Best movies of 2019

This year I've seen fewer movies at the cinema than any year since I got my driver's license. The reason is repairs in a couple of tunnels every night most of the year. Hopefully other members have been able to visit the cinema more often so we can discuss the best movies released this year. I can only think of two movies I saw that qualify:

- Once upon a time in Hollywood

- The Favourite

I need to watch "Knives out" and "The Irishman", there's no doubt about it.

I enjoyed Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, kept me interested right to the end, with some solid music and one very violent action scene.
1917 was visually stunning, though Thomas Newman plagarised a bit from his Bond Soundtrack. Great war film though.
Little Women was very well done, it will probably be known as the definitive film version of the story. Nice change of pace from a lot of the other films.
Jojo Rabbit was quality film, with a terrific tone and a well done message (which wasn't overly preachy). Though i think some people overseas didn't quite take to the Kiwi sense of humour.
Toy Story 4 and Endgame were a good time.

Regarding JOJO RABBIT: I'm in the US and everyone that I know of who has seen the film absolutely loved it. Also, THOR: RAGNAROK and WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS are both highly regarded over here, so Taika's sense of humor is translating just fine for us yanks (at least where I live...)

That's great to hear! I must be mistaken then. If you enjoyed Ragnarok and what we do in the shadows, you might like Hunt for the Wilderpeople

I didn't see very many 2019 films in the cinema, which is pretty typical for me in general. But all of the films that I did see ranged from pretty good to excellent. The top ones for me were:

1917 - I loved all aspects of it. The recreation of the WWI battlefields, the seamless long take cinematography, and the acting. I also enjoyed some of the more surreal moments, particularly the night scene with the flares. Newman's music was great in this sequence. James Suzuki mentioned Newman borrowing from his Bond soundtracks, he also quite blatantly borrowed from Zimmer's Thin Red Line score in one section (Sixteen Hundred Men on the soundtrack album).

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - I (almost) always enjoy Tarantino films, and I think this one is a pretty strong entry in his filmography. I enjoyed the relaxed pacing of it, it creates a sense of time and place very well and I think the performances were really good. I'm looking forward to rewatching this one at home in the near future.

Knives Out - A big, pleasant surprise for me. I saw a trailer for this a few months before it was in theatres and admittedly I didn't get particularly excited about it. But it turned out to be a really enjoyable slice of old fashioned mystery storytelling, with strong performances and an entertaining, quirky atmosphere.

There are still quite a few 2019 films on my 'to watch' list, most notably Ford vs Ferrari, The Irishman and Jojo Rabbit.
