Re: Last Bond movie you watched.

TMWTGG: This used to be on my all time low list but in recent years it has grown on me and has risen from D to C on my A-D ranking list. I love the locations and Christopher Lee is right up there in the best villain category. The return of JW Pepper is a comedic plus, what a great actor Clifton James was, and he was in one of my all time favourite movies, Cool Hand Luke.

Unfortunately there are still a lot of minuses to the film: Nick Nick, the schoolgirls taking out the martial arts “experts”, the destruction of Scaramanga’s base looks tired and Roger’s fight scenes look like an episode of The Saint, (I love The Saint TV series, but a movie shouldn’t look like it). Worst of all is John Barry’s lamentable score, definitely the lowest point in his Bond career. Britt looks good but her character is stupid.

Son of CHB loves this movie AND the theme song! As he is 9, I can see the appeal, though.

Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand.

Re: Last Bond movie you watched.

It was Skyfall when I was alone in my dorm-apartment-thing after I was allowed to return to collect some of my things from there.
My opinion of Skyfall has shifted beyond what I considered possible. Could be my hidden favourite now.
Don't think I've realised that it will be looked at as the Goldfinger of this era.
I wasn't around here when it was new but I never realised just how much of a classic it has become.

That said, I really need to refresh my Bond knowledge. With my new ambitions to try and write animated stuff, I actually think I might find the spark I lost.

It seems I'm gonna have to rediscover what Bond is to me.

a reasonable rate of return

Yeah, that was an interesting double bill, as Jaws followed afterwards!

Then DAD on ITV. I suppose coming after the preposterous Fantastic Beasts film it didn't seem so bad, esp after half a bottle of rose. But I wasn't drunk enough for the kite surfing scene to not be appalling.
Fair play to Madonna, her theme doesn't seem bad either and at least it incorporates the plot into the lyrics.
And Brosnan looks better in his final film than Connery, Moore and Lazenby did in theirs. Craig too maybe, I dunno.

The only good thing to have come out of Corona is the fact I have managed to catch up on some Bond watching over the past few months. ITV are definitely getting their money's worth out of the old Bonds.

I've always liked Madonna's  'Die Another Day'. Always thought it got a bad rap.

I couldn't subject myself to QoS the other day but I did enjoy CR and even enjoyed it again when they showed it on 'Gogglebox'.

Is Mads Mikkelson the best looking villain of the series? Yes, I think so.

Hi Lady Rose, are you the only woman left on this board?
I suppose this is due to the indisputable ugliness of the current Bond!  ajb007/biggrin
I recall when we had the likes of Lexi and MBE.

QoS really is unappealing, that said last time I looked the cut the nasty kill in the Haiti hotel room, it's just Bond wacks him and next shot he's dead on the floor, very neatly edited. Improves the scene no end.
What did they say on Gogglebox? I didn't continue to watch that.

Having said that Lexi would have had something to say to you for saying Daniel is ugly!  ajb007/lol

Gogglebox just showed the clip of Bond being poisoned at the casino table then rushing for the defibrillator. Nothing major but lots of 'he's going to die' Seriously? have you never seen a Bond film?  ajb007/lol

You're not alone, Lady Rose! And I too have something to say to NP for saying Daniel is ugly but I'm far too ladylike to say it on here!

Yay! We need girls on board to keep the chaps in line. Don't hold back with NP, he can take it.  ajb007/biggrin

Actually, I was very uncomplimentary about Daniel when he become Bond but after my first viewing of Casino Royal I changed my mind completely. I now think he's great in the role and dare I say it, quite sexy.  ajb007/embarrassed

I wasn't happy when Daniel became Bond either. Nothing against him, I didn't know who he was but I wanted Pierce to remain as Bond. But like you, I now think he's great as Bond and yes he is sexy! I wish Spectre had had a better storyline though.

Skyfall

It was on TV again. I do love this film but if I see the opening sequence one more time I think my brain will fry. It's on TV so much and I nearly always end up watching at least the first 20 mins or so. I watched the whole film last night. I do think Ralph Fiennes is an excellent addition to the Bond world.

I watched it all last night too...although that wasn’t the plan  ajb007/lol

I do like Fiennes as an actor...you do get a real sense of gravitas from him, a great addition after losing Dame Judi.
I do really like Whishaw - I think he’s excellent as the modern day Q

I watched the first bit of Skyfall then turned over to watch the superb film I Am Not Your Negro, followed by the docs on Black Hollywood.
Not suggesting that Lady Rose or Sir Miles should have done that over watching a crap Bond film for the umpteenth time - I'm not judgey  ajb007/biggrin

Watched a bit of Skyfall last night. I still think it’s a great film right up until Silva appears. Also watched most of You Only Live Twice today. Deffo not Connery’s best.

Yes. Considerably!

You are soooo judgey!!  ajb007/shifty

The truth is, I actually wanted to watch something on Netflix but for some reason it was playing up. I had Skyfall on in the background and was periodically trying Netflix to see if it was up. Took the entire length of Skyfall for it to be sorted. Still, not a hardship to watch Bond.

And Sir Miles I agree about Whishaw. He works extremely well as Q.

Re: Last Bond movie you watched.

TSWLM: Along with LALD and FYEO these are Roger’s best Bond efforts. This is a rehash of YOLT which was also directed by Lewis Gilbert. Some of the matte work is dodgy, (a continuing fault in Bond movies up to then), but Roger gets to act in a few scenes and his fight scenes are the best here during his 7 picture reign. The spectacle is grand and this is a very enjoyable opus. I love the music and the action scenes are excellent. If only Jaws hadn’t turned into a comedy act halfway through he could have been in the Oddjob class.

Son of CHB likes this, he enjoys the Moore films.

Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand.

Moonraker

Another film where Jaws is a comedy act. Not one of my favourite Bond films although the scenes at the Drax mansion were good and I enjoyed seeing the Concorde. I always wanted to fly on it.

Your son has good taste, CHB, TSWLM is a good film  ajb007/smile

Re: Last Bond movie you watched.

MR: Too much slapstick makes this a weak effort, along with many plot holes which even my 9 year old son pointed out to me. A moderate score from John Barry, it’s a pity he couldn’t ever regain the energy of his scores after DAF. Drax is a decent villain, though.

One thing I noticed was that British Airways had a huge advert in the movie but the producers used an Air France Concorde, very odd.

I think MR is one of Barry's best scores. The film itself has some decidedly dodgy moments but it remains a guilty pleasure. Some classic moments and lovely locations. Agree Drax is a great villain. Was good to have Jaws back and has some of the most beautiful women to appear in any Bond film! ajb007/embarrassed
