Loved that, thanks everybody for a great night's viewing. {[]

Can I suggest we watch a Roger Moore film next?

There it goes... arguably the best Bond film!

It's a tossup between this one and OHMSS, with me giving the edge to OHMSS for the overall direction and Bond's story arc.

Yes... though perhaps this one's more quintessentially 'Bond' precisely because Bond has no arc other than fulfilling the mission... and because Peter Hunt's sensibility (in the editing) is matched, here, by Terence Young's callous humour and appetite.

And not many cruiseships and chinese tourists :D

I'm laughing at the 'Chinese Tourists' in your post. When I was there last July, it felt like half of China/SE Asia was there, especially in the high end (Prada/Gucci) type stores.

Venice was quite lovely, though. The wife and I had an amazing time there, and it's fun to see this film and MR use Venice so well.

I want to visit Venice... whenever travel becomes safe and possible again!

I feel I'm in an increasingly unique position here, since I read the book before seeing the film (and OHMSS too). Those two are the closest to the books, and it's hard to make choice between them from that perspective. FRWL has Connery and Barry, which are both enormous plus points. OHMSS has the better score, but Lazenby.

    Glad I don't make lists!

I feel that Barry was 'onto' Fleming in his score for FRWL and that, from GF onwards, he was more 'onto' what the films had become as a phenomenon in their own right. (Either way, he was a genius.)

It's a very long time that I have seen FRWL.

I like the entire spy plot, down to the details, but the conversation after Grant overpowered Bond is weak imo.
There is something missing imo and I find it not convincing.

The fight that follows later is brutal and the rest of the movie was very enjoyable.
But OHMSS is a different beast imo and ranks far above.

So, how is your take about the similarities in the father figures Kerim and Draco, Barbel?

I'm personally game for anything, but I think we should do another Connery. In the first cycle, we did 2 Connery films, OHMSS, 2 Moores, 1 Dalton, 2 Brosnan, and 2 Craig. We could pretty much do the same again (save for OHMSS), finishing off with the final 2 (or 3) Connery films and the final 3 Moore films.

eta: to finish off this fun exercise, I'd like to respectfully suggest that we do TB followed by NSNA.

I don't have a problem with TB (far from it) though there are films I'd rather watch than NSNA

I think I would like to start a whole new thread to go into that- maybe tomorrow?

Thanks. Now we have seen possibly the best Connery Bond. I suggest we watch one of the ….. least good next: DAF.

I think even Sean himself thought that this was his best Bond film.

Of note, there was a really decent Bond video game made of FRWL with Sean doing the voice acting as Bond. If you never played it, it's worth checking out. It'd be dirt cheap by now.

It was probably the FRWL title that persuaded Connery to come out of retirement to do that voice work...

Me personally, I'd like to continue with one more Connery before watching 2 moore :D

In my opinion, we should save TB (Connery's most iconic) and DAF (his worst) for the next time and go to YOLT on Friday.

After that, my suggestion is LALD and FYEO before we move to CR and QoS.

    Can't argue with that.

I don't see TB as a palette cleanser, but I won't protest a lot. Still, I'd rather we finish on a better Bond film. CR perhaps?
  • BarbelBarbel ScotlandPosts: 36,220Chief of Staff
I quite fancy YOLT on Friday, then a Moore

Me, too... though in my case, sadly, it's because my first viewing of both films, and of YOLT, was on their original UK TV broadcast in the 70s when I was a boy, rather than in the cinema; and I'd read the Jonathan Cape editions of all three novels before seeing those films at all. (Fortunately, I'd seen DAF in the cinema on its first release, and soon after I'd seen DN/GF and DN/TB double bills in the cinema, before reading those books.)

Whoops... Had all intentions to "attend" this rewatch, but completely forgot to set my 5am alarm last night—slept right through it! I'll make sure to remember for the next one.

Oh and Barbel, I am very mad at you regarding the answer to that question you posed at the start of the thread...I put so much thought into it! :))

    Sorry you missed it, JTM.

It's a Bank Holiday in the UK on Friday, so on this occasion I don't have to work and in my case I could make any time of the day for a viewing. Just mentioning, in case this helps when weighing up what time for this Friday works best overall.

Music- “Death Of Dr No” Yes, really. Hunt put a brief excerpt from the previous film’s music in here (the shooting overran, Barry was already working on his next movie)

Oddly enough, I've always associated that cue with FRWL more than with DN, because in my teens FRWL was one of my most often rewatched films. I didn't own a copy of DN at that time and was unaware that it was a reused cue from Norman's score.
