FE SPECTRE Mask

FE Speccy mask arrived today. Damaged box, not a good start.

But apart from that, and I have to hold back somewhat as we all predicted this. It’s HUUUUGE. At least 25% bigger than the screen used mask, and that’s not even taking into account that it’s made from thicker material. The screen used one I had the opportunity to look at and try on, was quite tight on me. Which came as a surprise as I thought DC was much bigger as I have quite a slim head, although he does take the same glasses size as me and the wear the same on us both. But this is something else. I wasn’t expecting it to be Uber accurate as FE have never done that, despite claims in the spiel. But this one is hilariously huge, I can fit my fist in between my head and the side it’s that big. The details and dimensions are off all over, and it’s so heavy that even if you do have a head the size of a small moon, then not even the extra strapping they have put on, will hold it on for long.

53EFE530-9272-4097-B7F9-BE1AF9FD2363_zpsrgsl00at.jpeg

I look like the Phantom of The Opera in this it’s so big.

0C0B806B-9CDA-4AD0-9C09-D19372FB6718_zps9wcm5xww.jpeg

And this is a picture with the screen accurate sized hat on. Well, it doesn’t fit on, it just kinda sits hilariously on top like a mini topper on a bobble head. As you can see, there is a huge amount of daylight each side of this. Big enough to stick both hands in each side.

68A6B488-FF99-4110-AEAC-D164F16F7A1D_zps7fgylki6.jpeg

The booklet that comes with it is sparse, and it tickled me as it shows the screen used mask being measured with callipers. They must have just done that for show, as the dimensions don’t translate to anything like the mask it’s supposed to represent. And this is what annoys, the claims of accuracy, of being moulded direct off the screen used one. If this is the case, why is is enormously off, not just a bit off, but massively, stonkingly off. Oh and the hinged jaw isn’t right either, and it’s too loose. So just forward like an apes constantly.

Poor show, stop taking us for gullible fools. That’s the most annoying part. If it was sold as an idealised version for display, then fair enough, but banging on how accurate stuff is, when it’s clearly not is an insult to your customer base.

Back it goes.......

I’ve just tried to put it on the stand to see if it’s any good on display with no head inside to make it look too big. Loads of issues.

The jaw fixing design, as mentioned is nothing like the screen mask, it is held by two pieces of flimsy elastic which don’t hold it in position at all, and it just slips over the front teeth in a massive under bite. It has two lugs on the jaw which are supposed to lock into two corresponding holes the main mask, but they don’t line up and there is a good 20mm gap, so even if they did, it still won’t work. Therefore, when you place it on the stand, the jaw just loosely moves to one side or over the top jaw which gives it an ape like look. With the shape being too wide by far for a human skull, this just adds to the ape like look. Far removed again, from the iconic svelt and slim design of the original.

So in short, it doesn’t even work well as a display piece. And the stand is so poorly designed, the mask is easily knocked off and will break if dropped from any distance onto a hard surface due to the weight and hardness of the material they used.

    It’s HUUUUUGE.

.....sorry, but I can’t get over that. It’s HUUUUUUGE!!!!!!

If anyone is familiar with how big great helms are, then this will really show the bloated scale of the mask. It is bigger, and great helms are humongous. :))

    76E835B3-32B0-4519-80A7-8D4B944AD80F_zpspfrqlqmy.jpeg

And try as I might, when resting on the stand, I can’t completely get rid of that under bite. I can reduce it slightly.

    8B1FE1B5-9307-453F-8357-5CDECDE9A9DD_zpsvfacab9c.jpeg

Now the good news is, you can get rid of this effect, but it means permanently gluing the jaw into position. In all honesty, that makes no difference to the form, fit and function as a mask, and it will improve the appearance immensely. But we shouldn’t have to.

Makes you wonder why/how Eon approve it? :o

It MUST damage the brand by keep selling poor ‘replicas’?

There are FAR better prop makers selling their items on here {[]

My guess is that these inaccuracies are enforced by the grantees of said licence. You have to deliberately go out of your way to make things as inaccurate as this and other things presented to us over the years. Whether it’s to protect the original design, or to stop fakes being passed off as one of the original props? I just don’t know. But either way, they should stop bandying around misleading phrases, such as ‘accurate to the original, or ‘exact reproduction’. This is what annoys me and other people as it’s those phrases that attracts me to a product, and then makes the disappointment magnified tenfold when I find out they are not.

I couldn’t agree more - especially at the price point of these…I mean, if you save up your money for these expecting an ‘accurate replica’ then you are going to be immensely disappointed and understandably pi$$ed off X-(

    I think if any AJBers had any doubts about just how crap this licensed replica is? The image of the mask with the Jaxon and James Victorian top hat should 110% remove those doubts. The Bond collecting community’s sincere thanks to ASP for alerting us to this complete abortion -{

Ok breaking cover, it’s been a year since my last post and was hoping to make it a a special one to mark my 2000th post, however Snake Boy’s post has pissed me off. I echo what everybody else has said about FE promising a screen accurate reproduction prop and then delivering a lemon. I would like to see a response from Barry at FE.

I believe there maybe a solution though. If FE are to be believed then the original prop was 3D scanned and then the moulds produced. It would be very easy to increase the size of the scan before 3D printing it to turn into a mould to get this oversize monstrosity. All we need is for someone with access to the hardware to rescan the repro, take the size down accordingly and print it again, probably using SLA printing to achieve the smooth finish and then make the files available though Shapeways or another company. As the fan produced prop would not be the same size as the FE one then the copyright issues shouldn’t arise and it could be argued that it was sculpted from scratch. Before anybody says the cat is out of the bag, this post may solicit a response from FE.

    It’s good to be back.

I had already looked into it. Even though my order status has been "Pending Shipment" for the last week, it also says:

Same here. I emailed them and with no reason given they were able to cancel it. Sucks to be out the initial deposit, but it would've sucked more to have spent ALL the money and been very unhappy. Pity. It would've looked great next to my Spectre IMAX poster, but I guess I can use the money on a NTTD tie or other piece of clothing!

I wasn’t on the wait list but definitely intended on picking one of these up at some point down the line. Now, not going to happen. I remember the QA issues with the Golden Gun back in the day and gave that a miss, though I’m now regretting that decision somewhat...

Can anyone recommend one of the cheaper knock offs one sees on e-bay as a better alternative ? Presumably they will be more to scale, ie not elephant man sized head dimensions?

Had a few people ask me about the images missing in this thread. Don’t worry, its nothing sinister. Photobucket are having problems. They’ll be back up as soon as they sort their problem.
I have had a full refund since, so I’m happy at least.

Interesting to see that no response has been given by Barry, i preordered these and have requested my pre order is cancelled due to it not being what it said on the tin, my email was being passed over to the owner who i pressume is Barry on the 17th December and im yet to hear anything back, i certainly wont be ordering anything from them again. Great video! The mask does seem larger than the movie version.

Wasn't this supposed to be cast directly from the prop?
