With Trump in the White House there is no City on the Hill anymore, no role for the USA as a beason of hope and security in the world.
I can understand it if a country has a company that has found the vaccine will first use that medicine on the citizens who need saving first and only alter distribute abroad. Sharing the formula would be the right thin g to do. Trying to buy up a foreign Company to only help the USA is the wrong thing to do. The US are losing their moral leadership in the world (as so far a superpower can have such a thing). Sorry about the politics, but it's highlly relevant.

On a ligher note, there was just a report from Italy or Spain, where social distancing is enforced high.
They interviewed 2 women who told them that their 5 month old Labrador suffers the most from it because he can‘t hug and cuddle with random bypassers anymore :x

King Harald held a good speech to the nation about the Corona situation tonight. The king usually only addresses the whole nation on New years eve. In fact the last time he made an exception was after the terror attacks in 2011.
BUT: the king spoke from the royal cabin. He in a quarantine after his visit to Jordan at the start of the month. It's now illegal to live in your cabin because the small municipalities where many of the cabins are don't have the medical infrastructure to handle thousands of extra people. So the king is breaking the law :))

I am just reading that the UK has only 4000 intensive beds nationwide.

In comparison Germany has 20000 and we are very worried that the capacity win‘t be enough, this the drastic measures over the weekend.

My country did a announcement today for Coronavirus

Basically do nothing - no closure of boarders (flights from South America and UK) etc. people appear to be a bit pissed off. Easy to isolate here in Falklands if you venture out i to the wilderness but will spread like wildfire in Stanley if or rather when it arrives. 3500 people - 2 supermarkets, 2 schools etc

Norway has a maximum of 1400 intensive care beds, so 4000 seems insufficient when we know there are 5.3 million Norwegians and 61 million Brittons.

The annual government conferance has started, but this time it according to anti-Corona measures. Everyone is sitting at least one meter away from other people. It's a reminder that even if you're not too impressed by their performance they have key functions in making decisions that has to be made.

Re the whole care home thing.

I'd urge everyone to get Lasting Power of Attorney for their parents, in both finance and health and welfare. They have to grant it to you and be in a position mentally to do that. Without it, the State basically owns your parent and is the decision maker for their care. The State profits from your parent's death and I cannot put it any blunter than that. It saves money in pensions, prescriptions and all round adult social care.
Trust me, I know and I found out the hard way.
Care homes like to bar relatives anyway who assert themselves over their parent's care, but now have a ready excuse to do so. Until now the main way of killing off the elderly is via covert dehydration - the family is not informed and just assumes that it was 'their time'. This is done with the complicity of the corrupt local authority - such as Surrey, for instance.
The coronavirus outbreak knocks all such sly endeavours into a cocked hat. It's going to be wipeout. Hospitals can't cope - the NHS has been deliberately run down over a decade of Tory austerity, to allow the private sector to 'helpfully' step up to the plate.
The Govt won't get the blame as coronavirus is not directly their fault.
Get LPA while you still can. Without it, you can't even look at your parent's medical notes. With it, you just might be able to get them home 'to die' but trust me, if they're at home they're more likely to live if you are caring for them. But otherwise, and even with LPA, the corrupt Social Services can stop that from happening.
I am not kidding. My late mother was in seven care homes over six years and it took a long time for me to figure out what was going on. She had Parkinson's - an example of the 'underlying condition' which allows them to kill off the elderly and attribute it to that at the inquest.

I know a few people on this board, who will happily (and incorrectly) blame the EU for this.

This aside, I entirely agree with your previous post.

A good friend of mine (french, even more stubborn than myself) just returned from a 1 week vacation trip to the US.
Everything went well - he returned on Sunday.

Prior to his trip, we‘ve had long discussions if he should go or not.
Not only once I‘ve told him not to fly because of the risk of being stranded.

Exactly this has happened in the last days and the german government is now putting 50 million Euros on the table to bring stranded tourists back home.

What I want to say is, you went on a trip less than 10 days ago, you knew what could happen and you took the risk. And now us taxpayers must bail you out.

CureVac are very much advanced in developing a vaccine.

    The emphasis is on „exclusive“

    Update:

CureVac will not be sold and stays in Germany.
Main owners are Dietmar Hopp and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

CureVac announced, that they are not working exclusively for anyone, their goal is to cure on a global level and not on a national level.

Dietmar Hopp is often criticized in Germany as the owner of the football Club Hoffenheim, the accusation is that he created a retord Club which is based only in money.

Hopp remains one of Germany‘s largest donors for charity, sports and disease control.
Hopp is the co-founder of SAP.

    Just a short update:

Richard Grenell, the US ambassador has disputed that the story is true

CureVac issued a statement yesterday, that they „have not been officially approached by the US“

The main CureVac stakeholder, Dietmar Hopp, has confirmed that this offer was on the table from the US and that CureVac will not work exclusively for a region or nation

Foreign Secretary Heiko Maas made a statement on monday saying "German scientists have a leading role in the developments for meds and vaccines, in global cooperations. We cannot accept, that others are trying to acquire these achievements exclusively“

I feel bad about all the posts about the US on this thread, but I just watched Dr Fauci (the top US official on infectious deseases) say the system isn't geared to handle the crisis the way many other nations are. I would really like to know why. Is it because the country doesn't have a public healthcare system or some other reason?

I have relatives that have just returned from their annual winter 3 month holiday in Florida. They managed to get on one of the last BA flights out of the country. Apparently, people are still just going about their normal business. Restaurants open and busy, supermarkets trading as usual with plenty of toilet rolls on the shelves. Is this true in other parts of the country? By the sounds of it, I don't think the average US citizen is yet aware of what is going to hit them in the next few weeks... :#

I posted in another thread and it sort of snowballed a little bit. My bad. Here is what you may Call a summary of what was written there:

I'm watching Being James Bond's "Theraphy Session". He wonders why there is so much fuss about Corona when tens of thousands die from the flu every year? "What do they know that I don't know?"
A large part of the population are immune to the ordinary flu. Other than the few who have recovered from Corona, no one is immune of that epidemic. If Corona spreads completely out of control it can get much worse than the flu. That's what he doesn't know. I enjoy Being James Bond, but I think it should be said.
Plus, there‘s an existing vaccine for the flu...
It's also more contagious. One person with flu will infect 1.4 people on average. Those with COVID-19 will infect between 2 and 3. The Covid-19 virus also has ten times the mortality rate of the common flu.

Everyone is responsible for getting correct information about the Corona epidemic and James Bond podcasters are "only" making fan podcasts, but I think there's been some misinformation about the virus on Being James Bond. As far as I can recall he said there was a vaccine back in his reaction video to the delay, while there isn't. If he's going to talk about Corona on his podcast It could be helpful if he gave out correct information. During his Therapy Session someone on the live feed posted a conspiracy theory claiming the medical Companies are paying the media to talk aboout Corona. That's not Joe Darlington's fault, but it shows some of his audience has a need for facts on the issue.

I‘ll post it here again: I‘m not taking any side but it‘s wrong to blame Joe from BJB now. He wasn‘t informed well enough and made that clear.

But it’s also every person‘s own responsibility to know where to get valid facts from; and a James Bond-reviewer might not be the best source for public health concerns....

True, but I think it's best if everyone, including movie fan podcasters, fact-check what they say about Corona or don't say anything about the medical side of it. This is not meant as an attack on Being James Bond. I've seen many of his podcasts and I enjoy them.

That's part of it. Another big part of the problem is that the Trump administration has been pushing the whole virus thing as 'a hoax' for the past month. I'm dead serious. Add in Fox News spreading misinformation about the situation and nobody could agree on a response. As such, we're a month behind where we should be in terms of preparation. It doesn't help that the federal department that would have been able to handle this situation was gutted by the Trump administration...

It's amazing watching Trump and the Fox News team go from 'it's all a hoax being spread by libtards' to 'this is real, this is our response, and Trump is doing an amazing job and should be made God Emperor'.

In the meantime, most of the real work at containment is being done at the state level. Democrat or Republican, a lot of state governors and legislatures have stepped up and made things happen in an effort to flatten the curve. We'll see how it all shakes out.

The Trump Administration has never once called this Pandemic a "hoax". He called "the Russia Probe" a hoax. And it turned out he was right. In fact, President Trump has taken unprecedented measures to contain it. Instantly shutting down travel to China and then Europe. The fact that you say that you watch CNN, means you lose credibility. Time after time, they report stories that are PROVEN to be false. Rewind a few months ago, No one had even heard of this disease and how quickly it was spreading. The main problem is that China is a communist country and they heavily filter and limit media and social media, and they kept the severity of this disease hidden from the rest of the world. I don't see you blaming China?
What about Italy? It's 10X worse off than the US right now, I don't see you blaming President Sergio Mattarella for their current situation.

This is a Pandemic. A horrible virus. Period. You're obviously a Trump-hater and an opportunist. I find it offensive that you would use this to spread your political bias, propaganda. You should be ashamed.

This disease is affecting the entire world. President Trump didn't cook this Virus up in a lab. He's not the source of all evil. It's time for people to put their hate and personal vendettas aside, and it's time for bipartisanship and real solutions.

And I am regularly following CNN and while they are not perfect, I don‘t see big false reports from their side.

I love following politics, but I often wonder how pretty much everything is political in the US. I watched a hearing in one of the Chambers of Congress on the Corona crisis. Many of the questions and comments from the politicians were partisan, even the chairwoman leading the hearing didn't try to sound bi-partisan. The experts being questioned were excellent, though.

Saw this one last week and thought of how much it really just symbolizes the dominance this virus has over the world right now—we can't even run a conference about response measures without Corona stepping in.

    https://time.com/5800932/coronavirus-conference-canceled/

It doesn't matter where you are or who you are, this virus is going to affect you. Maybe not infect you, but certainly change your way of life in an unprecedented way. I believe we're past the point of containing this, it's now just about slowing the inevitable spread. Now is not the time to delay ANY measures that could help slow its spread.
