Thunderball DPV - Replica

Another one on the bench (as such) i've started working on, i can't resist the scuba stuff...

underwater-propulsion-thunder.jpg

Its going to be mainly constructed from fibreglass (as its easier to shape than aluminium..) also i will be able to cast more at a later date for possible interested fellows??
Its actually larger than you may think, the original must have weighed a ton out of the water..

it may take a while along with everything else i've started, and life, kids, work etc all getting in the way... :))
enjoy

    WOW ... that looks amazing -{
Will it have a working motor to drive the propeller?

    Hi Ed
Thanks for your email the stills will be really helpful again. Cheers

The plan is to eventually have all the elements you see on screen working, front light, working prop even air in the tanks to propel the side bang sticks, maybe.... Obviously not Real bang sticks as that would be illegal in the UK...

I have already source the correct car lamps used as they turn out to be the same ones used in the tow sleds by spectre.

It's a shame that one of the production models hasn't survived somewhere, as I think at least two maybe even three were made, as they have subtle differences, but that makes the project even better.

I have been making some progress during the lock down in between still working (thankfully!!). I think this is definitely going to be a long term project overall, but enjoying every minute,

Cutting & shaping the front 12v sealed lamp

    IMG-20190717-213148.jpg

Now sealed back to help with the mold making and casting process.
    IMG-20200328-173219.jpg

Now this is where i changed my mind a little, after closer inspection of stills and screen shots (thanks again Ed). I thought the rear prop shaft bearing housing was in a conical shape, but it appears to be more tightly curved, so here we go again.... more filling and sanding and filling and sanding......

Now a few coats of filler primer and ready for waxing and mold making,

    thanks for looking, STAY SAFE!

I've also started on forming the rear prop.
Making things with the kids while they're currently off school with popsicle (or lolly sticks, in the UK) some models, it suddenly dawned on me that these might be a fantastic tool for possibly building the spiral curves for the blades. After making a few fans, wind chimes / spirals..... I spaced the sticks at different intervals and came up with roughly the correct blade pitch.

    Hi all,

    Further process being made:

Printed a central hub for the blades to be attached too:
    IMG-20200507-101927.jpg

and cut out the blade shapes
    IMG-20200517-102256.jpg

Tried to align the two lolly stick cutout blades to each side, but found they were slightly inconsistent pitches, so went with one, sanded, primed and moulded, then cast a half to bond together. Save wastage, use all the last bits of silicone (as it sticks to itself)
    IMG-20200517-100008.jpg

    IMG-20200517-100148.jpg

    IMG-20200517-101548.jpg

    IMG-20200517-101627.jpg

    Bonded, primed and sanded AGAIN...
    IMG-20200517-141403.jpg

    IMG-20200519-202844.jpg

Form silicone mould and cast, interesting shape, and cut up loads of chunks of 'redundant' silicone moulds and threw in to bulk out and save on new silicone. Try it, it really works.... saved a 1/3 of new silicone!!
    IMG-20200528-021821.jpg

    IMG-20200528-153521.jpg

Really pleased with how the mould came out and in an economic way.

Casting first pour, came out well.

Is the lamp just a standard Lucas headlamp? I always took it to be although I never really closely.

Prepping the plug for moulding... Front half first

    3 Part fibre glass mould

    IMG-20200710-213059.jpg

    IMG-20200710-214755.jpg

Formed pretty well, a bit more time on the mould release on the plug next time, as it stuck a little but happy with the quality of the mould

    IMG-20200822-131731.jpg

First pull out of the mould pretty good too, nice flat white. A bit of clean up and starting to take shape

    What a project!
Sorry for tuning in so late, and you really have great attention to detail.
Hope you can do a re-enactment scene in Q's hut, and turn the lamp switch on and off several times.
    Would be great fun!
Cheers, and good luck with the project,
    Tom
