I'm just saying the industry must be scaled down and changed for the benenfit of the tourist destinations, the envirorment and the toursits themselves. Hopefully the recent decision by the Italian government is a step in the right direction.

I'm torn on this, mainly because a lot of these countries really rely on tourist dollars for their economy.  I know my wife and I spent a lot (more than we should have) in both Italy and Greece on jewelry and such.

If the destinations  get the income from harbour taxes they might get more money from fewer visits from cruise ships.
